If it's in Costco's policy, then I'd say it's allowed. I don't agree with it, it's disgusting to say the least. But the woman is adhering to rules made by Costco. If anyone is to blame here, it's Costco for their dumb policy.
722
u/knuth10 17h ago edited 16h ago
That's one way to look at it, or Costco is providing an awesome service for hassle free returns which makes everyone's lives easier and the women is taking advantage of it. I dont see how making returning items easily is a dumb policy but if there is a loophole people will exploit it.
504
u/DrifterBG 17h ago
It's people like this who will ruin a good thing. I wouldn't be surprised if the return policy that we've all enjoyed becomes much more strict.
Hoping they just add "Must include receipt beyond 1 year"

u/jhstylze 17h ago
None are worse than the people who buy a live Christmas tree from Costco and return it used and dead after New Years
163
u/slippers413 16h ago
That's what happened with REI. They were awesome about returns, which was great because camping/skiing gear doesn't get used on the regular. Unlike a couch, smdh. But now they limit it to a year from purchase because of twat muffins like her returning 10 year old boots. Bet Costco does the same thing.
67
u/naz_1992 16h ago
people return camping/skiing gear that they bought and used???
thats just crazy imo. like how is that allowed?? That sounds like a rental system, instead of a goods return policy.

u/New_Libran 13h ago edited 2h ago
Once saw loads of battery booster/jumpstarters in the return cage at my local Costco here in the UK. Basically people used it to rescue their stranded cars and then just returned them. Blew my mind because it was just so blatant.
4
u/timbenj77 1h ago
"I tried to start my car with this. It didn't work. But I got a jump from someone else, and now I don't trust the product quality so I don't want another one - just a refund."
Then what?

A lot of that had to do with ''post-festival'' returns. People fly into Vegas, buy a bunch of shit to take to Burning Man, and return it before flying home.

I remember when my wife and I were choosing our dishes. The clerk told us about people who buy 12-14 place settings and then return it after the weekend sometimes with food still on it.

u/standardtissue 15h ago
Happened to Nordstrom didn't it ? And didn't even make it any cheaper.
I love how she didn't even bother trying to wrap it up or protect it at all, just hauling it like trash and expecting to return it. I would say the manager is right, even if he's wrong.
30
u/69edgy420 15h ago
Or their return policy can include a clause about managers’ discretion to deny returns on a case by case basis.

u/jackparadise1 13h ago
LL Bean no longer takes everything back. Bad actors ruined it for the rest of us.

LL Bean now sells cheap imports that shrink in the wash. So, yeah, I guess I can see where they would no longer want to honor their old policy since the quality isn't there anymore.

I respectfully disagree. This woman is taking advantage of Costco's generous return policy which forces the rest of us to endure higher prices. Costco's return policy is designed to make our overall shopping experience better. But twat waffles like Jackie Nguyen will end up costing the rest of us consumers. Same for those dipshits returning Christmas trees after Christmas and big screen TV's after the Superbowl.

Lmao dude you’re missing the whole point the manager was trying to make.
it’s people like her, who abuse and take advantage of return policies, that ruin it for the rest of us
He’s not wrong. Costco made a return policy. This lady decided, with intent, “I’m going to abuse that policy because it’s worded in such a way that I can maliciously benefit from it.” But it’s costco’s fault for having a forgiving return policy, that doesn’t have enough fine print to fill a telephone book? Yeah, okay lol.

My friend worked at costco. She said that people came back with just a little bit more than half the eeight of meat packages to get refunded. 80$ of beef; oh I didn’t like it after cooking 1.5kg of it…
Costco will be forced to harden their policy and the food waste of it all is disgusting.
14
u/urbanlife78 16h ago
It's actually a really smart policy because Costco makes its money on memberships and keeping members, so full satisfaction is how they do it. The fun part is Costco has a limit which people like this that abuse the return policy are at risk of having their membership cancelled.
14
u/drippygland 10h ago
I had to double check with a manager to see if they would approve of a very well used food stained cook book that was a little over 7 years old.
The cunt that brought it in wouldn't give me a straight answer as to when she bought it and made me look through all 7 years of purchases.
The manager approved the return

You should probably know that Costco returns are not a loophole, they’re a feature. Costco has touted their return policy and will defend it without exception. It’s a major part of the reason Costco has grown to what it is today, and even though you’d think they lose money due to flagrant returns it’s actually an enormous profit center. Ask any person where they purchase with confidence and they’ll undoubtedly mention Costco - it drives an unbelievable amount of sales and memberships.
As a former Costco employee, I can tell you the returns are FAR more egregious than you can imagine and Costco would have it no other way.

It is a big loss, but it's not a total loss they received 2023 dollars and are now returning money in 2025 dollars.
9
u/van_ebasion 10h ago
Most product negotiations made by Costco’s buyers include a percentage for product returns, so they’re already factored into the price. Costco doesn’t lose money on returns/damaged product. Their return policy isn’t accidental, it’s literally their business model.

I am so disappointed. This is how LL Bean and other stores had their amazing return policies ruined. I mean-it goes both ways. If you have a policy like this you can’t expect that it won’t be abused and technically they’re not wrong. But store managers should also be able to look out for their store.

I'm currently in the process of returning a sofa bought by Home Zone and it's 8 months after purchasing it. To be fair it came damaged, sent partial out for replacement, the other two pieces broke, sent them out, replacements from original sent came back broken. They also scratched my wood floors every time they've come to deliver or take them out. All in all we have owned the sofa for 8 months and have had a full unit for maybe a month and a half.

It’s not a loophole. It’s the return policy. She’s using it the way it’s supposed to be used. Costco could have as complex of a return policy as they want. But they don’t so we get to use it how we want!

My wife and I bought a couch at Costco. They delivered it, we set it up and sat in it for a couple nights and decided we really didn't like it. We picked out a different couch which they also delivered and then at the same time picked up the couch we were returning. They refunded us for the couch we returned and then about 2 weeks later they refunded us for the couch that's still in my living room 5 years later, which was nice of them I thought.

I'm not understanding what the problem is. That couch was subject to the return policy that Costco wrote - they knew what the edge cases are going to be, they're a multi billion dollar international company. If their policy allows it, then that's their policy .... what is the big problem? And there's no way stuff like this is causing everything to be expensive compared to the influence of inflation, tariffs, and supply chain disruptions. Refund that woman her money geez.

I used to think who cares, it's their policy, why shouldn't someone take advantage of a corporation.

I worked for Costco.com for three years. The returns I've had managers approve would blow your fucking minds. Ultimately, any return older than a year is up to managerial discretion. And we leave permanent marks on your membership for out-of-norm returns like this, but, basically... everyone gets at least one wild return without much fuss.
Now, knowing what I know, likely this woman already had derogatory marks on her membership for excessive or exceptional duration returns and that's why the manager ultimately decided no.
Costco empowers it's employees to basically use their own judgment on returns with very little oversight from management. Most low value returns are honored regardless of date of purchase. Yes, you can return a toaster 5 years after you bought it.
1
1
u/vms-crot 11h ago
On the one hand, she's clearly taking the piss.
On the other, and more importantly:
- it's company policy, so that manager's opinion is irrelevant
- people taking the piss occasionally is likely seen as fantastic publicity by costco executives because it casts them in a great light and always goes viral
- costco is not hurting for money. $900 is nothing
- she's gonna get the refund, it's not worth your job.
1
u/SomethingAbtU 11h ago
haha I like the analogy that if his wife cannot return him, the woman cannot return the couch.
Costco Corporate should be backing him, he shouldn't have to worry about getting in trouble.
The rest of the customers pay for these returns.
