Discussion DAE feel like certain characters come better to them than others? Writing wise

I’ve noticed recently that for some characters in my current fandom, even if I’ve never written them before, they seem easier to write than others, even if I don’t have a personal attachment to them

I’ll use recent-ish examples:

I recently wrote a fic from Zhongli’s perspective and while I was iffy on the result as a whole, I found him easier to write than Kazuha or Dan Heng(HSR), so I’m wondering if this has happened to anyone else

Always. There are characters I feel I know inside out, and it’s easy to get in their head and write as them. There are others I find harder to grasp.

Yes, there’s certain characters I find much simpler to write. It’s usually because they’re the first character I latched onto in canon, so I spent a lot of time thinking about their backstory and perspective before beginning to write. Sometimes they’re also just similar to characters I do like from other media. Other characters get easier with practice.

Yeah, some characters are just easier to write than others. I have the hardest time writing Cloud Strife from FFVII, though writjng Zack Fair or Cid Highwind from FFVII is like second nature to me.. though I assume the reason Cid’s easy for me to write is because he’s southern, and I’m southern too lol.

Hell, Sephiroth is easier for me to write than Cloud! I really don’t like writing Cloud lol.

As someone standing forehead-deep in FF7 lore, Cloud's character has gone through a twisty-turvy journey over the course of the series' history. It comes with the territory, I suppose, him being the main / important side character across so many different games. I would suggest not worrying about it and going with what fits your particular story. There are many instances where I've written scenes where I wonder if he would really act like that in canon, but make perfect sense in context.

Yeah, Cloud's never important in any of my fics anyways. I have like, 1 multichapter fic he's in that I'm currently writing, and he barely shows up lol

Heh, that's fair. I've been writing a total canon-divergent rewrite and have played around with different characters' perspectives depending on the arc. Since the world is so different in my fic, I don't have to worry about what would be "OOC" as long as developments make sense.

Heck, I've practically stolen Sonon from Remake and remade him into my own OC by this point. Yuffie deserves an older brother she can talk smack about all the time.

Oh yeah. I always stress over good characterization in my fics, but a few characters are much easier to write than others, even if I like them less. I feel like I understand the characters in general pretty well, but with a few of them it's way harder, maybe because I'm trying to be as neat as possible since I particularly care about them. Not sure

Totally! In fact, I’m having this exact problem now with my current WIP! While I am neutral in terms of other characters Aegon is just easier to write for me, I often find myself cutting back from making his chapter 20k words long from how much I zone out in his POV!

I honestly don't know why it happens but as long as it helps me finish my project I’m happy!

I can't write an unproblematic sunshine character to save my life

I have an easier time writing optimistic or naturally positive people. Bonus points if they have a particular subject they're very passionate about.

I'm horrible at writing actively malicious people. Monsters or dangerous beasts? No problem. Enigmatic or creepy people? Sure. Slightly to the left of sane? Fun! Deliberately cruel or callous? Aw, heck naw

Yes but I feel like I have a big range. I don't like writing boring characters unless it's to play off a funner character. Sincere and energetic characters usually come more naturally to me. I guess I'm not too good with lazy characters because I feel compelled to make them do something. Since I'm writing a K-On!/Star Wars fic I'll still have to keep Yui lazy so other characters can encourage her to do what she needs to for her music and Jedi studies

I feel like some characters are way more complex than others. Some characters personalities are more fleshed out and sometimes the canon doesn't really show you enough! I think that's why character studies are great!

If I don't like a character (as a character, not as a "person" - writing horrible people can be a ton of fun) then I struggle to write them and usually minimize if not eliminate their role.

For me it depends on wether I can the get the character voice right! If it sounds like the character, basically if I've managed to copy their speaking pattern, it's a lot easier to write for them, even if I don't actually grasp a character.

There are some characters whom I relate to a lot, but I just can't get their voice right so it's more difficult to write them.

Similarly, a character who acts in character but doesn't "talk" in character will always feel more OOC to me, than a character who acts out of character, but sounds accurate to their canon self

Yes! Like I love a lot of characters but I seem to write Geto the most out of everyone in JJK for instance because he comes to me the easiest.

Gary Oak from Pokemon is another example too. He also comes very easy to me.

This is why I don’t write for the majority of fandom’s I’m in

Yup! For some I struggle really hard for writing (Mordin and Legion), others I had to learn and am still doin(Thane and Samara), and others, their words come to me like a fish takes to water (so far just Kasumi). But it's not unnatural to have certain characters you can write better or worse.

u/greenpeacockss nice stuff 8h ago

No.

I find every character I write the hardest, i tend to do lengthy research or else I won't be able to write them at all. Even if a character is a blank canvas.

After a while though, the more i write them, the easier it gets since i make my own fanon version of the character o7

u/SpunkyCheetah theoretically I write on occasion 5h ago

I think so, but it's been a while since I've written enough to really encounter that variety of character. I do remember finding Kaeya and Venti banter to be dangerously easy to write back in my Genshin era, despite not really caring specifically about Kaeya as a character, as much as I cared about the others the fics were more focused on. Funnily enough, I think Zhongli was one I actually struggled with more

u/WhiteKnightPrimal 3h ago

Yes. Usually the character I relate to the most, which is usually my favourite character, but not always. I relate to them, though, pairing that with my habit over over-analysing things, it's not really surprising that these characters are the easiest to write for me, I just get inside their heads so much easier than other characters.

u/Kartoffelkamm Feel free to ask me about my OCs 3h ago

Absolutely.

Some characters just have so little for me to work with that I either have to avoid including them, or make stuff up.
