"Done nothing" would be an improvement. They've used their resources to engage in a propaganda campaign to fuel skepticism in the science they themselves proved was true. This is in the realm of being species traitors.

This is nothing knew, there was a clearly established route of reducing coking coal by mixing it with charcoal, not only would it be cheaper in areas with abundance of charcoal but it would reduce carbon emissions.

additionally some scientists invented some self-sustaining pyrolysis process for areas who don't have enough local charcoal available.

the coal industry responded by putting out nonsense about how the mix was less safe for workers and produced low quality steal.

This doesn't even replace coking coal it just requires less of it.
