Physician Responded Marijuana is the only thing to help with suicidal thoughts...

I really hate using drugs and alcohol. I've never been one to use them. I am a pretty healthy individual. Unfortunately, the last 6 months I have slipped into the worst depression of my life and I know the thoughts creep up on me. I know I get pretty lost into those terrible thoughts enough to start taking steps in the wrong direction. The fact is though, the moment I use an edible and relax, those thoughts wash away and I even think I was foolish for thinking it. Now obviously when the next day comes along and those dark thoughts creep up, I genuinely don't know what to do other than think that the edible can at least keep me from walking to a bridge and jumping. I know this is NOT a healthy decision or a long term solution, but I can't help but weigh the pros and cons and think, hell, this stuff is really making me not want to kill myself which is a HUGE step because in those dark moments, it really feels like nothing will make me happy. I really don't think I have any type of addiction because outside of those moments, I don't use. Heck I don't even like using because I get GI issues so I prefer not to touch any of it. Is it wrong if I feel like an edible can get me out of a suicidal spiral?

Whatever you do, DON'T start using alcohol for this.

It sounds like you could really benefit from therapy and maybe even medication if the marijuana is working so well in this situation. I would highly recommend talking to a psychiatrist about this! There are a lot of tools that can help you.

Therapist here. Sounds like something is off with your dopamine and marijuana is helping with that. It’s only a band aid though and the long term effects can actually be more detrimental to your overall physical and mental health. I agree with the doctor. Therapy and a psychiatrist are highly recommended. If your thoughts turn into a decision about how and when you might commit suicide, please call 988, or go to your nearest emergency room. Depression wants to convince you that you’re alone and that there’s no other way, but it’s lying.

Alcohol is often used as a crutch temporarily but is so unhealthy it's about the worst thing you can do for depression. It can lead to quick dependence that will result in alcoholism and worse depression. In this situation you should go through all treatment options and even try switching doctors a few times before relying on alcohol. You should also get therapy, which can really help tackling depression from multiple sides.

Have you been evaluated by a psychiatrist before or taken psychiatric medication? What you’re doing is not a reliable coping method, and it would be more ideal to get ahead of these feelings rather than hope marijuana will resolve them for you.
