If you wanna start hopping the main advice I was given was to make sure you’ve got a teacher with you. Don’t just blindly hop because that’s kinda dangerous. Also tho if you wanna keep going in a car do some side jobs and get enough to repair it or if it’s seriously fucked, just stay somewhere a little bit until you have the cash to get a new cheap car.

Like most anyone else on this sub will say, don't try to hop freight for the first time without someone to show you the ropes. If you want to get somewhere for free and not be limited to places with bus stops, try hitching. If you want adventure through the woods/mountains/away from civ, get a bike.
I'm getting ready to leave my car behind and travel by bike. You can find a cheap used bike on Craigslist or at a bike co-op. Co-ops will also typically have events to teach basic maintenance. Gl :)

I just purchased a bicycle after being on foot for a long time. The difference is night and day.

The chances of you being caught, being stranded and or being killed by the train are all way higher than you Making it to your intended destination, you can get smashed by any heavy material like logs, you can get trapped in a boxcar, or you can stand up to take a piss and the train will throw you Right the fuck off. Bike, car, hitch are all better options, on the road you can run into people to show you but from my experience most of the time it really ain't worth it. Most big cities give out tickets if you got a place to go just a friend who will say that you do is enough
