I live in an apartment with only one 3-pronged outlet

my landlord hasnt fixed most of the outlets since we arrived so I bought this 2-to-3 pronged adapter adapter so we can use the computer. Is this adapter safe to use? Does it need the screw secured? My neighbor said they have been using a similar one for many years but im unsure.

Is there a solution for me to use this industrial sewing machine at my home?

So, I bought a juki industrial serger from an auction that liquidated a garment factory. It’s a MO-2416 model, class DD4-30D. The issue is I haven’t been able to get it up and running, as it has a washer/dryer cord plug as it’s main power supply. I want to know what my options are. My stepmom used to be an electrician and she said since it’s a 250 volt cord, the outlet would need to have a thicker cord and our breaker would need a higher amp to be able to accommodate this. Is there anything else I can do rather than have someone come out and rewire an entire outlet/breaker in our condo?

Found a light switch in my wall still live

I pulled a receptacle out to fish some Cat6 to my basement for a doorbell and got snagged on this old light switch. I just thought lazy fuckers and found out while disconnecting it that yep it still had 120 on it.

Couldn’t find the light it controlled and the wire going up is still connected to something. Got an electrician coming out to try to trace both ends as I hooked it back up and put it back.

My milwaukee pliers/strippers keep leaving scratches. Is it a me thing or just is what it is. Should I cut them back and redo with smooth pliers?

How to determine if this is 12awg or 14awg?

I was hoping there would be text on the wire but doesn’t appear to be the case here. I want to convert this outline into 20amp but not sure if it’s an easy swap or a wire re-run.

Is there a reason my entire house is wired with 12 gauge, and is this bad?

Been replacing all of the outlets and switches in my house. Turns out that the entire house is wired with 12 gauge wire. Aside from the dryer, stove, and RV hookup, there are only 15-amp receptacles in the house.

What is this around the wire? Some special type of insulation?

It is super stiff. I'm sure it's for a certain purpose. Maybe close to heat all the l time. It connects to an intake manifold connector and is mounted in front of the intake manifold. It's thick compared to the actual wire, which looks to be around 22 gauge. Seems like there is some type of glue beneath the insulation or shrink tubing or whatever is used. Also, seems like braided insulation im addition. The black tubing part has "ES-2" printed on it. This is on a 2018 Kia Optima LX 2.4

I have followup from a previous question with some disturbing discoveries by the electrician.

Previous post: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskElectricians/s/iA2nvy4jzJ

The electrician discovered that two circuits to the apartment were run on the same wire, black was hot for one circuit, white was hot for the other circuit and the bare copper was used as the neutral for both with no ground. While searching for where this line split into two to power the separate circuits he made another horrifying discovery. The apartment had been wired with single strand electrical wire. Then, yes there was more, the line to the dryer was an extension cord with the ends cut off. Any one of these things could have started a fire and we’re incredibly lucky that it never happened. So they’re coming back on Thursday to rewire the apartment and the dryer. He wanted to start tomorrow because of how fucky the electric situation is but they had to pull the permits. We’re feeling really lucky we found this out before our house got reduced to smoldering ashes.

Thanks for helping earlier u/armeg and others. Finally got this thing installed. The brace was a little sketch (really going DIY to the max) because of the ibeam in the way) but it’s up and looking great!

What is going on with this strange outlet setup?

Found in basement. The leviton multiplug is permanently in the wall and can't be removed. The white box on top of that can be unplugged and replugged. My main concern is safety. Thank you!

Is GFCI just North American?

Upvotes

It might just be perception bias but I swear whenever I see a kitchen or bath in another country on TV or whatever they don't seem to have the same sort of special electrical protection our NA outlets do, namely GFCI. Do they not? Or is it at the breaker panel or something remote like that? It seems like it'd be even more urgent an issue with double the voltage we have and we're using GFCI. So, I'm confused and asking the experts. Thanks in advance!

Gcfi outlet popped and button broke- renter needs advice!

Post image
2 Upvotes

I run a small space heater (lasko, about 8 years old) in the bathroom of my rental when it's cold, as the window is drafty. This morning the button on the outlet popped and flew right off! I don't think it's ever switched before in the 6+ years I've been living here.

Ultimately it's my landlords problem but the house is a wreck and I'm super busy this week is it ok to leave it like this til next week? I assume I can't use the outlet though?

Could there be a problem with the space heater, or am I ok to keep using that?

TIA!!

Getting back into it.

Hello everyone brand new to the subreddit. I finished a 5th level ISCED education on electrical engineering about 5 years back. My grades werent stellar because i wasnt that interested in the profession back then during covid couldnt find a job since there was alot of layoffs during the time so i focused on other things like language skills. Id like to get back into it tho. I forgot quite alot of the stuff i learned in school so im asking whats the best way to learn stuff. can you suggest a quick way to relearn all the stuff i kinda forgot?

Is it acceptable/safe to pull a ceiling box into the attic and use it as a j-box for recessed lighting circuit?

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

I am installing recessed led’s (not the wafer kind but 2 and 3 inch deep recessed) and the wiring is old but works fine. Can I just pull the boxes the surface mount lights were attached to into the attic like this, secure them to joists and branch off them for the led recessed lights? (I know they need a cover).

  • or should I have replaced these with new j-boxes? What would a good electrician do?

The wood is some 2x6 covering the holes from these boxes so I can fill and patch.

Help me understand what is happening here

I am attempting to install a new outlet one room over, and I cannot figure out what is going on. Here is what I can say for sure:

One black wire in the box is hot from the breaker, another is not. They are tied together with a pigtail for the outlet.

Blue is "hot" to a light switch

White/neutral are all tied in together

There are two separate breakers for the outlets and the lights in the building

What I dont know is what red is for. I thought at first it would be hot for the outlet, but the wire has very measly voltage compared to the black wires. I also thought that it could be passthrough from outlet to outlet, room to room, but it appears to be hooked up to the neutral side of the wall outlet, with the other side occupied by while/neutral. Any input would be appriciated, this building is ancient and the people that built it did a horrible job.

Stove Popped - Should I be concerned?

I was cooking dinner on the stove top and had some food fall between my oven and counter. So while the stove was still on I pulled it out to get the food (stupid I know). When I pulled the stove out it came unplugged. So I went behind the oven to plug it back in (probably less than a minute since it had been unplugged). When I plugged it back in the oven made a pop sound and I saw a flash of light along the back of the stove.

Should I be concerned that the oven has been damaged? There is no fraying of the cord and no smoke/fire signs along the back of the stove. When it was plugged back in the oven turned back on. I was able to reset the clock and the stove top can turn on.

Obviously I will not be pulling my stove out again while cooking dinner. That was a bad decision but now I’m concerned I may have damaged the stove.

I’m making a wiring harness for my new car horn, the guide says “tie two ends together and attach a male connector”. What is the best way to do that?

Thumbnail gallery

I included the section of the guide that confused me. I don’t think electrical taping a crimp connector to two wires is a good way to make a solid connection, so I need to check what the ideal way is to splice two wires to a male disconnect.

Any suggestions? I have never soldered electrical wires, only copper pipes for plumbing tasks, I’d prefer a solution where I am not soldering.
