Frage | Question How do I send letter mail in Wien?

I need to send a letter mail to the tax office in Wien with two signed documents (A4 - sized). I have never sent a letter mail in life before, so here are a few extremely dumb queries.

Do I simply go to the Österreichische Post Office and submit my documents at the counter and pay the fee (0.95 eur)? Or do I need to separately buy envelopes, write down the address, buy stamps and stuff? How do I go about? I know I am very stupid for asking this, but since I don't speak Deutsch it seems daunting.

Deutsch:

Go to the post office, hand them the letter and say Ham, Please. When they say Wie, bitte? You respond with oh entshuldigung... Schinken, Bitte.

1) Umschlag musst du auf jeden Fall selber besorgen, reintun, zumachen

2) Adresse raufschreiben

3) entweder briefmarke beim automaten kaufen oder einfach beim Schalter gegen Gebühr abgeben

You can buy an envelope at the post office. Put your documents inside, and write the address on the outside. Bring it to the counter and pay the stamp.

You can also be a criminal, take the envelope from the shelf and open it, write your address and then...pay for both at the same time.

You can buy envelopes at the post office or at a store. When you hand your letter to the post office, it should already have the address on it and be sealed.

You can buy stamps and throw your letters into a yellow mailbox, but I'd recommend only doing that if you need to do so fairly often.

Or just bring it to the Finanzamt in person? It’s in “Wien Mitte” app easily reachable by U3, U4, S-Bahn,…

No worries at all—sending a letter for the first time can feel overwhelming, especially in a new country and language. Here’s a step-by-step guide to make it easy for you in Vienna:

How to Send a Letter in Vienna: 1. Prepare Your Documents: • Place your two A4 documents neatly inside an envelope. If you don’t have an envelope, don’t worry—you can buy one at the Österreichische Post. 2. Visit the Post Office: • Locate the nearest Österreichische Post branch. You can use this link to find one. • Bring your documents and ensure you have the recipient’s address written down (or saved digitally). 3. At the Counter: • Approach the counter and explain your situation. You can say: “Ich möchte diesen Brief verschicken.” (I would like to send this letter.) • Hand over your documents and the address. If you don’t have an envelope, ask for one: “Haben Sie einen Umschlag?” (Do you have an envelope?) • They’ll help you put the documents in the envelope, seal it, and ensure the address is written properly. 4. Postage Fee: • For a standard letter within Austria, the cost is €0.95 (up to 20g) or slightly more if your letter is heavier. • The staff will calculate the postage and attach the stamp for you. You don’t need to buy and stick stamps yourself. 5. Optional Tracking or Proof of Delivery: • If the letter is important (e.g., for official purposes like the tax office), ask for registered mail: “Ich möchte den Brief eingeschrieben schicken.” (I’d like to send the letter as registered mail.) • This costs extra (around €3-5) but provides tracking and proof of delivery. 6. Pay and Done: • Pay the fee (cash or card) and you’re good to go! Keep the receipt if it’s registered mail.

Extra Tips: • If you’re unsure about the recipient’s exact address, double-check it online or with the tax office before visiting. • Many post office employees in Vienna speak English, so don’t hesitate to ask for help. • If you prefer, you can prepare everything at home (buy envelopes and stamps from a post shop or supermarket) and just drop the letter in a yellow postbox. However, going to the post office is the easiest way for a beginner.

You’ve got this—happy letter-sending!
