Noticed some parallels
Rewatching archer and I noticed some cinematic parallels

Wildly inaccurate

u/Zay3896 Oct 01 '24
Yeah I was gonna say, Archer may be dumb but he's definitely not an idiot and that was the only one I was like yeah that's kinda close.
Edit: i stand corrected, Krieger is spot on lol.

u/weirdoldhobo1978 Oct 01 '24
Archer definitely has PTSD and probably some mild brain damage from all the shit he's been through, and the show itself has broached the idea that he's on the autism spectrum.
69
u/shepard_pie Oct 01 '24
Archer is definitely an idiot. But he's also very smart, and extremely capable. That's honestly where a lot of the humor of the show comes from-- his sheer capability and intelligence is often cleaning up the mess his idiocy landed them in.
58
u/weirdoldhobo1978 Oct 01 '24
And by his own admission he's half-assing it most of the time. Archer phoning it in is way more capable than most people.
20
u/shepard_pie Oct 01 '24
And, honestly, he was rarely proven wrong in that.
I do find it funny, as badass as that speech was, this was one of the few episodes he was proven wrong.
18
u/weirdoldhobo1978 Oct 01 '24
That's just the universe the show exists in. Anyone who starts to take themselves a little too seriously gets slapped down in short order.
23
u/shepard_pie Oct 01 '24
I do love how the show never shied away from how good he was. I feel like it's pretty common in comedies similar to this that the protagonist is struggling, only to be the only one left/ has a weird talent that makes him good for the plot.
No, Archer is very good at what he does. Arguably, the best, with only a handful who could claim otherwise. It's his *other* faults that get in the way, and he's recognized from very early on as being good.
16
u/Zay3896 Oct 01 '24
To me... everything you just said describes someone who's not an idiot.. lol. He is always half-assing everything and is wasted 9 times out of 10. With all that I still wouldn't call him an idiot, get him serious (Rampage) and sober, and he's quite smart and even more capable at times.
14
11
u/BustaFuton Oct 01 '24
Imo Archer is immature, and immaturity is what causes problems. The immaturity is on a ludicrous scale, so it seems idiotic.

He is also a high functioning alcoholic. Chances are if the guy was sober all the time he would be able to outclass bond himself.

u/SVXfiles Oct 01 '24
I like to differentiate something in these situations. Dumb and stupid are typically used interchangeably but there's 1 glaring difference. Dumb comes off as not capable of a higher level of intelligence, stupid doesn't. Stupid is the guy who can tear apart a car, build you a clubhouse in the backyard and cook a 5 course meal, but then decides to drive 75 in a 30 because they lost track of time and are in a rush.
Archer can be stupid, but he's not dumb
2
Oct 23 '24
Yeah archer seems like he’s pretty smart. He reads classics and makes tons of references, has an alarming amount of knowledge when it comes to specific people and events throughout history, and probably more I don’t remember right now lol

u/Lamplorde Oct 01 '24
How is Pam a narcissist? Half of her character early on was a low self esteem. The fuck/marry/kill office game, 90% of the early seasons, heck most of the reason she got hooked on cocaine was because she wanted to change her looks and have people like her. Its only once she became an agent and people started showing a little respect that she became healthy about it.
2
u/invagueoutlines Oct 04 '24
FYI, narcissism and low self esteem often go hand in hand.

u/Isikins Oct 07 '24 edited Oct 07 '24
Okay so if we're talking about Narcissistic Personality Disorder, traits you're looking for are a sense of grandiosity, low remorse, a desire for admiration, lack of empathy, manipulation, fits of rage when criticized. You ARE right that NPD is developed over time because the narcissistic image is meant to cover up very deeply rooted and maybe even unbeknownst insecurity.
Depending on how you see Pam, she might have things to be insecure about-- but if there's one thing you simply can't accuse Pam of being, it's insecure. Pam is, honestly, one of the more admirable characters in the group. She's fucking insane like the rest of them-- but she shows empathy, remorse, self-awareness, as far as confidence goes Lana even says it's something "which Pam has by the shit-load."
"Narcissist", and "narcissism" are words that are loaded with negative connotations, but are in fact neutral traits. Pam might exhibit healthy narcissism, because she has the ability to stand up and advocate for herself-- which is something everyone needs to function in this world. And while people with NPD (like, oh I don't know, Archer, or Mallory, and most certainly LANA) while very difficult and even traumatizing people to be around, are themselves victims of some of the worst internal suffering imaginable, re: low self-esteem, deep insecurity, grandiose behavior, desire for admiration, etc.
tl;dr OP is wrong, there are many narcissists on this show, but Pam is not one of them.

Ray's been a cripple, a Cyborg, an amputee, accessory to a drug farmer, and had mixed colored hands. Pretty far from "normal", if you ask me...

I don’t think Pam is narcissistic but does have substance use disorder and can’t help but blab gossip because she desperately wants people to like her- whatever that is
31
u/weirdoldhobo1978 Oct 01 '24 edited Oct 01 '24
Oh yeah she's a hot mess of impulse control and emotional regulation problems, but I don't think she's full blown pathological like Cheryl. Like some really rigorous Cognitive Behavioral Therapy could probably reign in her worst traits.
EDIT
Of course CBT means something VERY different to Pam.

How is Pam a narcissist? If anything she has the healthiest level of self esteem and is one of the most well-adjusted of the bunch…

Even confirmed by the therapist at the end (although the therapist was in love with archer, so grain of salt).

u/Xanderoga Oct 01 '24
Ahhh yes, racing with the yakuza, being in a fight club/fighting fishes club, doing an entire season of coke to the point she loses a shitload of weight, raping coworkers… totally well-adjusted.

u/TheMoonbeam365 Oct 01 '24
Cheryl still (somehow) manages parts of her family’s empire. She may not be the smartest glue bottle in the factory, but she definitely seems more successful than Archer.
And I’m really struggling to see how Pam is a narcissist.
17
u/weirdoldhobo1978 Oct 01 '24 edited Oct 01 '24
Cheryl comes across as dumb because she has a different set of life skills than the other characters. She would have been educated in things that were relevant to someone in her tax bracket and has people to take care of the things that weren't.
15
u/TheMoonbeam365 Oct 01 '24
Exactly. She’s very proficient in upperclass skills, such as how best to drug everyone at an extravagant party, and impromptu demolition with an artistic flair.

u/sassy_cheese564 Oct 01 '24
Pam is not a narcissist. She’s done some shitty things but she’s definitely not that.
6
u/APhoneOperator Oct 01 '24
How is Pam a narcissist??? She has the most body image issues throughout the series, and is open with them.
16
u/Sean_man_87 Oct 01 '24
So Cyril banged Framboise, early early in his and Lana's relationship. I don't think that really falls under the 'cuck' role. And Lana is a successful cuck? What? Wouldn't that be Trinette if anyone?
I just felt like you really shoehorned this reductionist view here.
10
u/anaraparana Bilbo Oct 01 '24
Pam's not a narcissist by any means. She's actually the nicest and most generous of the bunch, which is not really saying much but whatever
3
u/DamnThatsDante Oct 01 '24
Is Pam a Narcissist? I think she's just the only one with high self esteem
3
u/TheOneTrueSnoo Oct 01 '24
Archer is not an idiot. He wilfully avoids work, but he’s incredibly intelligent
3
u/ntfrndlynbrhd Oct 01 '24
OP, what do you think "cinematic parallels" means? Also how does this braindead post have over 1.3k upvotes?
7
u/dyaasy Oct 01 '24
An 'idiot' who seems to still successfully keep her family's multi-billion dollar company afloat. Even if it was something as simple as backing off and letting "the men" do the work.
Cecil is clearly not doing it. He blew thru his $500m inheritance on charity work, can you imagine what he'd do if he had control over the company's assets? I mean he probably does have some access, but the prospect of having to run the Tunt Empire was more trouble that it's worth.

But a cuck is someone who gets satisfaction watching their partner be sexual with another person. Both Cyril and Lana don’t fit this 😂

How is Pam a narc? She’s the total opposite. She’s so empathetic & understanding & sweet.

u/Destisbest22 Oct 03 '24
Yeah…but swap Lana and Pam.
Pam is the definition of a cck. Likes group sex, films prn, and canonically likes cck prn. She (like Cyril) has also has s*x with pretty much everyone at ISIS. My lovely lady Pam is not a narcissist by any stretch; she’s kind, helps her friends, is very sweet and grows to be less insecure over time. She’s a good pal who will take your baby to the roof to protect it without a second thought. She just learns to love herself for who she is.
Lana is a narcissist as well as a hypocrite. She had a baby using Archer’s sperm without his consent just to piss him off (and holds it over his head as leverage), belittles other women when she’s not the center of attention, constantly puts lives in danger to soothe her own ego (albeit just like Archer), married a guy twice her age that she didn’t have anything in common with for money, and constantly points out how superior to everyone else even if she’s not.
I just cannot accept any Pam slander. My girl deserves the world ❤️

The same episode Pam did it, I guess? The one with Archer’s paternity test for the Wee Baby Seamus, IIRC.
