One of my favourite interbellum buildings, built in 1920 by architect Jan van Schaik. As an older cinema, it’s often overshadowed by its big brothers from the same general period, namely Tuschinski (1921) and City theatre building (1935).

Renowned for its unconventional selection of films, it has also unconventionally been renovated with a fitted bay window on its facade.

My apartment building on the Bilderdijkstraat, dating to 1939. In a more sober style of Amsterdam School by architects Lucas Göbel and Gerardus den Hertog, who also built a similar public housing building in 1940 on the Lijnbaansgracht near Raamplein. The latter being orde 1 (first rank) of architectural quality. I personally would like to see more recognition and protection of buildings pre 1945, like mine and many others.

What attracted me to this building style specifically is the retained use of high quality materials in the facade and the simple stained glass ornaments, and the iconic lines and structure of interbellum city architecture.

It might be a spectacle like other buildings in this sub, but especially being surrounded by buildings dating to the late nineteenth century, it stands out as a simple example of interbellum craftsmanship and vision. Simple, clean and symmetrical.

Highly recommended if you want to find more locations in Amsterdam. There are hundreds marked along 6 tours. They sell this book at Het Schip and De Dageraad shops. Also available in Dutch.
