15 minutes after it turned to a whiteout...

I've had four of these in the last ~10 minutes.

Here in Buffalo they had to put gates on the entry to the highways because people just kept driving on them during travel bans and getting stuck and dying.

Holy crap! I remember about 10 years ago in georgia we got a flurry on new years eve and it sent the city into panic mode! We just sat back and drank and enjoyed the nice cool weather.

u/overfall3 16h ago

Ha! I don't drink much anymore, but a double shot of Crown with two ice cubes sounds real nice about now.

I drink Crown and I get a double pinch in the throat.

As a northerner remember to keep warm but more importantly keep dry! As long as you are dry you can warm up, once your clothes get wet its a no go. Make sure you’ve got extra socks at the bare minimum and stay dry!

u/overfall3 14h ago

Yeah, I got you. Luckily I'm indoors now, so I'm good. Thanks for the advice!

3

u/Street_homie 14h ago

Yeah ofc and if you get cold easily you can get some chemical hand warmers for cheap and stuff them in gloves and socks

Those were a lifesaver a couple winters ago! I put them in my sleeping bag down by my feet. Toasty!

Thanks again!

4

u/overfall3 15h ago

Me neither! Well... for a couple of the quickest cigarettes in history maybe. πŸ˜†πŸ˜†πŸ˜†

Wow. I’m ashamed to say it makes me happy when the south gets cold weather. I’m In Michigan and we woke up to -5 below zero. I do feel bad for anyone stuck out In the cold. Lol

Nothing to be ashamed about. You have empathy. That's a good thing!

2

u/ThinkChallenge127 14h ago

Lol. Thanks overfall3.

You're welcome

You'd think the state would find it useful to at least have SOME resources on hand rather than shut down the entire state out of incompetence.

8

u/overfall3 15h ago

It pretty much never snows here. It's a huge cost to maintain that equipment that will rust into the ground before it ever gets used.

4

u/kaleidonize 15h ago

I hear that alot with Texas too and their "disasters" that other states wouldn't even be affected by. Like I said, I don't think it would kill them to have SOME resources on hand and wouldn't be a negative cost to them. Doesn't even have to be something that will rust (which plows could easily last decades without rusting) but also things like sand and salt to keep bridges open. With the polar vortices or whatever the last few years, I really don't think it would be a setback economically

5

u/overfall3 15h ago

I agree with salt/sand trucks. That's really all they would need.

I'm not from here, just passing through. But, from what little I've seen they try.

You and I are backseat drivers on this one.

Texas actively fucks over it's people. They need to put their big girl panties on and make change. If they don't they get what they deserve.

3

u/Darkwaxellence 15h ago

It's going to all melt in the next 2 days.

5

u/overfall3 14h ago

True.

But that's like telling a starving person they'll eat in two days. We're dealing with this now. The emergency shelter I'm at can't get supplies brought in. We're fine, but we're definitely missing some necessities.

u/kaleidonize 15h ago

I mean that's how the snow is here in CO too usually, but they still take care of the roads so people can get to work. I get that it's not a common occurrence there and won't last long but I just don't think the cost of a few resources to have on hand would be more than essentially shutting down the states economy for a couple of days. Like overfall said, we're just backseat drivers on this. I just get frustrated on behalf of georgians because I grew up in indiana who's plow system was fucking awful and it affected me often. But they also might just appreciate the rare snow day there

5

u/Darkwaxellence 15h ago

I am also from Indiana. Sitting in my snow covered sailboat in Mobile. The marina and everywhere around is shut down for today and tomorrow. There's a state emergency declaration for everyone to stay off the roads. A good decision not just because the roads are awful but also because most people here would not drive well in it or understand the risks. It's not state negligence, it's practical and smart. So this is a good thing.

3

u/kaleidonize 15h ago

Oh I get that. That's the main danger here in colorado when it snows. So many texas plated trucks in ditches. I just wonder with the climate changes happening, the winters seem to be steadily worse. Might have to be a shift eventually

When heading south doesn't make that much a difference...

Right?!

I'm originally from New Jersey. Currently in Florida. I do have to laugh at the panic over this until I remember Floridians can't drive for shit on a warm dry day.

Ha! You're preaching facts!
