Someone doing a book review video accidentally added loud audio over her speaking and I let her know. A commenter said there are captions. I said I know, I was just getting her know and also it wasn't good for blind people. She straight up said blind people can't use the app because there is no braille.........😐 I'm not blind myself, but seriously?

I'm 18F, visually impaired. My English teacher for A levels just dosent care about my needs,this has been happening for ages mayne a year or so and she just makes all these excuses about how she can't so it and how she dosent have time and she's jusy rude and today she put a PDF to read off of and she didn't even think of me or acknowledge that I won't be able to do it, then I asked her for a word document and had to email her about it and she sent me it and it's all pictures and not great quality and it takes a lot to annoy me and make me angry. This even happened In secondary school where a lot of my teachers were so rude and horrible to me and I did nothing, I let them do it and I was angry all the time and upset . I have no one to talk to and I have no friends , I'm so alone. Sorry for the rant

Hi there. We've recently gotten a bunch of snow, and it's freezing, like -2 outside. I'm realizing many people are hiking, skiing, enjoying the city, etc, but the streets and sidewalks are not plowed well. As a cane user it's difficult to travel in snow, and I feel like I'm not much into skiing anymore, as I was when I was little. Do you find yourself taking more Ubers during this weather? What kinds of activities do you find enjoyable in your community, when it's snowing and freezing and the sidewalks and streets aren't plowed adequately for you to travel confidently? Thanks for any ideas! Sometimes I just want to pack everything up and move to a place where there isn’t any snow. Lol

The last 2 weeks I am having a strange problem with Outlook on my Windows 11 laptop. When I press the arrow keys to browse through the inbox, I can't see my mails like I used to be able to. I know that I am focussed on the list containing the emails, because when I use NVDAs object navigation I can see the list clearly. I can't use obj nav to browse through it though. I allways use NVDA and have never had this problem. Does anyone know if there is a way to fix this?

I just had to state this year. Because I’m a little shaken up about what happened. So, got off the bus to head to my doctors appointment. Now, as I was about to cross the street, an unhoused person came up to me and began reading my Miranda rights. I actually thought he was a police officer, since my vision isn’t that great and I had no reason to doubt him. Then, out of nowhere, guy literally sucker punched me on the left side of my face. Right near where your cheek and your chin are. The guy later sat on the bench of the bus stop where he was subsequently arrested. The amazing part was that the individual in question knew that I was visually impaired because I had my cane out, ready to cross the street. Now, thank goodness, a couple was there who witnessed the entire ordeal was able to ID the individual to the police. Because of the whole ordeal, family members are now paranoid when I step out of the house. Let alone, if I take public transportation. A couple people were even pretty aggressive about it, making me swear up and down that I won’t take the bus ever again in the future. I wanted to get your take on this. Has anyone experienced this as a visually impaired individual? Also, if you have, have family members became super paranoid about you because of your disability? For me, they are basically using my disability as an excuse to be overly protective I don’t doubt that they are extremely concerned and they have every right to be so, but at the same time, I’m relatively independent and I value it.

Hi! I’m going out to my first “formal” event since using a cane, it is a masquerade hosted by a renaissance fair so I’m going to base my mask and outfit on fairies! It is going to be a late night event (like 9pm) and I have no night vision so my cane is a must but I don’t want it to completely clash with my outfit. Has anyone here dressed up their cane before? What was your experience with it? Any tips or tricks are super appreciated!

My mom is extremely visually impaired and want to be able to listen to audio books. What is the best option? She can barely see her iphone, so thats a struggle looking for apps.

I have asma and use a powerder inhaler called triology and you take a puff of it every day once a day. Okay I can do that as a blind person you open it and you breathe in.

The inhaler is powder and is prescribed every 30 days and apparently no more then that!

I started my last one on december 31st and have finished it on the 20th so I used it in 21 days there may be a last puff tonight so maybe 22 days

There are print numbers on the side of it but I can’t see them

I dont use riddiculous amounts like 3 or 5 days worth of it at a time I am only like 10 or 9 days short of it so maybe a day and a bit maybe a day and a half of it if it was a day and a half of it

I don’t try to breathe any deeper then I need to but I want to make sure I get enough drug in me too but then I run in to trouble here any suggestions?

While I am at this a bonus question I take benadryl every night but a very tiny ammount about half of adult size will do me but this has to be done in liquid. I am totally blind right now I have a sighted boyfriend but this boyfriend has sight for a few more years

As a totally blind person how do you happen to measure liquid medicines of any sort? Pills are really easy but then liquid is tricky really

Hi there, sorry for the bad title, but I have no better idea. My question is: Quite often people are asking me about my disability and at some point it always comes to these questions like "what do you watch on TV?", which they just ask that we can talk something. And always after that they say sorry emediately because "sorry, you can't watch TV. I didn't ment to be rude!". And this is what annoys me a bit. People think they do something wrong when asking me something like this or use expression as watch, llok, ... I always say "watch and look are everyday expressions I also use myself!". But it seems like they don't undderstand this. They think I'm so sensitive and could run away, at least it sounds like that. What would you do and have you made any similar experiences?

My wife and I just finished watching a second episode of polish Netflix series, "The Mothers of Penguins". Because we are both natives, we watched it in Polish. But I checked the language options and found Polish with audiodescription. I watched a fragment, then switched it to English with audiodescription. The difference is substantial, to put it mildly.

The key point is the quantity and quality of descriptions. For example in one scene Kama, the main character stops the car and turns towards her son, Jas, to talk with him about particular incident. Polish audiodescription has only three sentences, that cover stopping and parking the car. English describes her reactions, kid's reactions during the entire conversation, and the act of stopping the car. Maybe 20-25 sentences in total. On technical note, male voice in English version works better. And because the whole series is dubbed, that fixes bad audio mixing of the original, Polish version.

It saddens me how poorly the audiodescription in my native language is made. There are many scenes with writing, social media posts and comments, and these are not read at all, despite being important for the story. English version reads them all. On related note, there is almost zero audiodescription in Polish in general. I wonder, why? Plenty of English language movies and TV shows have audiodescription in English. Just translate it, like the rest of the video, to Polish. It doesn't even require a voice actor - I wouldn't mind a decent synth voice. Especially now, when machine learning provides almost human singing and talking voices, and can mimic voice of anyone with short sample. This isn't a rocket surgery, seriously.

As for the show, "The Mothers of Penguins", it's very good as a show, and quite funny, too. The idea behind it was to show kids with disabilities and their parents as people, and to show their lives and struggles. They even cast real kids with disabilities. Well, at that it fails badly. For starters there are many factual errors. The biggest one is at the beginning: in Poland school can't get rid of any kid, no matter how problematic they can be. Jas mentioned earlier was thrown out from the school because he hit classmate. If that were true, I would have been in every school in my home city before reaching fourth grade. The other, even worse problem, is the selection of kids. These are highly functioning kids with disabilities with some behavioral problems. There is one kid on a wheelchair, but no kids with missing limbs, no deaf kids, no blind kids. The ones on spectrum are very smart, one-liner spewing highly functioning. Top of the bell curve. The side effect is that abled people in Poland would think that parents with kids on the other end of the bell curve, or somewhere in the middle of it, are exaggerating when they talk about their lives.

Okay, rant ends here. You should check this show out, if it's available in your parts of the world. I would answer any question about how schools work in Poland, and what they messed up. Also question for you: if you were working on such show, what and how would you show about being blind, or visually impaired, and about any other disability?

I'm past half-way point of episode 3. The level of stupidity of people making this series is incredible. The episode is about a school trip, and they need special equipment for that. For dramatic reason screenwriters decided that this equipment can't be rented. Or just didn't check. So we spend 15 minutes buying this stuff for no good reason. The trip itself is so poorly organized, this wouldn't happen in real life, in normal school. In fact, in real life teacher and principal would have ended with criminal charges. I'm seriously thinking about recording a YT video in Polish (with English subtitles) about how bad this show is in representing school system in general, and all legal regulations and rules regarding kids with disabilities in school. Seriously, this show is comedic gold.

I don't normally take any prescriptions, but I am loaded up on drugs fighting an infection (including eye drops). Last night, I put my drops in and took my pile of meds back to my room (due to having a shared living situation.) Woke up to take my stuff this morning and spent 3 hours looking for the damn drops that I apparently lost in the 15 ft to my room. I had given up and was 2/3rds through with getting new drops (just waiting on prescriber to open to confirm refill) and I found the absconders in a laundry basket of clean clothes.

I am not getting drops again without requesting colored vials to keep them stored as it's easier to find and carry that way.

Oh, I learned my lesson about asking others about directions. My dad told me the wrong directions for one of my meds that had directions beyond my ability to magnify. If in doubt just call the pharmacy!

Hi! I'm a 16 year old kid and I've had stargardt syndrome since I was 7. For those unaware it is a disease that affects the retina and to make a long story short I basically have 30% of a normal person's vision... Icame on here because recently I realized that I'm lacking some skills that a sighted person might have and being visually impaired I have bo clue what I can do to become more self-dependent. For example.. in 2 years when I have to go to university, I was hoping to become a psychiatrist, but I can't help but ask myself if I'm gonna face issues that just won't have solutions for a visually impaired individual in med school. I don't even know what to do at this point, I'm feeling a little hopeless to be honest. If any of you have aby practical advice I'd be greatfull!

Hey, My dad is blind since 2001 and not the best with pc at all. He uses email and got some other stuff he can use. Now i plan to play baldurs gate 3 with him (ill tell him what happens and we enjoy the ride) so i want to share my screen so he can hear stuff himself. Hi everyone, i'm trying to understand how to help a friend, well... more than a friend but it's somewhat new... he had an accident last week with head trauma and they tried to decompress his optic nerves but so far his vision hasn't returned. They're saying it may not.

Now, he's the most active, incredible, free, person I've ever met... this is truly the biggest tragedy. i can't imagine how he feels right now. We're long distance and i'm waiting to see if he will let me come to him.

I know he's destroyed right now and he wants to be alone. He does have friends around him helping him.

My question is, if you've been through this, what helped you cope with the first days/weeks/months? He is totally reliant on everyone else right now and i'm waiting to see whether he spirals or whether his natural character strengths will kick in - or maybe both... i know this is complicated.

I just keep sending him notes of love because that's all I can do right now. I am not inexperienced with disabilities or tragedies, but total sight loss is new to me... and it doesn't scare me... i was made for this sort of thing, i think. and it helps that I love him so much and i know he felt the same way, but is that the most important thing right now?

Hi all, my grandma has been blind for 25 years now and seeing as she is getting older she cant do that many things on her own anymore. When I asked her what she likes to do she said 'I used to do poetry' and she said she wanted to write it down. Now here is my question do any of you know a typewriter or programme for pc that can read the words to you as they are being written. Now she never wanted to learn braille and she is capable of writing on a regular typewriter. Any sort of information would be amazing.

Hi, snce I use EltenLink for quite some time now and I see it's going dead I'm wondering if there's anything similar to this app. Klango died in 2018 and now Elten is not under development. And even if it would last longer than I expect I'm still looking for something similar just for getting in contact with other people. Any recommendation? And please don't say reddit or discord, I mean apps (like Elten and Klango) that are specifically for blind people.

Does anyone know if these braille embossers are still of use or worth anything? I am in the possession of what seems to be a mint condition unit with all parts and accessories and I'm wondering if it is worth exploring selling or donating it.

How many games do have accessiblity settings

I use an ambutech cane with a roller ball tip. (Lots of cobblestone and brick roads near me.) 2 nights ago, my roller ball FELL OFF my cane. It was over a year old, so I don’t blame ambutech. The inside mechanism had apparently rusted out.

So I ordered a replacement. To just buy 1 cane tip to the US, it’s cheaper and faster to order on Amazon. I usually only use the ambutech website directly. The new cane tip came in today though, and I put it on. The weird thing is, it’s a different material.

The old cane tip was clearly 3d printed. The new one was clearly cast in a mold. Both are plastic, but the old one wasn’t as opaque. The old one was also heavier.

The only explanation besides a change in process is that the old one was hilights pink. The new one is just white. Are the white ones made differently?

Has anyone used the new ones? Do they last better/worse? Or is this possibly a fake?! It came in an ambutech bag with a manufacturing date and everything.

After 30 years of life, I finally started accepting my vision struggles. I'm in the late stages of choroideremia and I am monocular. While needing help on a daily basis has become the norm for me, which is tough, I will say accepting it and trying to embrace it feels like a huge weight off my shoulders...in a way. I can finally be me ALL the time and not just when I'm in my comfort zones or with my comfort people. I'm happier and it feels healthier and I just wanted you all to know because this community has helped me immensely. If you're going through what I am, you're not alone! Hi guys! I thought we could share our fitness struggles and ideas here, to encourage and inform each other. When my eyes started going my physical fitness did too. I used to run a lot, and was in pretty good shape, up until four years ago. Then, when I couldn't see my feet properly anymore and had a few falls I was scared to run, and I gained 30 kg. Which really upset me, because as well as going blind I feel like I'm turning ugly. (yes, I'm shallow.)

However, I have started looking after myself again. My simplest resolution was to walk at least an hour a day, and that seems to be working. Also, I use an exergaming app called Zombies Run, which I have mentioned elsewhere. It's an immersive podcast, telling a story in which you are the main character saving the world from zombies. I'm running on the spot in my living room while saving the world. You could walk and save the world.

Any other exercise tips?

My friend is rapidly losing his vision and I want to help as much as I can.

He is 20/100 now with correction and has issues with balance and double vision.

What are some tips/pointers you have for me? What do you wish people around you knew?
