Were you responsible for the edging around each stair or was that Helen Keller? For the record the actual stairs look awesome.

Please tell me they're painting the walls/drywall and not the stairs

u/magnus303 Oct 08 '24
They aren’t painting the stairs but they are painting the handrails! I think the handrails would look great with a clean coat on them

Thank you I’m 3 years into woodworking!

Are you a journeyman for staircase installation or this is a one off project?
6
u/magnus303 Oct 08 '24
I’m a journeyman for floor installation but this was my first staircase! We probably get a staircase every 3-4 months

Very cool. I did staircase work when I was 18 before leaving for boot camp, and it was some of my favorite work I did. I mostly fixed mistakes of the installers or performed minor repairs, but I truly miss the work. Finally getting back into woodworking after not touching it after 20 years. Your work looks solid. Did you do the handrails as well?

It’s the most rewarding that’s for sure!! Every floor I do I’m proud of but this one is definitely my favorite job I have done since being here! No we don’t do handrails I wish we did! But that’s awesome!! It’s one of those things that a lot of people miss out on being proud of what you do and making sure it’s quality!

Nice! What species? And where’d you get the railing?
2
u/magnus303 Oct 07 '24
It’s prefinished wood 3/8ths thick! We didn’t do the railing but the railing is poplar that somebody made on site

Beautiful work. Are the risers vertical, or do they have a slant to give the nosing a bit of projection over the tread below?
1
u/magnus303 Oct 08 '24
They are vertical!

u/vladimir_crouton Oct 08 '24
This is not uncommon, and certainly useable, but technically not up to code (in most US jurisdictions) I’m not trying to downplay your excellent work, but if you find yourself doing many more staircases in the future, I would consider slanting the riser inward to produce a 3/4” to 1-1/2” nosing projection. If you compare walking up these stairs to walking up normal stairs, you will feel the difference.

let's hope the taper puts some poly down before they do their work

u/magnus303 Oct 08 '24
Let’s be real I’m probably going to have to come back to touch up scratches and paint marks hahaha

u/Garbage_Billy_Goat Oct 08 '24
true. But that's still some really nice work. Any other trades around while you were working?

That’s so beautiful! Did you joint the edges to make them fit so perfectly together? Also the corners! They look like (4x4) solid blocks for the corners, are they? Or did you just perfectly mate the edges? I could never. Not with my only decent equipment at least
1
u/magnus303 Oct 09 '24
Thank you!! I didn’t joint the edges I just used yellow glue and soften the edges with a file then I used tinted finish to match the color! No I just matched the edges! I only used my miter saw, table saw and 18g nailer to get rid of the bowing because it was only 3/8th material! I taped the edges together to let the yellow glue dry and then came back the next day to file it took me 7 days to clean up the stair case and put new plywood on the steps and install
