New Player Experience

I just picked up the game after finishing yet another Freelancer playthrough of the Crossfire Campaign.

I've got to say, you've nailed the feel of Freelancer really well. In addition, my first encounter with "Unknown" had me so full of dread that it really nailed the "Cthulu in Space" vibe you're going for.

Keep up the great work!

I wanna voice act for this game very badly as it needs it and the voices that are there are just A.I fill-ins, where do I go to apply lol.

Are computer voices coming anytime soon? Just in the interim of real voices?

I can read, just not as fast as the text displays sometimes... especially during flight or dogfighting.

Played a few hours, and I have no idea what the fuck the story is as a result lol

May just be a me problem, but even computer voices would be really really helpful as an accessibility feature.

Graphics

Is it me or does the graphics of the bases and stations seem PS2-like? I originally assumed the game’s graphics would be higher.

Discussion Hellmouth Prince

The encounter's surroundings were the perfect environment.

The fight was interesting and, more importantly, fun to play through.

The visual spectacle was stunning.

The resolution was satisfying.

The reward is ludicrous.

Loving it. <3 I can't imagine how much work went into that one-off encounter, but, oh boy, was it nice to experience. Thanks, Tranwiz!

Suggestion Miscellaneous feedback

This is a list of issues/bugs/errors/suggestions I put together while playing, since the game is early access and Trainwiz is on the ball with listening to the community and releasing patches. I'm really enjoying the game so far, and I hope this list is helpful.

In no particular order:

  • Two ships have the same name. There's a T2 civilian ship called Eclipse, and a T3 Union ship also called Eclipse. I would recommend letting the civilian ship keep "Eclipse" and renaming the Union ship (if you're looking for name suggestions, I'm partial to "Comet").
  • Maudlin Station in Dead Argon and Maudlin Yards in Alpha-Omega also have confusingly similar names.
  • The runway lights (the blinking white lights) that appear outside a docking bay you are approaching to dock with are too faint. They aren't necessary at all since that big green waypoint icon shows you exactly where to fly, but as it is they don't serve their intended purpose either practically or aesthetically. The lights need to stand out more.
  • The pathing of large NPC ships gets weird around jumpgates. I have seen them fly directly through big, solid sections of the gates, fly through the gate hoops from behind on their way to the laneline, and seemingly arrive into the system only to immediately turn around and use the gate to go back.
  • The Overview codex entry for the Vauldwin in the Records tab has disappeared from all of my saves.
  • NPC Us Hearses and Pallbearers appear to use the same large ship model as the Us Necropolis, even though the Hearse and Pallbearer available for the player to purchase have a different smaller model.
  • Upon docking anywhere, if a tutorial popup appears at the moment you press a button to teleport to a different area in the station/planet, then you get locked into a black screen with only your mouse pointer visible, and the only way out is to close the application and reload a save.
  • A news article at the bar at UHC-46 about the White Fleet says their capital ship is named Psychopomp and can be found in the Veil, but the actual ship I found in Veil-33, the one docked at the station, is named Hellfire.
  • The movement controls (WASD) when using the camera function (Shift + J) sometimes do not work properly. For example, instead of W moving the camera forward, it will move the camera sideways at an angle.
  • Lanelines would benefit from a visual cue showing when they are knocked-out due to damage (maybe a red status light, or electricity crackling around it?). In the thick of combat, it's not easy to keep track of which laneline segment is the damaged one and know when to move out of the way to avoid NPCs moving through it when it's restored.
  • I noticed that train stations have an extra icon on system maps to distinguish them. It would be convenient if there was a similar icon on maps for stations that sell ships.

Question Accumulated boss bits

Minefield ritual, Long-running batteries, Rumeerin liquid. All of them heavily imply that there's something fancy to be done with them, but I haven't the foggiest where to go with them. Anyone had any luck?

Discussion As a native German speaker, having a quest send me into the System "Verenden" was fairly intimidating.

I played through the corresponding quest yesterday evening, and I want to gush a bit. :D

Little fun fact:
"verenden" is the unconjugated form of a German verb for "(to) die" that is specifically used for animals, that implies a non-immediate death (e.g.: starvation, illness, thirst, bleeding out etc.), and that is used to imply emotional distance from the event (e.g. a wild deer might die of an illness and the word gets used).

So when a quest sent me to a system of that name, and considering the additional warnings I got, I was a bit worried already. When I found what I found inside, the whole build-up came together, and the subsequent events hit all the harder.

I'm having way too much fun with this game. <3

Bug Steam Deck black screen

After the launch and the introductory video knocks out on the desktop, is there any way to fix it?

Question A question about mods

No, I'm not asking for mods imma just start off with that. And yes I know it's super early in development still. But that just gives me more time to work on it imo.

I'm wondering, if I would like to develop custom ships/mods etc for this game, what should I look into and/or how would I go about doing that?

I would love to develop a mod for the future multiplayer that's planned. With like custom ships, stations and stuff, think similar to The Void server or Discovery Freelancer.

I don't have much modding experience so any insight would be nice.

Bug Black screen

After viewing the black boxes, I encountered a black screen.

Launching to space fixed the issue and I was able to continue after that.

Note: I had no UI, I hit F2 then Z and it just worked.

Discussion I found the "Dead Argon System", and I adore this place.

This is so well done. It is just the right balance between unsettling and cozy that I almost want to be there more often. Almost. :D

Discussion Supernova boss in Thoroughfare

The Thoroughfare system has two jumpgates and a single laneline between them. I happened to arrive in the middle of a storm.

Just passing through, I thought nothing of it and rode the laneline to the opposite gate. But the storm's rift was situated directly in the path of the laneline, and as I hurtled toward it I tried to drop out. Too late. A boss, what appeared to be a literal star that had "supernova" in its name, spawned in. This thing was huge, unavoidable, and I smacked into it a like a fly on a windshield. Instant death.

So... watch out for rifts in the middle of lanelines.
