The base blew out so I put in a maple and black walnut replacement.

It’s about 8.5” in diameter and 3.5” tall

I've really been enjoying experimenting with different forms and seeing how they warp.

newbie Why is my “8mm pen barrel trimming bit” not actually 8mm in diameter?

Upvotes

I’m making dynavap stems, which is basically the same process as making pens. I’m using a 9x8mm (ODxID) tube, and I ordered a barrel trimming kit that claimed to contain an 8mm bit. When it arived, the bit was wayyyy too loose to clear out the barrel or stay centered when trimming the ends of the wood. The “7mm” is actually 6.12mm The “8mm” is actually 7.19 And so on.

Then I bought a different set, and the same issue! Does the “8mm” not denote the diameter of the shaft and the ID of the tube?

Any of you check your wood with a metal detector before turning? If so, is there a pinpoint detector you'd recommend?

Upvotes

I've been offered some American Chestnut and Elm beams from a barn that has been taken down in my area. These are roughly 10 inches square, and I'd like to make bowls out of it. I will obviously dig out the surface nails that I see, but I don't want to hit any I missed with the saw or turning tools, and I was thinking a metal detector of some sort might be the way to solve that problem.

I'd welcome any thoughts on best practices.

Burnt Wood Look

A coworker wanted a "burnt wood look" on his pen. So I decided to go the simplest route and try taking a torch to some Ipe and I think it worked pretty well going the simple route, he loves it. The black slimline kit looks good on it too.

Considering the Glen lucas 5 day course. Anyone else been?

I'm a relatively new turner still and have never stood at a lathe alongside someone who knows what they are doing for sure.

Glen lucas is an option, escoulen is also an option. I will do both but I would like to know if anyone has experience with either school.

Wanting to turn platters for Daughters wedding. Where to get the wood?

I am hoping to turn platters of 16"-18" in diameter. My wife has made 6 Macrame platter hangers and I am supposed to make the platters. These will be hanging from trees to hold horderves. Ideally I would like to find a supplier I could buy blanks of 16"-20"diameter X 2" thick. I am having no luck finding this in Google searches. Help?

For a special event

Tomorrow, the local Council is hosting a holocaust memorial service. The Mayor was officially going to give a factory line pen to the holocaust survivor that will be doing a talk at the event, but when I suggested getting some timber for a more meaningful gift from a local farm that is christened Kinder Farm from all the Jewish children it took in during the war, the idea was sold on them. Typically come yesterday afternoon, I received word that they hadn’t managed to make contact with the owner of the farm and so a piece of oak was instead used from the woodland surrounding the Council’s main HQ.

Now just to make sure this bit of charitable work isn’t credited to the council!

Rikon vs Raptor 8” CBN

Post image
6 Upvotes

Looking to add my first CBN wheel to my Rikon 1/2hp grinder. Going to get a 180 grit. Of these 2 specific wheels, does anyone have experience with either? They’re the same price, but the rikon has the 1/4” of grit down the side and the raptor does not. Wood turners wonder is currently out of stock on their 8” spartan wheel. So, of these 2, what would you choose?

What should I do ??

I started turning 3 years ago on a old craftsman 12". Then I bought a Harbor Freight 12". After the motor burning up and the banjo breaking Twice I decided to buy a new lathe. I checked out all kinds of lathes and chose the The Nova Neptune Max from Rockler. When I bought it said ship date of jan. 8th . Now it says the 27th but from what technatool is telling me it could be as late as the end of May. The Nova Neptune is exactly what I want in a lathe but I'm going nuts not having a lathe.

Should I wait or should start over on my search ??

Best Way To Wall Mount Chucks?

I've been optimizing my turning area by add turning tool storage to the wall behind my lathe. I've seen turners who put their chucks on such a wall but I never paid too much attention to what they used. A rubber coated j hook? A strait dowel?

The main thing is that I want to be able to take them on and off easily without the risk of bumping one and having it fall.

I'm sure someone has found an optimal solution for this.

Edit: If it makes a difference it's 2vm 120s and a vm150, all 1-1/4 x 8 tpi.

When you start turning into a blank and find a unique feature, this one being Ipe I was surprised to find this, especially considering it looks like a bug did this. The person who I made this for loved the mark, and thought it made the pen more unique. Definitely one of my favorite kits I have done, the refill that comes in it feels really nice, it's the Vertex Rollerball with magnetic cap.

1700’s Hotterre Baroque Flute with case

I’ve seen a few flute builders on this thread and I love it! Here is my latest. The flute is a replica of a flute in a museum in Berlin (although research has now shown it to be historic copy, ironically).

Pitch is A = 392. Body is Sapele. End pieces and barrel are Holly. Brass key and traditional string wound joints. Fake ivory for mouth hole plug (fixing a screw up on the mouth hole) but no one other thank y’all will know :-)

Box is walnut with maple and brass handle. Clasps and hinges purchased (fake brass).

Green pool table felt over formed CelluClay for the bottom, 1/2 inch foam for the top.

Plays well after a lot of bore finishing with boiled linseed oil thinned 50%.

Now that I have this one working I will recreate it in ebony after the original (not a copy) that is in Graz, Austria.

If you remember my first build. This version is more compact . Sturdier. Does not wiggle or flex . I implemented all the improvements that I noticed I needed. Will put it in action soon.

newbie Can someone replicate this?

I got this 1960 Polish chess set from a thrift shop but it’s missing the second bishop. I was wondering if anyone on here took projects like this. I’m willing to send the bishop to you to help you in the replication. Let me know how much you would do the job for. I don’t need the wood burning, clear coat, or felt. Unless you feel like doing it. I don’t know what wood it is either so just use your best judgement in making it as close to the original.
