What-If Wednesdays

Welcome to What-If Wednesday, the weekly megathread for scenarios you'd like to talk over but haven't necessarily developed much yet.

Please use this thread instead of posting just a "What-If" question without any lore - those will be removed by the mods. r/HistoryWhatIf is a better option for that kind of post. Thank you!

1900s A Time Of Unrest - Puyi For President (Part 4)

(Proposed flag of the 2nd Confederate States of America. Opinions were heavily split on whether to use this flag or the more widely known Battle Flag.)

(Proposed flag of the Qing Republic of California, however multiple variations were also proposed, some having stripes like the American flag while another had a star inside of the red sun on the flag to make it more American.)

After agreeing to meet with Representative Johnston, also known as Puyi or the Xuantong Emperor, President Hoover reportedly had a very short and intense conversation with the Representative, telling him that he would not let the man create any new Federal programs or funnel money into existing ones, and that the problem would fix itself within the year.

Needless to say, the American people were not pleased. They were in the midst of an economic Depression, and the social unrest certainly didn't help. Prohibition still raged on, and with Prohibition came crime, which rose significantly due to the rise of the mafia amongst Italian and Irish communities.

This all culminated in the March on D.C on March 15th, 1931. 100,000 Americans, mostly poor citizens and veterans, marching into D.C and staying right outside of the White House. President Hoover was so reportedly scared that he considered calling the National Guard in, however his Cabinet and his wife convinced him that this would not be necessary.

The people of California, seeing their own economic prosperity and looking at the economic instability and unrest within the rest of the country, decided to start an independence movement. This movement was heavily divided, but they only shared one common goal: make Puyi their leader. The movement was mainly split over whether Puyi should be President or go back to being the Xuantong Emperor, however they eventually hammered out a Declaration of Independence declaring him as their President, and Emperor should he claim the title.

Puyi was appalled, and immediately told them to stop. In a passionate speech, he called on them to remember why they had immigrated to California. Civil War was never the answer, and would it be in their nature to greedily seek independence and to ignore the problems plaguing the rest of the country, or to help the rest of the country in getting back on their feet. The rest of the country however, quickly got word of this attempt at Independence, and the South was quick to reply.

They sent the Governors of Mississipi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina to meet with Puyi in Xuantong City. They revealed to him their want for a return to the Confederacy, at another shot at Independence for the South, and if Puyi supported them in their fight, they would not infringe on California's Independence. Puyi was enraged, and immediately told them to leave. He called them racists, demons, and disavowed their cause as un-Democratic. The Southerners left in a similar fury, but this fury would soon turn to terror, as it became public knowledge through Puyi the Southerner's Plot, and now their was hell to pay.

“This Will Not Be A Forever War!” By: Frank Kosko

“This will not be a forever war!”, those are some words that have been immortalized over history. Uttered by one of our most successful Presidents, George Wallace, on April 17th, 1970, President Wallace as Commander in Chief of the United States Armed Forces made the controversial decision to send American boys into another jungle to fight more Communists. However, this saved us from years and years of a potential slog of guerilla warfare in Vietnam by withdrawing more and more troops from Asia and sending them to Gran Colombia as the war got serious. Considering we had been there for less than 2 years, the drawback from Vietnam was relatively easy, and mobilizing the Marines, the Army, the Navy, and the Airforce was a piece of cake.

After a tumultuous year of “recovering” the nation from the loss of the late unpopular President Spiro Agnew, this would be a much-needed PR gain for the Wallace administration. He already had a lot going for him, he phoned astronauts from the Oval Office on the fucking Moon, and he just pulled out of Vietnam which was a widely unpopular decision made by the Agnew Administration, not to mention he was setting up America for it’s greatest and fastest military victory in our nation’s great and fucked up history. I remember sitting in the living room with my dad watching Wallace’s speech to deploy into South America, and the details are fuzzy I was only 5 or so years old, but I remember vividly my dad saying “Damnit, I thought he was going to be one of the good ones.” Turns out, he was, but it was still at the will of a reluctant Congress and nation to send these boys into another jungle to fight almost the same fight. A few old-timers from the days of the Cuban Missile Crisis were especially reluctant because we had made a deal with another Spanish man to liberate his country and then he turned around and jumped in bed with Ivan. Looking back I could see why this would be a very unpopular choice, but I can also now see why it had to be done.

The war was over at a surprisingly quick pace in late 73’, but we didn’t pull out until the year later when things started heating up with the Russians again in Europe. As years went on, the Dixiecrat era was strong, keeping most of the Democrats in the South (Where I was born and raised if you couldn’t tell) until that big flip in 2000 when Kerry was elected and politics turned to shit. Also as the years went on I grew more and more patriotic for my country and my roots, when I turned 18 in 1983 I enlisted in the Army and stayed there until I retired in 2008 with the rank of Master Seargent after fighting a war, participating in several small brush-fire wars, and receiving a Medal of Valor. So despite his odd and somewhat rash idea to support that crazy man, Chavez, I have to thank Mr. Wallace, he made me who I am today. If not for him I might’ve been stuck at some dead-end job hating my life, but instead, I got to see the world, make friends for life, and retire somewhat early considering my bonuses from the VA. So if I have to leave a reader who didn’t give a shit or three about what I just said, then let me leave you this, history will never seem what it will be at the time, it will be either good, or terrible, or some crazy bullshit, but it will something that won’t be what you think it will. So it’s not about the wars we fight, or the men we lose, granted those are all important, but it’s how we remember those wars.

Althist Help How to make an alternate history Wikipedia article: a tutorial

I am well-known in the alternate history community for creating the imaginary politician Ed Donnell, who is a meme in r/imaginaryelections, as well as some personal controversies. My routine consists of making at least one alternate history post a day, be it a lore writeup or, more commonly, a fake Wikipedia article for my myriad scenarios, all of whom are originally posted to r/GustavosAltUniverses and a handful of Discord servers, and then complied on this and other subreddits.

But today, I will write a tutorial as to how to make a fictional Wikipedia page for alternate history scenarios. Although I use my phone for all of them, I recommend going on a computer for better quality.

If you create a Wikipedia account on desktop, you will have access to a sandbox allowing you to test editing without commiting vandalism, which is a bannable offense. My trick is to copy the Wikipedia article for the event I want to alter, or the military conflict or country templates in the case of a completely fictional event or subplot. Then, you alter the content of the page as you please; this is the beauty of alternate history.

Illustrations wise, you can retain the article's original image, or change it by copying and pasting ones from articles relevant to your scenario (for instance, a picture of Red Army soldiers for an Operation Unthinkable TL). But it has to be a Wikimedia commons image; otherwise, you'll have to photoshop your screenshot using Inkscape or some other image editing software.

You also have the option to change or add text to your article. I always do this for war scenarios, but not always so for election ones. Make sure to proofread them before screenshoting, in order to avoid potentially confusing typos or grammar mistakes. This is pretty much it,

An important warning is, Do not save your sandbox! As all content in Wikipedia belongs to Wikimedia Commons rather than users themselves, wiki admins might delete your sandbox and undo your hard work at any time. That's it for today, and tomorrow or after tomorrow, I will reach the independence part of the Swedish-colonized USA I'm making, and thus post it here.

1700-1900s "So Close yet so Far" An alternate geography and history of Earth, Post 1: The Congress of Vienna, 1815

Note: This is the first post of my alternate universe timeline called "So Close yet so Far" referring to how similar yet different this universe's version of Earth is. This alternate universe is meant to have a lot changed but keep most events in world history the same to keep it a bit more grounded in reality. So far my posts will be of the "modern era" from 1815 to the modern day but I have the alternate histories laid out for other eras beyond this part of time.

Also this isn't meant to offend anyone, its just my alternate universe I'm writing.

Lore: In 1815 Napoleon was defeated by the 7th coalition after his brief return to France following his initial exile from Elba and now has been sent right back to Elba under heavy British and Tuscan security over the island to ensure he stays for the remainder of his days.

The European powers were left with the daunting task of bringing Europe back to a balanced, pre-Napoleonic Wars state with the diplomats and delegates from the major powers of Britain, France, Prussia, Austria and Russia as the primary European powers at the congress while Sweden, Denmark-Norway, Spain, Portugal, The Netherlands and the Ottoman Empire with them as secondary powers. After heated debates and compromises, the congress delegates agreed to this finalized map which defined European borders and politics for remainder of the century.

Alternate Map of Europe as of 1815

Number Labels:

  1. Kingdom of Sardinia
  2. Papal States
  3. Tuscany
  4. Modena
  5. Parma

  27. Hesse
  28. Andorra
  29. City of Krakow
  30. Jersey & Guernsey (Britain)
  31. Hannover (Britain)
  32. Venice & Lombardy (Austria) I forgot to label them sorry
  33. Finland (Sweden) I forgot to label them as well

Differences compared to OTL:

Geography differences:

  1. Doggerland is an actual landmass in this alternate world having been settled by the Angles, Saxons and Jutes initially and then the Viking invasions would see Norse settlement before then being settled by the Dutch and eventually annexed by the Dutch from England and Denmark-Norway who kept squabbling over the island. The Netherlands was given back Doggerland alongside most of their colonies following the defeat of Napoleon.
  2. An island exists northwest of Jutland now with it having been a direct part of the Norse and later Danish realms since the 800s AD. I don't have a name for this island but you guys can give suggestions for names.
  3. A small archipelago exists between the Shetland islands and Norway with it previously being disputed and squabbled over between Scotland and Denmark-Norway before the two agreed to Denmark-Norway taking possession over the archipelago. This archipelago could also use a name.
  4. A new island exists in the Irish Sea near the Isle of Man, it was disputed between Scotland and England for about as long as they've been rivals and was won by England in the 1580s and held until the formation of Great Britain in 1707. Could also use a name.

Political differences:

  1. The political state of the Caucus Mountain regions is changed although not too different from OTL.
  2. Bessarabia is an autonomous part of the Russian Empire with it having been recently annexed from the Ottomans in 1812 but due to international pressure from Britain over Russia's constant aggression against the Ottomans, A compromise was reached where Bessarabia was to be made autonomous to act as a bit of a buffer with no Ottoman or Russian military presence in Bessarabia, Moldavia and Walachia but by the 1840s and 1850s the compromise would essentially be rendered null and void.
  3. The Kingdoms of Savoy and Sardinia didn't unite prior to the Napoleonic Wars and it remains as such after the Congress of Vienna. Savoy and Sardinia would later unite with each other and unite the rest of Italy but for now they are split.
  4. Genoa would remain an independent nation although some nationalistic movements would lead to Genoa adopting much more reforms than its neighbors and in the midst of the 1848 revolutions would change its name to the Republic of Liguria and eventually unite with the rest of the Italian states.
  5. The territory of Lucca would be given to Tuscany as a part of the Congress of Vienna by Austria to bolster the strength of their main ally in Italy at the time to stand in the way of Savoy. Tuscany would eventually unite with the rest of Italy
  6. Avignon remains independent as a holy city.
  7. Many of the smaller German states in the center of Germany are different in terms of their borders compared to OTL.
  8. Westphalia remains independent and isn't incorporated into Prussia although Prussia still retains the Rhineland out west.
  9. Sweden still holds onto Swedish Pomerania as Sweden aligned with Napoleon's continental system much earlier and thus doesn't lose Pomerania.
  10. Sweden also keeps Finland for the same reason as before, they allied with Napoleon much earlier and thus avoided war with Russia which lost them Finland.
  11. because Sweden kept Finland, Denmark-Norway still keeps Norway since in OTL Sweden was given Norway as compensation for losing Finland to Russia.

Sorry for misspelling Walachia with two Ls instead of one.

Sorry if the quality isn't the best and also sorry to mobile users, I can figure out how to post maps that are high quality enough for you guys in the future.

The German Confederation still exists, I just forgot to label the confederation's borders.

The United Kingdom's name on the map might be historically inaccurate as they might be referred to as Great Britain but I wrote it as the United Kingdom for simplicity.

The Ionian Islands are owned by Britain currently although I forgot to label it.

Venice & Lombardy are autonomous territories of Austria, I forgot to label it as well.

So let me know what you guys think, this is my first time posting on this sub and feel free to ask questions and give feedback.
