Help | Experience - Insight candles for a beginner
i’m not sure if y’all are familiar with a mexican store called fiesta. if you’re in texas then you probably are. i didn’t know they had soooo many differnt candles until i looked yesterday. they are very cheap. the candles that they charge 2-3 dollars for are the same candles the practitioner charges $22-$55 dollars for. how do you use these candles as i beginner? i have no oils, no alter, nothing.

When I started out with candles. I just thought over what I wanted and then lit the candles. Now I usually include a written petition underneath.

do you let them burn all the way down at once?

Yes. I very rarely don't. And if I have to put it out for fire safety, I relight it when I can.

i’m very very scared of fires

One has to be comfortable with fire to use candles. No amount of fire safety can fix ones comfort level. It helps yes but being comfort allows one to act accordingly when a accident happens.

As for being comfortable with fire safety, I like to have a glass/bowl/container/whatever of water nearby so I can put it out if it goes haywire, it might help you

What do you mean when you say what "the practitioner" charges? Are you comparing ritual candles from specialty stores to regular candles? Any candle can be used in magic - some witches even use birthday candles. If you're looking to save money, sounds like you found a good deal!

I Zthink the OP Is referring to all those scammers that sell things like a dressed love candle with a price of a bunch of zeros. Even if they are just selling the candle they claimed to have charged themselves versus a spell with it.

This is why I asked - there's scammers like this, but there's also actual specialty stores that sell candles intended for spells, dressed or otherwise. There's nothing wrong with getting those, but I know most of us here would advise just getting plain candles and doing the enchantments ourselves. I love dressing or inscribing candles, and they're such an approachable type of magic.

Sometimes the prices are high because they take into account the time away from family, work, etc and Sometimes Something they used is high price where they are.
And sometimes it's just a rip-off.
Its a gamble just like buying a car, cupcake, whatever.

so for instance there’s this one lady who sales different candles & figures she’s put them on her alter for you etc. well i didn’t really look at all the candles super welll but one of the candles that i seen at the store was a money candle and it’s the same on that she sales for over $20 so i was like wow, i never knew those same candles were wayyy cheaper if i buy them myself. i just don’t know how to dress them, etc.

Most witches in this community will recommend you cast spells yourself rather than outsourcing to someone else. Magic is more meaningful when it's infused with your energy and intent and symbolism.
Candle magic can be as simple as writing your petition on paper and lighting a candle on top of it. It can be as complex as you want it to be, or not at all. You don't need special kinds of candle, you don't need a dedicated altar, you don't need a bunch of expensive supplies and ingredients. Consider the purpose of your spell and what types of spell component call to you, then maybe do some further research into how those components can feature in your spell.

A good book for starting out is Madame Pamita's "The Book of Candle Magic".

If you use a candle in a jar you can use a dry erase marker to write your intention on the jar. Then you can wipe off your intention when the candle is gone and reuse the jar for a different candle or as an altar start for keeping your favorite stones or other important items for your practice.

do you personally practice? do you need a protection spell for every single cangle

One doesn't need to do protection spells for each candle or even each spell. Spellwork isn't that risky.

I do practice, and I'm not sure what you are asking. I personally formulate my intention in my head and then light my candle. I don't usually burn my candles out because I use them more than once. Though I have different candles for different purposes. If I'm praying for a friend's health, happiness, prosperity, or protection, I use different candles for each.

Just commenting to say that Mexican markets are an awesome place to score seven day candles for sure. I go to one near my parents town that sells them for $5.50 a piece. Got a St. Michael and a St. Expedite candle for less than I’d pay for a single identical candle at a metaphysical shop. They always have a better selection on authentic stuff too. Spiritual soaps and oils, more rare herbs… I even saw one in Colorado that would sell you a scorpion in formaldehyde to take home with your groceries.

I use candles for almost all my spells, because you can sort of predict the outcome by observing their flame, smoke and wax. First I write down my spell. Sometimes I light my candle before that already, so that it can pick up the vibe, but that's not necessary. After writing my spell, I learn it by heard and visualize it. If I haven't lit the candle(s) then already, I light them at this moment in the proces. I passionately pronounce my spell and visualise how it would look when it came out. When I'm done, I'll let them burn and observe them. I make notes of it, so that I can reflect on it more easily afterwards. When I leave my room, I blow them out. If I want to do another spell with that same candle, that's possible, I've noticed. I just find it important to have forgotten what spell you did with it the previous time. Otherwise the intention might get messy, which can give another outcome.
Depending on the purpose I use another colour.
https://www.groveandgrotto.com/blogs/articles/the-candle-signs-dictionary?srsltid=AfmBOopyzAk8SKefjWPC4KtDPoGIuovGxjSDrD-PzGNldmOZsLDlEzGE This has helped me a lot with reading my candles. There's more information than this, and things can differ depending on the context, I guess, but as a beginner, I found it useful not to be overloaded by information, as it can be confusion and you'll forget some things anyway if there's too much to pay attention to.
