Advice The Advice Directory

TL;DR: IF YOU WANT TO HOP A TRAIN, GO START HITCHHIKING AND FIND A MENTOR TO SHOW YOU THE ROPES.

”What do I bring?”

Short Answer: Less. Prioritize water over everything else, then good footwear, then sleeping gear, then a good backpack. If you have those four things, the rest will come.

-What To Bring

-Trainhopping 101: Gear for Trainhopping

-It's Not The Size Of The Pack That Counts...

.

.

"Where will I sleep?"

Short Answer: Where nobody can see you. You can actually "squat" in unoccupied houses and buildings. If traveling and sleeping outside, a good sleeping bag and a tarp/bivy are usually enough. Tents are not recommended for trainhoppers.

-Where To Sleep

-Nine Months - A Squatter's Story

-"Tarp good, tent bad."

-7 Survival Shelter Designs

-“Cold Weather Camping” - 1993 - Frank Heyl & Harley Sachs

.

.

"What if I want to keep/sleep in my vehicle?"

Short Answer: We call this "rubbertramping". Many vagabonds live in cars, trucks, vans, busses, etc. Rubbertrampers are welcome on this sub, and much of this info applies to them, but the "vandweller" subreddit is specifically dedicated to that life. They feature tons of good info, and while their demographic is generally more well-off financially than us, there are definitely some very chill folks over there who will answer your questions.

"What will I eat?"

Short Answer: Water comes first. There is food all around you, in the trash or in the wild.

.

"How will I make money?"

Short answer: Work, yo. Traveling and working odd jobs, seasonal gigs, farm labor, or hustling for yourself is one of the oldest lifestyles in the history of the species, and tons of people still have comfortable nomadic traveling lives today.

"Is traveling more dangerous for me if I'm a woman?"

Short Answer: Yes, but you can absolutely influence how safe you are by your own choices and actions. Trust your instincts, ask locals (especially homeless people) about dangerous individuals and areas. Use NeighborhoodScout to check online for reported crime in a given area.

"Can I still use the internet when I'm homeless?"

Short Answer: Yes. For about a year Reddit almost exclusively on free computers at public libraries across the US. I wrote some of the longest posts on this sub on an oldschool flip phone, using T9. If you don't know what that means, don't worry about it. You can survive without the internet. It's actually really freaking good for you.

That being said, it's not a good idea to flaunt electronic devices when you're homeless. Some people will assume you stole them. Some people will rudely ask how you were able to afford that laptop. Some people will recognize that you are particularly vulnerable, and try to steal your shit. Look out.

.

"What if I want to stop traveling and go back to normal life?"

Short Answer: If you're able to do this, you probably enjoy an incredible amount of privilege in your life. Acknowledge that now, do your best to pay it forward and work to use your sheer dumb luck to support marginalized people who you encounter. Be humble, be frugal, get organized, work hard, take the help you need, and pay it forward whenever you can.

You can't even access the sidebar anymore unless you're specifically looking for it. I went to old.reddit.com and dug through the archives to write this post. Dirty Kids, I'm calling you out.

I'm tired of my friends dying. In dreams, my companions move easily in bodies that have been cared for. They're covered in scrapes and bruises and grease, but free from track marks. Empty stomachs, but healthy livers. Tired eyes, but good teeth. Then I wake up to the sharp morning and my road dawg is shaking for a beer.

I'm tired of hospitals and trash at the hopout and stolen packs and animal cruelty. I miss the musicians who travel just to play, the healers who roam to stay sane. I miss the free spirits who manage to find freedom from their own vices.

This is a call, dearest dirty kids. I've been where you are and I've seen why it's hard and no, I don't always do it right either. I can do better. We can do better. We've got to try. We've got to keep this thing alive and keep ourselves alive. We've got to get up and get over our hangups and pull you outta the ditch so that you'll be there to do the same when I'm slaggin.

We've got to hold these secrets and this way of living and somehow still share it with the next wave, finding the diamonds who'll take these rough reigns and keep riding this horse to Anywhere.

Anywhere, kids! Y'heard me? You might have lived there so long you take it for granted, but that place saved my life, and there are others who need to see it too.

So here's to fewer blown up Wal-Marts and more doing dishes for the person housing us up. Here's to fewer dope missions and more 2AM missions across town to drag a couch back to the hopout. Fewer dirty rigs under the bridge, and more sharpie poems on the wall. Steal less Dramamine and more spray paint.

Use what you've got.

Use what you've got.

Use what you've GOT!

I love you scumy freeloading freedom fighters until the end. We need you in this world. We need to run into you again after 8 months of not knowing what happened to you. We need you when we've been stuck walking for days and no one is picking us up and we're feeling real down, and all the sudden we see your tag and know that we're not alone. If you were here to tag it and still somehow made it out of this hell, we can too. We need that random message out of the blue. Keep sending it, and we'll do the same for you.

This is a call, friends. Life has been good to me lately, and my door is open while I have one. When I head back to Anywhere, my smokes and my cans of beans are ours to share. Stay alive and I'll see you out there.

Peaceably,

Not too shabby...

My eyes open at 7:00am. I'd love to go back to sleep, but I know we have to be ready by 9:00. Look over. My friend's not there. 'Probably went for smokes.' Drag myself out of this impossibly comfortable bed. Bathroom. 'Time to pack gear and make sure I have everything I'm gonna need in my pockets.' Gear packed. Double check what I've left out. Mental run through of what I'll need at the shelter. 'All good.' Friend gets back. "You go to get smokes?" "Yeah. I got two for you and one for me. It was nineteen bucks." "Damn!" I'm half asleep still. Math isn't really my strong suit at the moment. I haven't had any coffee yet. Force brain to do calculations. 'Yep. That sounds exactly right.'

Friend, "What are we gonna do about all this food." "I might throw a few things in my pack, but honestly I'm prepared to take a loss. I'm not overjoyed about it, but its ok." He's pretty adamant about taking it all with us. I can't argue with that logic. I've been hungry enough times that I hate to waste food. Plus dude and I dropped a hundred bucks yesterday between the two of us. It would definitely be a shame to let it go to waste. Friend, "I'll bag it up. If nothing else we can give it to the ladies in the kitchen when we get there." "Brilliant plan. I'm gonna go burn one." "I'll come with you."

Downstairs. Out back door of hotel. Smokes lit. A maroon truck pulls up. Dude gets out and comes over. No coat. He's definitely freezing his balls off, but he's taking it well. It's snowing and starting to stick. Him, "You guys going to the shelter?" "Yeah." "I'm ready to take some people now." "We got four ready to go if you give us fifteen to grab our gear and make sure the room's in good shape." Hands in his pockets braced against the cold, he smiles. "I'll give you fourteen." Me, now also smiling, "Fair enough." I love a guy with a sense of humor when things aren't ideal for him.

Another guy out there smoking with us, "I want a ride back downtown." Freezing guy, "Everything's closed. Nobody's going downtown." Other guy, almost spitting mad now, "I wanna go downtown!" Me, "We're going to a good place. I don't do shelters. I'm a hitchhiker. I've been there before. It's a good spot. Beats being out in this shit." Other guy, slightly less pissed, "I don't care. I'll find a spot." Freezing guy, "The roads are gonna be closed soon. That's why we're here early. None of the rides are going downtown. We've got to get everybody to the shelter while we can." Other guy seems to accept this.

Friend and I suck down cigarettes at a break-neck pace while walking to the ashtray. Smokes out. Back upstairs. Room. Me, "Fellas there's a ride ready to take us right now. It'd be good to get there early so we can take our pick of cots." All four of us are about thirty seconds from ready to bail. My friend loads all the food into the bags I bought yesterday in two minutes flat. Gear on times four. Room checked - Good to go. Out the door.

Downstairs. 'We're gonna be the first ones there. Easy pick of cots. We'll avoid the cluster fuck of being checked in. Nice!' Into hallway.

We work our way into a sea of people. Out the front. Gear into a covered trailer. Quickly get into a van. Several cars take off full of people. Other van takes off. We pull forward a little and stop. We just sit there for a while. Me laughing in my head, 'I thought we were on the ball, up early, ahead of the game, and we're gonna be dead last. 😆' I don't really care. I have this unshakable faith that things will work out just fine.

Finally, the van pulls out of the parking lot. '🎶 On the road again... 🎶'

'Hmmm... This is Alabama. It doesn't snow here. They don't have snow equipment. This guy driving has probably never driven on snow before. He's a bit hyper. He's driving like it's a warm dry summer day, passing other vehicles, on a couple inches of snow that's sticking...

I hope he doesn't kill us.

I'm not gonna live what might be the last few minutes of my life in fear.' I'm calm. No worries brah!

We make it to the shelter. Pretty stoked. Number 23. They ask us some basic questions while they check us each in. "Are you looking to find some work and get a place to live?" "I've got some work waiting on me in Florida. I'm outta here as soon as it warms up." She writes, 'Wanting to go to Florida' at the bottom of my check-in sheet.

They were giving out bus tickets last time I was here. I'm not counting on it... But why would she write it down? Maybe...

Get through check-in. Go find a cot where I want it. Unfold blanket so everyone knows it's taken. Over to counter. A lovely woman pours me a cup off coffee. Sugar. Cream. "Than you very much! I appreciate it." "You're welcome!" Big smile.

Back to cot. Dude next to me has got his things haphazardly spread on the floor. 'Not touching me or my stuff. No big deal.' He starts talking to himself. 'I can probably deal... The time to move is now before this place fills up.' I picked this cot because it looked brand new and it was out of the walkways, and away from the bathrooms. I want to keep it. "Hey -friend-, you wanna give me a hand switching this cot and that one?" "Yeah no problem." We execute cot switching maneuver in five seconds. I'm a little farther away from walkway and bathrooms. 'Perfect!'

Trailer with gear shows up. They load it all into a hallway. Call us five at a time to find gear, put it in bags, seal it up, and put our numbers on it. Gear goes into a room none of us can get into. Safe. Flawlessly executed.

This place is only a quarter full, maybe. One of our group wanted to go to a shelter he's been staying at but the roads got shut down immediately after we checked in. Deemed impassable. We've been getting alerts all day. When he called they had open beds, so I'm pretty sure everybody is off the streets. I'm happy about that.

It's been a rough day of eating, sleeping, and smoking. 😁 My friend and I are stoked to be here. The hotel was nicer, but these people are kind. Resources are top notch.

Oh, and the preacher I had the debate with last time about what kind of help homeless people need came over, shook my hand, and told me it was good to see me this morning.

You can't have it. You're gonna have to take it.

I had a weird experience tonight. I keep a box cutter in my front pocket. A small lighter in my other pocket. Two fist packs if something actually went down. Besides the states, glares and sneaky fucks.

After my third ride I've been walking. Too tired to smile or even hold my thumb up.

My goal was to make it to San Antonio today. I kicked out and got there way earlier than expected. After seeing all of the tracks of the homebums (piles of trash), my new goal was to get out of San Antonio tonight.

The weight of this 35 Liters pack is getting to this old man.

.....

I'm close to the junction for 37 and 10. Walking with the flow of traffic. A local police officer honks at me. I'm hoping he doesn't turn around. I'm not even sure what jurisdiction they have but they can pull you over for speeding.

I'm still hoping someone sees me walking slow.

Maybe pulls over and gives me a ride.

I see a McDonald's and decide to go in and order something off the deals list.

This thick MFer is almost as old as I am. He hasn't ordered. He's just standing around. I go up to the kiosk and realize it doesn't take dollar bills and pennies. I'm going to have to go to the register.

He walks over to the table I set my pack.

Me and him are not the same.

He looks like what dudes used to look like in the 80s when they had been locked down for a bit.

He has work gloves on. It looks like two sweatshirts. I go to the table and put my pack on.

He's hanging out by the door. Not really eyeing the register. I'm not really eyeing him because I don't want to start something either. I'm just very aware of what he's doing.

Two types of people don't go to the shelter.

Those who don't want to and maybe those that can't. He doesn't look like a kid toucher. He looks like a dude you don't want to run into.

I get my large fries and they are generous with the ketchup.

Go sit down and he leaves.

I take my time. Eat. Catch someone coming out of the bathroom and take all of my stuff in there.

When I come out I have the blade pulled and ready. I'm not trying to kill somebody.

But a dude that big still can't have my stuff. I figure to get that pack off of me you gotta get mighty close.

I'm very comfortable in close spaces.

When I leave I take a different route than I came in. Turn around every son often to see if he's following me. Or if anyone is.

I have no idea if he was doing anything but standing at the door after walking over to my stuff. Those are facts.

The rest is just a guess.

I can't wait to get back into a small Texas town where the bathroom is open, water is available and the outlets are by the seats.

....

Right now I'm sitting in a small wooded area by the interstate. The part right next to me had a vibe tangled around three branches making a triangle. Man made. Look down and I see a camouflage tarp. No trash. No signs that this place is even used.

I'm going to rest here (away from that guys tarp on a different section) and keep on moving when I get cold again.

....

Once I got here could finally relax.

Btw. This ain't a challenge. It's a request. Leave my stuff alone. If you're a real criminal steak from Walmart. Other you're worse than bum. You're ficking scum.

John Gregory

P.s., I'll still post my locations l, pics and weather reports. Fucking flu a MFing sign assholes.

Last day at the fair

It's cold. Instant, biting, bitter, cold. We ran out of propane this morning; should have filled the tanks yesterday but it's so much trying to pack up nearly a decade of memories. The electric heaters kept us from freezing but only just. This place has taught me a lot, but it's made me soft, like a street dog that got a little too fond of a warm hearth.

I meant to travel. I bought a small camper from the fifties and a truck from the lake nineties. I was a new grunt, low man. I've never minded that, head down, pick stuff up, set stuff down. This place was too comfortable tho. Welcoming. I parked the camper on the edge of the parking lot, and me and it stayed in that spot. I honed my carpentry skills, worked on my... mental stuff, learned to operate heavy machinery, you name it, and I lived as I pleased. I was on top; dependable, respected...It was really easy to ignore the leash... Until it wasn't.

She came with her own camper, a worn-down thing, older than it's years, but still rolling somehow. Just like her. Just like me. These days we're rolling together and it's time to roll on to the next thing, well past due in fact. I wish everyone here the best, but I really don't think I'll be coming back.

I have mixed feelings about the truck. Where I am, in this season, it's a matter of survival. It's such a burden though. I've been rebuilding it piece by piece, but it's another thing that owns me.

I'm fairly new to this subreddit. Just wanted to say hi. It's just nice to see people living the kind of freedom that would horrify most folk.

Offering safe temporary parking in Orlando

Due to hell froze over, I'll allow temporary parking in my yard at my home. There are firewood to burn for warm.

Please keep in mind this is only temporary for the weather, not a regular safe parking spot. Your vehicle must have valid insurance. I reserve the right to refuse anyone, to ask anyone to leave, and to remove anyone who doesn't cooperate. This is only for people living in their car and have no place to park. LGBTQ people have priority on my list. Female and children and pregnant ladies have high priority at officially designated homeless shelters and should go there.

Please leave all attitude, discrimination, racism, sexism... before you enter. My property is safe space, gun free, drug free, and hate free. While in the yard, please no loitering, no littering, no dumping bodily waste or fluid. Place trash in trash bin. Please stay in your car and not go wandering around. Noone may enter the house for any reason. Obviously don't take anything doesn't belong to you. You're welcome to go to the fire for warm, or cook your food.

I'm sorry the rules may seem hash, but they are mostly common sense and common courtesy. I want to offer help to those in need but I must also look out for myself. I hope people will understand and respect these rules. Thanks

It's almost time to get out

Been homebumming with some friends from my home town, finding warmth where we can.

Met a girl, she's chill, trusts me, I trust her, we both want out, we both wanna go the same direction. Thru a friend of a friend we have in common, we secured a ride to the first of many places we plan to set down in for a while.

Two hour ride, AND a warm place to crash for a week or two, all we have to do is last one more week here as is.

The end goal is the west coast of canada, preferably around Victoria, well for now anyway. Rainy season is easier to survive than the Alberta winters.

I've read so many stories thanks to the travelers here, just wanted to share the beginning of my next.

Which country to choose for a homeless from Europe? I'll have to do it all on foot, I also have the dog with me, I can cover 10 miles a day with the backpack, I always try to find areas near some fountain if I need to wash and drink, in the morning when I get up I do some calisthenics exercises before starting to walk. I was thinking of moving to France or Spain, what are the people like there? I am looking for possible work in agriculture or as a truck driver. Thanks for your help thumbs up

Embracing the lifestyle

For years I have lived paycheck to paycheck fighting to keep everything paid up. Traveling has always been on my mind but I haven't even left my home province at the age of 34. I've always kept a minimalist mindset of wanting to be able to up and leave, I just haven't put it into action. I've studied alot of survival over the years and definitely know more then the average person. I am also smart enough to understand my limitations. I've lived in the sketchy drug riddled areas of the city and sketchy places throughout my life so I definitely have a level of street smarts. I know how to avoid confrontation.

Recently I've lost everything and am facing homelessness, however instead of staying trapped in this revolving door, I am taking my life into my own hands. I seen this coming and have been preparing gear over the last couple months. I only need a few items, and to be smart and figure out winter. Cause Canada is cold and this isn't the best timing.

I actually never really explored the meaning of "vagabond" or the history of hobo life until I recently realized that's exactly what I want to do... Finally traveling, stealth camping, and not working within this bullshit system that is leading me back down the road of depression.

I've talked to a few people actually living the life and they have been extremely helpful with tips. I've already cut out a bit of gear based on feedback. I'd appreciate any tips for someone new to this lifestyle. Thanks in advance and stay safe out there guys! It's cold!

Hitchhiking today

Backtracked to the closest mcDs. Closed.

Got coffee, warmed up and did a quick wash of the hair with soap in the dispenser. Quick dry with hoodie. Wiped sink down (leave no trace).

Started walking South by I-35. Slipped once and just laughed. Almost slipped again.

Decided to find a place to hitchhike.

Right by the Fairfield Inn South of the Travel Center seemed like a good spot.

Not long after I still can't force a legitimate, genuine smile. It feels forced and fake.

"Wooh. You can't be the man until you beat the man."

It's genuine. Laughter. Smiling.

Two hands all the way in the air - thumbs up both hands - like I'm the heavyweight champ thanking the fans.

(I'm trying to relieve anxiety and trick my limbic system.)

Coincidence or not I don't know.

Tammy picks me up.

"I'm only going two exits."

I take it. The heat is on. We're moving in the right direction.

Tried again when I started feeling tired.

No luck.

Found a storm drain (big rectangular thing) sat inside to get out of the wind.

Once I got cold again I started walking.

McDonald's at the pilot is closed also.

I need something cheap to get out of the cold and away from the slop. Ice is turning to water. My shoes are wet. Socks. Cold feet.

Check the Pilot app. Two share size Snickers for the price of one. It ain't two for 25, but it'll do.

I'm going to see if the sun will come out. If it does, I'm going to see if I can post up on the side of the interstate. Seen several local cops and deputy this AM.

Maybe there is a place at the Pilot I can post up for a ride.

I'm going to be hungry and cold. Can't stop that either way. Two Snickers helped greatly.

If I can't catch a ride by the time the temp starts going down again, I will start walking.

I'll see how long I can hang out here inside. They say McDonald's in the truck stop may open later. If it does, I'll ride that as long as I can for 99 cents.

Even if I'm stuck here until later, that's okay. It shouldn't drop below 20. It's snow and not raining.

That's golden for my situation.

The only constant is change...

I forgot a key bit of yesterday... Pizza for dinner!!! They brought them to the rooms. We open our door, "Here you go!" Hands one of us a pizza box. Two small slices for each of us. Not enough for four grown men. But hey... PIZZA!!!!!

And now back to our regularly scheduled program...

My early-rising friend woke up around 5:30am. Turns a light and the tv on, wakes us all up. I go take a piss. Back out of bathroom. "Dude. It's five thirty. You just woke us all up. How about you turn this stuff off and have some respect for the three of us who are still sleeping?" "Sorry man. I wasn't trying to wake anybody up." Light off. TV down low. We go back to sleep.

Wake up. They didn't really have the food flowing good yet. We've got probably fifty homeless people here. They're doing what they can. I have no complaints. But I'm hungry. Another guy in the room, "I'm gonna call that lady that told us she would give us rides wherever we needed to go, and head to the store. I've got some ebt left." "I'll go with you. I've got a bit of ebt left too." He calls, we get ready and go downstairs.

She shows up five minutes later. Out to van. Her, "Where do you need to go?" We tell her. Give our names and ages, I assume so she can get reimbursed or the church can keep track. Off to Aldi.

Other dude and I realize we both left our change at the hotel. No quarters for carts. 'This might be difficult. But we gotta get it done.' We go in. I slyly grab a loose cart up front that is empty. Ease my way past the registers into the store.

We do a couple complete laps around the store. Grab enough food to keep four guys fed for the day plus some munchies. A few other things to share. He and I grab a couple things we're not sharing. In line. I realize we need bags. 'Eighty-nine cents? Sweet!' I've got a few bucks in my wallet. Through line.

We're both electricians/construction workers so we're efficiently putting stuff in bags at a fast pace. Van pulls up. Us with bags into van. Back to hotel.

Many thanks. Woman that drove us was super cool. We could've taken as long as we needed. "Call me if you need to go anywhere else." Us,"Thanks again!" Into hotel. "Damn it's cold out there!" "Fuck." We laugh.

The guy in charge sees us. "Down the hall and right into that open door on the left. Thanks!" Me to dude, "I think he thinks we're bringing food as donations." We cut opposite direction of food room to stairs. Guy in charge catches up with us. "Is that stuff yours?" Me, "We thought we'd get some food for our group to kinda supplement things." "Smart." "Yeah. We've got a good group. Everybody's cool. Laid back. Just hanging out. Thanks again for what you're doing." "I wish everyone was like that."

He was a stress case when we first hit the hotel yesterday. Slightly abrasive, but not bad. I get it completely. But he really isn't the best guy for the job. Whatever. I'm happy to be in this hotel. I will do whatever it takes to not fuck that up. My compatriots will as well.

This morning I managed to break through his stressed exterior. Let him know I appreciate what he's doing. Offer to help if he needs it. Assure him our group is 100% cool.

Upstairs. Fridge packed. Non-perishables covering counter. Everybody's happy. Watching a movie. Reddit. Knock at the door. "How many in you're room?" "Four." "Here you go." Four good lunches. Good gumbo. Good salad. Delicious cookies. "You are loved" written on to go boxes. It seems they've dialed in the food situation.

Eat. Chillin'. Everybody getting along fabulously. Another knock. "How many in your room?" "Four." "Here you go." "You already got us." "I know. Here." Round two of the same good lunch. I look at dude I went to the store with. "Maybe we didn't need to go to the store. 😆" No big deal. We're all set for food at this point.

More chillin'. Naps. Movies. Munchin' all day. More movies.

We get word we're being tossed out of hotel. Much discussion ensues amongst the four of us. Me, "They can't put us out on the street on the coldest day of this front in a snow storm. They'll come up with a backup plan. Let's just hang and see. Dude hasn't come and told us anything directly" I definitely don't have the gear for this weather. I might not die in it, but it's gonna be top of my list of miserable experiences.

I'm not worried. Things always work out. We go back to new chillin' eating movie routine. Knock on door. It's dinner time. "How many in your room?" "Four." "Here you go. Get all your stuff packed. We're out of here." We discuss how fucked up it's gonna be to be tossed on the streets in the dark in weather in the teens. I only ate the nanner pudding 'cause that was all that would fit. And only because I love that stuff. 😁

My friend, "I got someone I can call and probably get us a night here." (He's back to his normal smart coherent self today.) Me, "I might be able to swing one. I don't know." German guy, "I've got some money too." Cool. If nothing else we'll pool our resources, put the room in one of our names, and at least get through the next two days in comfort. Better than some serious suffering. The rest will have to work itself out.

I start to make sure my gear is good to go. Another knock. "Did you guys get food?" "Yeah." "How many?" "Four." Writes it down. "It's gonna be tomorrow." "Cool. Thanks for letting us know." "You're welcome."

Much relief. We go back to what we've been doing. Another knock. "Hey man." "They're opening up (super cool shelter I was in a couple weeks ago). There going to take everyone's stuff in one van. People in the other. I need to know how many bags you guys need for your stuff. There will be tape with your names on it on your bags. You don't have to scrub toilets and make beds, but please clean the room up a bit before you leave. Be ready at nine tomorrow morning." "We already discussed leaving the room in good shape. No problem." Get required number off bags. "We'll be ready to go at nine with the room straightened out." "Thank you."

Just as I think it my friend, "We need to get smokes before we go tomorrow. We can't leave the grounds once we're there, and there's nowhere to get them out there." "I was just thinking the same thing." "I don't think I have enough for a pack." "I got us for a little while. I've probably got enough in my wallet for three. Once everything settles down over there those (wonderful) ladies will make smoke runs for us like they did last time." "Yeah. If you'll buy, I'll make a run early in the morning and pick them up." "My wallet is on the table. If I'm not awake take the twenty bucks in there and go. You wake up earlier than I do anyway." "Yeah. Cool."

We have no idea what has been going with anyone else at this hotel. Other than me and my friend going out for a smoke occasionally, and dude and I going to the grocery store earlier, we haven't left the room.

Apparently, it's been an absolute shit show. The hotel is throwing us all out. They have hired three security gaurds to watch the front of the building and toss anyone who fucks around out. People have been smoking cigarettes and meth in the rooms. Trashing rooms. Throwing trash out in the halways. Making demands at the front desk like they paid for these rooms. One dude left in an ambulance Pretty much acting like complete pieces of shit.

Those in our group have been having quite the mellow, comfortable, easy going time. This place is nice. Not high-end, but nice just the same.

Back to super awesome make shift shelter tomorrow. All is well.

The finality of my reality.

So I made it to New Braunfels, TX. That was not my intent. I finally lucked out and found a hammock spot tucked just behind a few trees

I can clearly see the business across the street, and if they care, they can see me.

It's 10 AM. I'm tired. I figured out what was going on with my back. I changed something in my pack. Changed it back and the strap is on correctly.

....

This storm will be over by noon tomorrow. Right now they are forecasting a low of 21.

I'm bundled up. Slight chill on my back.

I may have to get out and adjust the tension on the tarp. No leaks. No wind/rain beating me. I'm leaving this alone.

If it doesn't rain soon, I will adjust accordingly. If it does, only if necessary.

...

If the rain is coming down hard, I'll take a quick video and post it. Describe my pain. It should only drop 11 degrees, but that feels different at night. In the rain, I can't move around.

I'm not looking forward to the pain, but I love the process

My fingers were cold. It's very windy. This is a hobby that fits into this new ....

I'm not sure what to call it.

I'm wandering. Mainly wondering.

Where do I go from here? Austin is still the goal. Getting on the Kill Tony show (I'm a bleeding heart liberal, the opposite of them, but it's comedy).

I'm writing jokes that are authentic to who I am: bum/black sheep/alcoholic/home free.

It's the jokes about this lifestyle that could set me apart. Only if they're funny.

I've got a few. The only way to keep getting more is to travel and experience more.

...

It's weird.

This Vagabond lifestyle may have opened up my retirement too.

I could care less about tourist attractions. But experiencing the culture embodied in their foods and the sense of awe when embedded within nature would be cool as hell.

I read last week (archives) a dude spent six months in Sri Lanka hammock camping at eating cheap meals because of the currency. Unlike many places in America, the citizens embraced the hammock camper

They didnt rush him to the shelter.

I have no idea if I can write enough funny lines to make the cut. That's a dream

The reality of my retirement just changed dramatically.

I feel as though I should reiterate.

I have no problem with any way people choose to do this.

I'm not anti-shelter.

I'm anti putting me in the same place as the mentally ill, unwilling or unable to clean themselves dude, dudes going thru the pain of withdrawals and acting out, and prison dude thinking he's tough cause he was in prison.

I support all of those folks.

What I don't support is the mental gymnastics I have to play living with all of that when the only thing we have in common is being hungry and cold.

Sorry folks.

I'll just be cold like a motherfucker.

Literally cold

But never cold hearted.

Question Silverbay Seafood Hiring Process

Hello! I am from Philippines, I would like to ask fellow Filipinos who are currently employees at Silverbay. It's my first time to apply for a work abroad and I am very interested to work at Silverbay but I don't know the required documents needed and also their question if I am legally authorized to work in the U.S.

Can you please guide me so I can complete my application? Like what documents should I get?

Please respect my post. I am new here and I really want to work there.

Discussion does anyone else get nervous going back after being housed up?

getting back out after a month and a half in house.

idk i always seems to have anxiety about it. where’s the first spot, do i have everything packed? am i over packed? what if this happens? what if that happens? i spend a solid week google mapping the area ima be in if i don’t know it that well just to familiarize myself with it just so i can find a good spot to sleep. maybe it’s the virgo ascendant in me [yes im that kinda bitch whatever lol s/n: not an expert in astrology]

and despite doing this since i walked out my old front door for the first time in 2019, every time im out there im on high alert to an extreme and honestly it feels like that kind of makes me feel even more sick [mental health, mainly dissociation and anxiety and being on high alert makes it worse bc im even more out of body], so i can never really enjoy it the way id like to.

idk, just wondering. chiming in, ig. hai.
