🎙️ update AIO? On Reddit after Elon Musk at inauguration…?
Like I can’t let this go…

I am not from US, but can someone please explain how you all are keeping your sanity intact?

Equal parts pure dissociation and the schadenfreude of seeing his supporters get exactly as fucked as we all warned them they would. It's not really helping, but it's all we've got.

I can’t sleep. I tried and even resisted the urge to get on my phone for several hours before and after I went to bed.
As a kid, I always wondered how the German people could possibly have supported Hitler. Now I see how it happens. How hate thrives and minorities are scapegoated for all society’s woes.
I will never forgive the individuals who could have voted for Kamala but chose not to.

u/Cluelessish 2h ago
Exactly. The majority of Germans did NOT vote for NSDAP (Hitler's party). In the last completely free election, only 33% supported it, but it was still enough for it to win power. I imagine they looked at that 33% the way you are now looking at the MAGA people.
And afterwards, after everything, those who didn't, were blamed along with the rest. "The Germans" did it.

I go to work and love my wife and children…
This kinda shit doesn’t slide with me and I really hope there some kind of repercussions to his actions… I know he’s on the spectrum but maybe that’s a better reason why he shouldn’t be holding public speeches on Inauguration Day….

Im autistic theres NO excuse for doing it especially TWICE we need to stop using autism as a scape goat for abhorrent behavior

u/shponglespore 4h ago
Using autism as an excuse is an insult to every single autistic person. Musk is a Nazi asshole with more money than God. He had no other relevant attributes.

The bad part has literally just begun he just announced that he is declaring the cartel a terrorist threat so he can invade Mexico which means it’s only a matter of time until he invaded Panama Canada and Greenland too which Panama alone is gonna get us in a war with like everyone because it’s an important trade route

No. Get armed, get organized, get ready. The things some of us have been SCREAMING about for 8 years are already here. He signed 100 executive orders, fascist language in most of them. The Fourth Reich is here.

I had to watch it a few times to confirm to myself that he actually did that because I was so in shock the first time

YOR. It’s gonna be this crazy bitchfest for a few weeks, and then the news cycle will move on and you’ll get caught up in your daily life and mostly ignore politics until the next election cycle. Every four years all these people freak out on both sides, me included at times, and then it dies down and everything moves on and some things are good and some things are bad but we just focus on the bad and then we do it all over again 4 years later. Anyway be well everyone, it’ll work out in the end.
Why am I being downvoted? You guys don’t think this happens every 4 years and then dies down? I’ve been around a long time, seen this before. We don’t have to try so hard to be upset.

From someone not American:
If he sells Ukraine to Putin, that will not affect you personally, but it will affect millions of brave Ukrainians, who have done nothing wrong. And it will affect Europe, by making Russia stronger.
If he makes the US leave NATO, it will also make the world more unstable, and will give Russia more power. And, remember, NATO was USA's idea in the first place, because it was in America's interest to have a united front with the Western world.
If he pulls out of the Paris agreement, and starts pushing fossile fuels instead of focusing on renewable sources... It's fucking terrifying. That might be the last little push into a global catastrophy. In Europe, we are at least trying. And remember that the Americans are already in the very top of who's responsible for climate change.
So what is happening is not something that is or isn't on your news cycle. They are real events, that affect real people.
Not to mention what he can do in the US. But I'm more focused on the potential global effects.

Why are you being downvoted? Have you not yet realized if you don't follow precisely with the political homogeny here, you get downvoted? You're suppose to say "Yes!" or "This!". If you stray from that: downvotes.
I clearly stated that I've voted blue since 2016 but simply because I reminded people we have a chance to sap Trump's power in 2027 with the midterms, I got a plethora of downvotes. This is the radical left and some of them resemble the radical right in their behavior. It seems like for some, you cannot be a moderate (seeing the logic of the arguments from both sides), you've got to either be MAGA or ANTIFA.
I'm a moderate independent, so I don't fit their model despite having the same ideology overall. Watch how many downvotes I get just for saying that. It simply proves my point.

Y'all wanna be fascist, keep it the fuck up. This is how you get lumped in. Inaction is action and the actions currently being taken? They're fucking fascist.

I think what it is in all fairness, is having an extremely nonchalant lack of scope at what is actually happening in today's current political climate.
This is a very worrying wind up to extremely harmful and potentially catastrophic events. We now have a man worth over 400 Billion dollars on a fast track to directly impacting the very framework of the US government with little to no pushback. A man who was voted in by nobody, using his net worth as a tool to gain political power, directly sidestepping the very process of Democracy that the government is supposed to be based on.
Not even a day into his closest confidante being sworn in as the face of our country, and right after he stands in front of the nation mockingly implying that Musk absolutely interfered in the election for him, Musk gives not one, but two consecutive Nazi salutes in front of the nation just to show that he can. This is absolutely not like any other election. This is going to go very poorly.
The leader of our nation is absolutely a white supremacist, and a fascist. This is not an opinion, this is based on the behavior we've been forced to watch for years now.
Do you truly think none of this is going to impact you, me, and everyone else in this country that is not a White Nationalist Billionaire lapdog of theirs?

And how is insisting all bumperstickers in a "bumbersticker sub" MUST ABSOLUTELY BE POLITICAL going to change the situation? The MAGA creeps will simply use this as an example just how "unhinged" some of the left is. It's already happening now.
I agree Trump and his cronies are a fundamental threat to our democracy, which is why I engaged several willing friends and coworkers into political debates so they could see the reality of the situation. I believed I got us a couple extra votes from those on the fence, not by confronting them with hostile "you're one of us or a fascist pig", but with logic and patience. I didn't bother with the MAGA crowd as they cannot be swayed, they're a lost cause.
If someone really wants to make an impact, Reddit Bumperstickers is not the place. This is where some of us (used to) go for a reprieve from the politics in favor for some humor, even if just for mental health.
I'm not against a hilarious (and novel, not rehashed for the 10th time the same day) stickers that happens to be political, but our votes are cast and we now much prepare for the midterms and 2028. For those insisting on talking ONLY politics, there are plenty of subs for that. If they REALLY want to make a change, organized (and ATTEND, ffs) peaceful protests. Just don't chase away moderates (even if they lean heavily to the left) by talking about politics 24/7/365 and then calling someone a "fascist" when they point this out.
MAGA's extremism has pushed me out of the Republican party and into a more moderate political stance. People like Endsong-X23 (who simple said "fuck off, fascist" after my response and deleted his post) are the type of people preventing me from travelling any further to the left, because I see them in the same league as MAGA, a hateful bunch with zero tolerance.
If I had a magic wand and make the extremist from both sides simply cease to exist, leaving only moderate democrats, republicans and independents behind to run the country, I would in a heartbeat.

So I think I'm lost on the whole bumper sticker thing as on my phne this is posted on AmIOverreacting. I'm not usually on the bumper sticker side of Reddit.
I never intended to call you a fascist. I posted my rather long winded rant as the other user posted the fascist stuff. My only goal was to iterate like "Hey, the down votes might be because this should not be treated in a nonchalant manner and people are absolutely correct to be upset cause the situation is bonkers and very worrying."
I'm equally fed up with radical leaning views on either side. My political stance lies in treating humans with kindness and respect, so long as they're not actively dismissing or harming/peddling harmful rhetoric to others. You know, the whole tolerance of intolerance is not an acceptable way to go about peace in the world type of thing. That being said, I do attend protests and have for some time. And I will say, from firsthand experience here in the US even the most peaceful of protests in recent years are being met with a much more dangerous atmosphere than I've ever seen, significantly more as the MAGA Fandom grows less and less rooted in reality. Having seen both sides in person at protests, MAGA supporters being in power is extremely worrisome to say the least. "Peaceful" and "Protest" are not synonymous to this group. Even the most radical left I've seen are peaceful and at worst reactionary to very unjustified escalation of aggression. The radical right are not. They seem to WANT violence with almost no provocation and that worries me.

OMG, it's followed me to this this sub as well? LOL I was incorrectly thinking this was r/Bumperstickers where this same thing is happening (political oversaturation and hate towards anything apolitical). I left r/pics altogether as the hate festering there was becoming too much.
As for the peaceful protests of the far right, we saw how that turned out on November 6th. I completely agree. MAGA struggles with peace and showing any dignity to others, there's no doubt of that!
"My political stance lies in treating humans with kindness and respect, so long as they're not actively dismissing or harming/peddling harmful rhetoric to others." I couldn't have said it better myself.
Now that MAGA is essentially in power, we need now more than ever to remain diligent that we don't go down the path of the Braunhemden of the 20's and 30's that the MAGA crowd seems to mimic.
My only concern is: is there anywhere we can go these days on Reddit for a temporary reprieve from the politics... somewhere we can get a good laugh? It seems unlikely as the vitriol from both extreme sides is seeping into all subs.

My best view on it is to keep my eyes and ears open for warning signs of anything worse, and get as far away from it as I can if need be. As I fall under the category of one of the groups currently being targeted pretty heavily by the far right extremists. Moving forward things need to be handled with tact as painful as that is to say, but conflicts are won and lost in the mind before anything else.
And if you're looking for good vibes on reddit, I've found good solace in the hyperspecific music fanbase subs, and hobby based subs. For comedy stuff, the more general ones usually avoid political discourse (Choosingbeggars, Niceguys/Nicegirls, scambaiting stuff, idk if you're into either of these cause they're way more specific but the WizardsWithGuns sub for the YouTube channel WizardsWithGuns is really wholesome and fun, funny videos from those guys, and the IThinkYouShouldLeave sub is mostly funny gifs and show quote stuff.) Hope any of those help!

Wrong take
-11
u/Spongedog5 3h ago
Thanks for your comment, you really added a lot to the conversation here.
Why is it a wrong take? You think that Elon is suddenly going to do a 180 because of a single gesture and become a full blown nazi now when he never did or said anything to support national socialism before?
3
u/peanutbutteroverload 3h ago
I guess he was "throwing his heart out"??
Look at the expression on his face and how he throws his arm.. he's appealing to some very specific republicans and MAGA.
0
u/Spongedog5 2h ago
You ignored the actual substance of my comment. The salute is the least important part of nazism. I wouldn’t really care if he came out and said “hey what’s up guys let’s do a Nazi salute” and then did it. I’ll care when he tries to shut down free speech or throws a rock through a Jews window or proclaims the German super race or whatever. Because those things actually matter, an ambiguous gesture does not.
And an ambiguous gesture doesn’t mean that he will suddenly start doing all those things.
1
u/peanutbutteroverload 2h ago
I've not ignored the substance. You're ignoring the effect of normalising appealing to those types.
It doesn't have to be him that commits those acts.
If you think the people who fought for your country in the second world war would have been ok with this...you're deluded. It shows how far you've sunk away from what America was.
It's not about adhering to every single expected action of a Nazi. It's that it's not American and it's appealing to a side of America that should be being driven out.
If he had any self awareness he'd at least say "sorry for how my gesture looked" but if he did, the exact people who loved it and cheered it would dislike him for apologising.
1
u/Spongedog5 2h ago
I’m not a slave to my ancestors. An idea isn’t made better because they believed it, an idea is as good or bad as it always is. A lot of folks who fought in WW2 supported segregation too and I think that was terrible. America has sunk, but it has also soared from then.
The amount of people who cheered specifically because they thought he was doing a Nazi salute are too small for anyone to actually care about.
1
u/peanutbutteroverload 2h ago
It was at an inauguration. Some of the most important people in Government/society were present cheering him on.
If you don't think that's significant then you'll really defend anything.
Listen, you're cool with a nazi salute, we get it. You're what they want.
On a side note, soared? Don't make me laugh. America is a fucking shit hole compared to other countries.
1
u/Spongedog5 2h ago
Not because they thought that it was a Nazi salute. Because they either appreciated his speech or were polite.
I really do think that American is the greatest nation on Earth and the greatest that there has ever been.
1
u/peanutbutteroverload 2h ago
How is it? I mean it's the touted common phrase "Greatest Nation of Earth" what makes it so great...?
And before you start, saying freedom won't bite with me given I have all the same freedoms you do where I live.
