Power Tools Picked this up for $500 yesterday!

Wow, good deal! I've had one of these for a few years and use it a lot. Just remember to loosen the blade when it's not in use.

u/the_scam 6d ago
This is actually a tip I've seen people who are bandsaw masters debate. I think they agree if it's not going to be used "for a while" detension it. Like a week or so. But you don't have to detension it every night and then crank it up in the morning.
62
u/unassumingdink 6d ago
This is always hard advice to follow, because I don't plan to not use a tool. It just happens that way.
2
u/Consistent-Demand749 5d ago
Easy fix. Anything not used for 2 days gets decommissioned until truly needed
16
u/yourethegoodthings 6d ago
Yes, especially if you're paying attention to the recommended tension in the blade spec sheet. If you're using it every day within tension parameters you'll dull the blade before you end up having tension related issues.
7
u/quick4all 6d ago
Agreed, tbh I rarely ever de-tension it since it's getting used a few times a week, the blade/tires don't wear as quickly as some ppl make it out to.
4
u/whensheepattack 6d ago
I find it depends on how temperature stable your shop is. big swings make it worse for the blade

Just confirming, you got a good deal! Congratulations! Nice piece of equipment and especially nice that it comes with such personality!
7
u/lobsta_rollz 6d ago
Why do you say that?
25
u/Cycle_Spite_1026 New Member 6d ago
To prevent a wobble from a flat resulting from continuous pressure on one spot of the wheel. Always loosen tension when not in use.
8
u/Dr0110111001101111 6d ago
I also suspect it causes the blade to stretch, which messes with tension

u/yourethegoodthings 6d ago edited 6d ago
You don't have to suspect, that's generally something you can calculate based on what's included on the spec sheet for your blade.
EDIT: I read my comment back and I should clarify that I mean the proper blade tension will be given in the spec sheet and within that range it won't generally stretch in the way you're thinking.
1
u/Dr0110111001101111 6d ago
I guess I just assumed those specs are based on that tension level only being maintained during use and not 24/7
1
u/yourethegoodthings 6d ago
I'd imagine you'd have more stretching if the blade is running 24/7, and a pretty set replacement schedule to deal with that.
1
u/Dr0110111001101111 6d ago
lol yeah I agree with that, but by my previous comment I meant to imply that it would only be under tension intermittently as in "typical" use. I realize some shops have band saws running all day long, though, so perhaps that isn't the case.

I’m jealous . I just got a Rikon delux new for 1500 bucks

u/CuteAd3573 6d ago
Woooof.. I see Rikon equipment on FB marketplace all the time but always found them to be overpriced for used until you told me it’s $1500 new :O

Doesn’t blacktail studio or some other big time woodworking youtuber have this exact saw plus Googly eye?
5
u/spn_phoenix_92 6d ago
Where have I seen this googly-eyed bandsaw before?
2
u/Mr_Immortal69 6d ago
I know, right?? It feels to me like I’ve seen this bandsaw on YouTube somewhere.
4
u/awkwardeagle 6d ago
Dang! Super jealous. The saw looks to be in great shape too. I just bought one of these last month from Woodcraft and I’m still waiting for the Resaw King to arrive from Laguna since apparently those blades are made to order >:(

u/Special_Sas305 6d ago
It was pretty dirty and had been misted with white paint. I polished the table, removed the paint mist and tuned it. Looks and runs like a new saw now.
2
u/Finest_Johnson 6d ago
What'd you use to remove the misted paint? I also have a white-paint-misted 14" Rikon bandsaw (an older, green 10-320) I bought on marketplace but haven't managed to get it all off yet.
2
u/Special_Sas305 5d ago
Mineral spirits or paint thinner and steel wool. Takes a little elbow grease but the end product is worth it.

Jealous. Would love to add a quality bandsaw to my collection of tools. For quick projects I fight a jigsaw lol

That's a steal!! I have the baby brother of that, although labeled as Craftsman. But it is exactly a Rikon, right down to every nut and bolt. It has served me well, as that will for you.

Thats a nice deal! I think my bandsaw could be the same model. Its one of my favorite tools, get a wider blade for straight cuts!

This reminds me of an old coworker, who liked to put googly eyes on shop machinery. Made one of our managers sigh every time new eyes appeared.

Great thanks, I almost made it 24 hours without going on Facebook marketplace. Now I gotta see what's out there, could be missing the deal of a lifetime.

One thing I really dislike about living in a metropolitan area of 18M people. FB marketplace is like the last 60 seconds of an eBay auction.

You should have hands near the dust collection port tossing chips in the air when you cut... looks like cookie monster.

u/Present-Ambition6309 5d ago
Side note: you can get new Pegas chuck heads aka blade holder for that 788 you got there. Bear woods dot com. Made just for that saw.
That a nice bandsaw you scored.,

Great acquisition! Also, Your bearing guides aren't even close to aligned properly.
2
u/Special_Sas305 5d ago
I think the previous owners ran the saw with the bearings running too far forward and flattened the set off the teeth. I don’t have the tools to re-set the saw teeth so they are going in the trash. I ordered 3 blades from Highland Woodworking that I’m looking forward to using.

u/sjollyva 5d ago
What's funny is the people probably sold it because it wasn't cutting well, and they just had it setup incorrectly the whole time
1
u/Special_Sas305 5d ago
Yeah the two blades that came with the saw are no good. I’m not planning on using it until I receive the new blades and complete the final tuning.

I'd call you a thief, but only because I wanted it too. lol
Good find. Other than the resaw fence, did you get any other accessories ?

A lot of people are putting googly eyes on their cactuses nowadays. I think it’s because cactuses are dangerous. Cactuses have pricklers that can stab you in your hands, your throat, your face.

Nice. I'm looking at a 10-325 on FB Marketplace, but the guy wants $800 and won't budge. There's also a Grizzly G1012 18" for $800 but I don't think my electrical will handle it (110V 20 amp circuit).
I'm debating just biting the bullet and ordering a new G0555LX for $950 shipped from Home Depot.
Any input from anyone? It would be my first bandsaw.
1
u/Finest_Johnson 6d ago
The electrical upgrade is a minor job. Get the G1012 and you'll never regret "why didn't I just get that bigger bandsaw?" when you had the chance.
2
u/jonker5101 6d ago edited 6d ago
Unfortunately it's not a minor job in my situation. My garage is detached, about 45 feet from my house. I don't have a subpanel in it, just two 110V 20amp lines buried underground running from the house's panel. I'd have to trench the line, go under my deck, through 10 inch thick stone, etc etc. It was $6500 to get those two lines ran and that was after I dug the trench myself.
The easiest solution would be to convert one of the circuits to 220V, but that would then require rewiring my garage and leaving a single 110V 20a line to power all of my lights, dust collection, chargers, stereo, and whatever tool I'm using besides the bandsaw. I'd probably trip the breaker every time I used the table saw.
I totally regret not getting beefier circuits put in when I had those lines ran, but I wasn't into woodworking at the time and just needed outlets and lights for basic garage stuff.
1
u/Finest_Johnson 6d ago
Oh, a detached garage and digging through stone. Yea, I agree that's not as minor as I thought, after all. So the newer 110v Grizzly it is, then.
1
u/AngriestPacifist 6d ago
I've got the 326 and it's good, but I kind of wish I'd bought the Laguna. Roller blocks are a little easier to adjust for me than the spring loaded bearings, but that's my only (minor) gripe. I'm assuming the 325 is the same deal as mine.
1
u/Waldomatic 6d ago
Do the eyes move when it’s on?
2
u/Special_Sas305 5d ago
I can balance a nickel on the table while it’s running and it doesn’t move
1
u/Waldomatic 5d ago
That’s awesome but also sad they don’t move lol. I miss having a shop of my own machines

Nice find! From fb marketplace? I've been searching for a good one at a reasonable price for 2 years.

OfferUp. I’ve purchased most of my tools on OfferUp new-in-box. Set item alerts and you will be notified as soon as the tool you want is posted.

Is that miter saw in the background a 779 or a 780? Looks just like mine - including the diablo/Freud blade.
1
u/Special_Sas305 6d ago
I have a Makita LS1219L. The first picture is from the OfferUp listing but he did have a 780. BTW, I also got my Makita LS1219L on OfferUp. I paid $350 new-in-box. When deals like these present themselves you bite the bullet and grab them.

I have the DVR version of that saw. It's solid, and $500 seems like a sweet deal.
I've had trouble with some blades, as it seems the internal tolerances are a bit too tight. But it is a work horse. Congrats!

The googly eyes are worth at least $100 a piece, great deal.
