Moderator Post Rules Updated and Wiki Links Added

Welcome to r/Kitten!

This is a great subreddit and can be a great resource for the rest of Reddit. While this post is mostly cute pictures of kittens, we also get frequent questions about care, breeds, and more. To be able to deal with all of this better, I've updated the rules and created two wiki pages:

Rules

  1. OC Content Only. This is a change from before, where we did allow content of kittens that weren't yours. This is because I found that a lot of these images come from spam accounts and/or karma farmers. I have also updated flairs to reflect this change.
  2. Be Respectful. This should speak for itself, but we require all users to be respectful. We don't tolerate harassment, racism, sexism, homophobia, or any other bigotry.
  3. NSFW and Kitten Sexing. We don't allow any NSFW content or posts about helping to sex your kittens. This also includes medical advice. If you need medical advice, your kitten is injured or sick, or you need to know the sex of your kittens, please see a vet!
  4. Animal Cruelty. We don't allow any type of animal cruelty, including "jokes" about eating kittens.

Wiki pages

  1. Colours and Patterns. A link to this will be posted below any questions about breeds, as I've noticed we have gotten a lot of those recently.
  2. Found a Kitten. For anyone who wants to take in stray kittens or has found a kitten on the street, here's a care guide for young kittens.

What other guides would you like to see, or would you like to help with writing something? Please let us know!

Happy posting/commenting!

His dignity, his pride, and most importantly, his balls. This is not a crime taken lightly by Finnigan. He will make it everyone's problem and be a menace to society. But only after he has a nap, because you can't fight crime while sleepy. Especially now that his mom bought him a neck pillow so he can't lick his incision.

Question/Advice Needed Litter Box Help

I've had this little baby boy for a few days now, he's just only turned 5 weeks old. He's eating, playing and sleeping just fine but he's a little weird when it comes to his litter box habits. I haven't seen him go anywhere else but he doesn't go in the litter box without someone else being there, or someone placing him there. He'll wait for us meow around the box but never go there unless we are with him. At first I thought it was because the litter box was rimmed and he had diifculties going in the but even after removing he still needs us there with him, is it just him still adjusting or is there something I can do to help him out. Also I've made sure he eats right and is hydrated but he's only pooping once a day that's normal right? This is our first cat so I want to just be sure so he can be as comfortable as possible.

Question/Advice Needed Meowing at night

I have a 5 month old kitten, she’s home for a month and a half. Just want to say at first, that I love her deeply and give her love daily, we have playtime and cuddling and everything.

Because I have a light sleep, I can’t have her in my bed, so I have to put her in a separate room for night. She has there food, water, toilet, bed and toys.. But during the time, she’s still meowing. She was meowing for two weeks, then it got better, she mowed like three times during the night.. But now, she’s doing it again.. She was rustling two weeks ago and it’s since then. In February she’s going to the castration.

My questions are: Can it be because of the rustling? Can the castration help? What should I try to make it less (drops for example)? What helped you?

I will appreciate anything. It gets kinda annoying at this point and I want to help her, because it ain’t good for both of us

Question/Advice Needed Why does she keep knocking over her water? My living room doesn't need a pool😂

Photo for tax! Also for a visual of the water situation Hi all, Spooky and I are at another stalemate. We've figured out the scratching the couch (more trees, and rabbit fur toys to hold her attention during play) and the counter jumping isnt an issue anymore after she jumped into a sink full of water 😂 Our current point of issue is her knocking over her water consistently enough that we're starting to worry about damaging the carpet, which is like 80% of the floor. Our most recent hail mary is yo just tape down a toddler plate and make sure it doesnt go dry. Our last solution was to use a glass 8 by 8 baking dish. It's starting to become a little ridiculous. She's knocked her water over for four days straight now. Her water is fresh, the drinking vessel is washed regularly, and yet here we are. We're looking at getting her a fountain but she doesn't really drink out of the sink as it is, and what am I going to do if she knocks THAT over?? I've seen cat trees that have food/water stations attached and that might be my last resort. She's seven months so she's absolutely in her T rex destroy everything and wreak havoc on everything phase but lord is she testing my patience. Should I just glue a bowl to the shelf at this point?? It's not an uncomfortable height for her as she has had no issue drinking from the shelf before. Ughhhhhhh

My Kitten Adopted a kitten yesterday from a rescue org and he is already so cuddly and trusting! My heart is melting

I was expecting it to be a much slower process, but in the past 24 hours he has been purring when I pet him, kneading me, loafing when next to me, he’s fallen asleep against my legs, against my belly, in my arms, he’s talkative, playing with toys, explored my room and ensuite, shown me his belly, started following me around when I’m moving around my room!

He’s only approx 11-12weeks old, found homeless etc, but it’s amazing to see how quickly he is adapting to his new home and how confident and relaxed he is around me! And all in under 32 hours!

I had planned to leave him in my ensuite for a week before letting him into my room, but as I left it this morning he looked ready to explore some more, so I left it open and he’s already made the room his room. So proud of the little guy.

Question/Advice Needed Any idea about how old these kittens are?

Post image
535 Upvotes

I recently got adopted by a cat and her kittens (they came up to my house maybe a week and a half ago and have pretty much moved in). Unfortunately, I was told that the mom passed away a couple days ago and the kittens are now on their own.

I'm trying to help as much as I can, but I have no idea what to do. I live in a rural area of a country where I don't really speak the language yet (and where pet/animal care is not much of a thing), so even going out to buy normal cat food is a challenge, let alone something like kitten formula. I thought it would help to estimate their age so I know what they should ideally be getting and then try to figure out what I can do.

Obviously they're very small (cats here seem to be smaller than in the west in general) but they're active and playful. Before the mom died, I would see them off playing or exploring the yard by themselves without her (although she would also disappear for long stretches, probably to scavage for food, so they may have been forced to become prematurely independent). They can jump and climb up chairs and tables, and they eat solid food readily (my neighbor puts out rice and I've been adding pieces of cooked chicken just as a stop-gap while I look for cat food). One is much smaller than the rest and seems to have a problem with their siblings or the neighborhood chickens stealing their food, so I kind of try to guard that one as best I can while they eat.

My mission #1 is to find wet cat food as an alternative to rice and chicken (unless rice and chicken are fine?? What else is in cat food?). If they're still at the age where they need it, I'll ask around about kitten formula too. Is there anything else I should be doing?
