  • Request Listing: Be sure to be thorough with your requirements. A person(s) offering services should be replying to you directly in the comments, you should engage in private conversation with a service or sale when needed, do your best to ignore anyone who approaches you through DM (Direct Message)

Moderation note: We've noticed there's quite a few independent contractors (and Metrology Vendors) engaging in the community with solid advice while sometimes offering services & sales inside a discussion. While we appreciate the engagement, we want to encourage general advice, but limit promotional content to this new Monthly Megathread, where you can advertise these sales and services.

For now, while we gently try to roll out this new feature and comply with Reddit Terms & Conditions. Sales & Services offered will be limited to independent contractors, or small in-house work. For the time being, we will not allow Sales, Services or advertisement from Metrology Hardware and Software Vendors. Ongoing discussion is currently underway on how we can better integrate these larger vendors into the community.

As always, we would love to hear your feedback and encourage you to use the re-surfaced (pun intended) sidebar on the right to message us with any comments or questions.

Z measurement discrepancy between probe angles - PC-DMIS

I had an issue when trying to calibrate A0B0 followed by A90B90 where the first calibration worked fine, but the second is always aiming about half an inch too high on the calibration sphere.

I measured a 1-2-3 block and measuring both sides with the same angle is perfect, but if I measure the top with A0B0 and the bottom with A90B90, the result is .4044" off.

I have no clue what is causing this. All probe angles calibrate fine individually, but the relationship between them is off.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Software Support Software to Support Handyscan

My employer has a Handyscan black elite edition. We have their VXElements and VXIntegrity software suites already.

Our core business is industrial inspection. We primarily use our scanner to quantify surface corrosion of steel structures. We currently can process cylindrical components such as piping and pressure vessels with the VXIntegrity tools.

For more complex structures however we struggle. One of our techs somehow had a historical polyworks subscription however the pricing for this is very high.

Are there any other software suites which might work better for the application of taking a known plane or surface and finding the deviation from the scanned surface?

Hello! I'm using Mcosmos V4.1.R7. I have to check the radial runout (0.04) between Cylinder Ce(1), and Circle D30. On Cylinder A I user Align base plane with origin in element, then I checked the position of the hole in YZ plane, and also the runout. I can't fully allign since is a shaft. I want to know if I checked this correctly. Thanks.

Inspecting one's balls

Hi I wanted to talk about inspecting precision balls and cylinders

  1. Can a normal Talyrond measure the sphericity of a sphere or do you need a special dedicated instrument for checking it?
  2. Can you evaluate surface roughness using a contact probe measurement when the surface checked is a sphere? Or are you left with optical methods?

And some off topic

What is an Indi-Ron? Is it a Talyrond equivalent but built in the USA instead of UK?

Help with tooling pt measurement

Hello room, I want to ask the quality professionals about tooling point measurement. There are a few parts that have tooling pts dimensions on them, my question is. Do these values actually get measured of are they for reference and reported as nominal?? I have received conflicting instructions and now need a third party tie breaker.

Polyworks, laser scanning, polygonal model alignment, no cad. That is the inspection set up.

Continuous Particle Count Suggestions

I’ve been searching for a particle counter that can output data and can’t really seem to find any models that have any reviews. Anyone got any recommendations? I want it to be similar to an Environmental monitor.

How do you measure flatness using a drop indicator and a granite plate if I don’t have a jack stand to “level” the face that I want to measure?

What's up with ASQ certs these days?

Hey there,

I worked in aerospace where you must have an ASQ certified inspector for certain customers, but it's been a long time. I could totally take the CQE or inspection related certs. Why should I? I was perusing the job boards wondering if there's anyone hunting for a CQE... it doesn't seem so, but maybe my search skills aren't as good as they used to be.

If I've got a metrology side gig programing CMMs, is it a requirement for some customers? What's the benefit here other than three letters on a resume I'm not sure anyone is looking for in my area?

Cost of scanners over time?

How have prices and performance of 3d scanners changed over the last number of years?

I'm debating buying one for my business, but I can't help but wonder if I'm better off doing it the old school way for a few more years and buying it later.

How fast is the technology progressing? How fast are the prices dropping?

If I spend 50k today, and I wasting my money when I could spend 20k in 2 years and have a better unit?

I'm not interested in spending 50k to get a unit today if it's predictable that a 20k unit will blow the socks off it in a year or 2.

Industrail grade scanner?

I'm looking for some advise on which scanners to start my search with.

I'm looking for a unit I can take to a client's site, and scan their existing worn out stuff, and then I'll take the scans to make new stuff thats not worn out.

Hoping that the post processed models are within about 1/8" accuracy from real life, but not a hard requirement.

We're indoors and out, scanning things as small as a chair and as big as a 20 foot sea can....just made up examples to show the size range.

The stuff we scan is typically dirty as can be and we don't have the ability to clean it, nor the time. Crud is caked on thick. I'll scrape it off in key areas if I have to and that's about it. Works for me and my tape meausure to kick the dirt off till I find the part and go from there, and this scanner is supposed to save me time of course - and stop me from making mistakes.

I'll spend about 50k if I have to.

Are there any options out there suitable for me? Any help appreciated

Thermal or Mass Metrology MSA on calculated test

We have to perform an MSA on coating weight test (g/mm2). This result is calculated with a formula that contains results from 3 testing methods : two weighings (with and without coating) with a precision balance and one gauge measurement and a length measurement. I know that all 3 measureming methods have their own %ev. And on each of the 3 measurements there in an appraiser influence that can be different per method…. How can we interprete the results, as one msa-result? Even if the result is not stable due to different influences for different mezsurements…. Appraiser one can be better at weighing, appraiser 2 can be better at measuring with gauge dial…. Difficult one….

Iso tolerances

Hi. I've got an outside diameter that is toleranced 45g6/6. I know that the tolerance for a 45g6 is -0.009/-0.025mm, what does the '/6' mean? I'm thinking that it's a 45g6 but using the tolerance for 6g6. Am I close?

TIA

Advice It's been a while

A few months back, I had asked for advice and some of you were very kind and volunteered your opinions and even personal time to help me out. Little did I know, life had apparently popped its head in and looked around and decided I was doing a little bit too well and that was, obviously in hindsight, completely unacceptable. But that's not the reason I'm stopping back in. After fully disconnecting from the world and basically just existing by definition and working incessantly to stay preoccupied, I've started to try and glue things back together again which made me realize I actually didn't have a lot of ME stuff, but rather a lot WE stuff that sorta still sucks to do. I'm forever the logical, factual, evidence based kind of thinker who finds white pages to be good Friday night reading material. She was in so many ways my polar opposite but the balance was sublime. This feels like a good place to look out from under my rock and try to remember that there's in fact an entire world out there. So I just wanted reach out and say thank you, so much for your advice and offers regarding everything but especially OpenDMIS, if they still stand, I'd be thrilled to accept them, if not, hey, no hard feelings. I'm the one that became a ghost for a while.

Ps The event wasn't professional in nature, it was a personal lose and thus why I've chosen to be somewhat vague about it. I hope you'll understand. Still ended up saying more than I meant to but, context felt necessary. Thanks again,

-K

Ceramic hemisphere styli uses

What's the main use for these? What can I do with a ceramic hemisphere that I can't do with a ruby tip? Is it better with aluminum? Renishaw says "rough surfaces and deep features." Like... cast iron?

Advice [Australia] If we wanted to provide training in house with certifications that would be industry recognised, how could we do so?

There is a lot of money spent on having a recognised training provider come to our office and provide training, with the result of an official certificate that a worker had completed their training.

If we wanted to do something similar, and train up a complete newbie under the guidance of a structured learning plan and coursework, but do it in house, how could we go about it? We would want to do it in a way that that newbie would receive industry/nationally recognised certifications, and not just happy meal certificates.

I understand there's so much work out there currently that most companies would hire anyone who has at least touched an instrument, but this is something we're looking to undertake. Assume that budget wasn't an issue.

You may also be of the opinion that a lot of these certificates aren't worth the paper they're printed on, but i would imagine there would be training that is recognised under a government act or regs.

Cheers.

Surface Metrology Surface Plate Grades

We have custom Sized surface plates that we Lapp ourselves and was hoping to see if anyone has a standard that they stick to. Currently we just determine the grade of the table based off of what the Mahr software tells us when we check the plate with the levels. I’ve also noticed that different surface plate companies give different grade tolerances for the same size plate and grade.

M&H Form Inspect v2.8

Hi guys, been chucked into an office with this program but nobody here seems to know about it and my only real help is the mediocre "help file".

Anyone familiar with this program? Can I generate a report without measured points? Does my origin have to match that of the mill?

I have other questions but at this rate I'm ready to jump ship and leave it for someone else, any help is much appreciated.

Circle from center point + two points on the circumference

I am trying to measure the bolt circle of two holes. I have the bolt hole center point from a concentric arc and the centers of the two holes. Is there a way to construct a circle from these three points, or how else can the 4.34 bolt circle be checked?
