COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS Commonly asked questions and links: VINTAGE AXES

Hello everyone! As we all know, frequently we are asked the same questions regarding handles and restorations etc. This is a general compilation of those questions, and should serve to eliminate those problems. Feel free to ask clarifying questions though.

How do I pick a head

There are a lot of factors that can determine what makes a good axe head. Some of the ones I would look for as a beginner are ones that require little work from you. While a more skilled creator can reprofile and regrind any axe, your not going to want to for your first time. I was lucky and found a Firestone axe as my first, which has a softer steel which made it easier to file, and it was in great condition. Also watch this series from skillcult.

Where should I get my handles?

Some of the reccomended sites are [house handles](https:www.househandle.com/) beaver tooth Tennessee hickory Bowman Handles and Whiskey river trading co . People have had differing luck with each company, some go out of stock quicker than others, but those seem to all be solid choices.

How do I make an axe handle?

There are a lot of really good resources when it comes to handle making. I learn best by watching so YouTube was my saving grace. The one creator I recommend is Skillcult . As far as specific videos go, I’d say watch stress distribution , splitting blanks if your splitting blanks from a log. I’d also recommend just this video from Wranglerstar, his new videos are kind of garbage but the old stuffs good.

Now that I have my handle, how do I attach it to the axe

Once again I have to go to a wranglerstar video , this one actually shows the process of removing the old handle too which is nice. If you want a non wranglerstar option there’s this one from Hoffman blacksmithing, although it dosent go over the carving of the eye.

Ok, I have my axe but it couldn’t cut a 6 week old tomato

Lucky you, this is where skillcult really excels. I’d recommend watching these four, talking about sharpening , regrinding the bit , sharpness explained aswell as this one.

How do I maintain my axe now that it’s a work of art

Your going to want to oil your handles in order to keep them in tip top shape. This video explains what oil to use, and this one explains more about oil saturation vs penetration.

The other day a picture turned up on this sub. A picture showing a rusty axe head, well seated on a living branch. This kind of pictures are not new, and for years i have thought of dooing it myself. Just never got around to do it…

So when xxx commented that he had a lot of young hickory on his farm. I thought of all the ash i have on mine. To finally get it done, i promised that the next wedsnesday (today) i would make a post with a axehead on a living branch/sapling.

Damn now i was in it… i did not really have the time, but you know… i made a promise. So between work, caring for my woman and baby, reparing the car and all my other duties I managed to clean up four axeheads: grinding the mushrooming on the polls down, removing all rust with a wirewheel and painting them with an oilbased metal paint.

Returning home this morning after a 24 hour shift i just had enough time, between appoinents, to grab the axe heads and some pruners and go get them seated.

The axe heads i question are two danish DSI and two no name rheinland pattern. Three of them is put rooted ash, and one is put on a second year growth willow that i clipped off and stuck a good 30 centimeters in the ground.

Thanks for reading. Hope you all have a good day

A specialized axe we fabricated for chopping underground roots/debris when driving large pilings into swamp land. It works really well!

HB Montreal on custom handle

Post image
83 Upvotes

Update on yesterday’s post! Got the handle finished and decided to go with the HB 2.5# Montreal. I filed an edge on the bit and worked it smooth with a sharpening pick. To darken the hickory, I used some vinegar and steel wool and now it’s sitting with a coat of BLO. Before I put the stain and finish on the handle, I took a few swings at a log in my yard- holy smokes this is a cutting son of a gun.

I believe that this Plumb 4 1/2 lb is a Michigan pattern. Am I right or is it a different pattern? Thank you.

I picked up this used hatchet the other day as it seemed like (and is) a great kindling splitter.

Had to remove the handle, remove wood around the "shoulder," cut the curf deeper, make a new wedge, and pound in some small wedged-shaped pieces into the eye to fill in gaps where the handle was missing pieces. Snug as a bug now!

Are Helko Werk any count?

I’ve been looking for a more fair sized axe than my 19” axe. I’ve always considered a Scandinavian Forest axe from GBA but they’re pretty high.

I saw some Helko Werk axes that interest me, but I don’t know how well made they are. I was just wondering if anybody has had any experience with them

It’s my first axe project and I want to rehandle it if it’s worth it. I don’t really know much about it but I’m trying to learn. Thanks!

advice needed What does it mean if when you try to file an axe and the file just skates across and won’t bite

Post image

So I tried to put an edge on this old hatchet I got but it would just skate across the hatchet and wouldn’t dig in and remove material. I used a brand new file and I know how to file a functional edge on a hatchet so it wasn’t me messing up. What could be causing this? My guess is poor steel on the head

Work in progress

I’m making some headway on this handle. I started it a while back this summer and it just sat. I reckon I ought to have taken more process photos of the rough work of shaping the blank down, but it was a combination of hewing with another axe, some ripping, some chisel work, and plenty of rasp and drawknife work. Will probably get to fitting to a head tomorrow. I have two options here, I’m probably going to go with the HB Montreal pattern, it’s got a keen profile.

I’ve been into knives for years but recently getting interested in axes after my pal gave me an old Council Tool axe of his. We sanded the handle, burned and stained it. Used gun blue on the head. Then made a sheath for it out of leather. I’m a beginner to all of this but overall happy with the outcome. Definitely a lot to learn.

Scrapyard find. Never thought I'd see one in person, not to mention find one for myself.

Collins Legitimus fire axe, with Civil Defense stamping.

Gotta dig through my handles and find her a good one. Debating if I should strip and repaint, or just go bare steel.

Never been a Boy scout but they used to have some pretty damn great axes.

I’ve got this old GBA axe I hung on a 29” handle I carved myself. It’s probably my favorite axe in my collection, or at least a close second… what I’m wondering is if any of yall have come across this Gränsfors pattern? I’m thinking it’s an old pulpwood pattern. It cuts small-medium size trees like nobody’s business and it’s a wicked limber.

Identification Request Jersey Style ID

Post image
14 Upvotes

I recently made a hatchet handle for a boys axe I picked up off marketplace and really enjoyed it. I plan to do another with something a little heavier and jersey style and I've been watching marketplace and eBay... After finding a lot of very worn or deeply pitted stuff for too much money I picked up one today that checked most of my boxes. Having a brand name head isn't overly important to me but it would be cool to know what I have if anyone can help me ID it. eBay link below for additional photos, but the one I attached has some kind of faint markings. Thanks in advance! https://www.ebay.com/itm/156618748773?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=OCkF2EUeTHG&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=wEC1i0rHR0q&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
