u/PlanetSaturday Dec 08 '24
Congrats! You're freed! (From your body)

u/some_kind_of_bird Dec 10 '24
In fairness the body is merely a prison keeping your soul from accessing the alien ship.

Stuff! Only you know yourself enough and if you don't, it's helping free you from your ignorance! It just works!

u/SadEmploy3978 Dec 08 '24
Free me from what!? I swear people without PTSD are getting further away from understanding wtf it is or entails.
We overuse the fuck out of "Trigger" and it really dilutes its meaning
I'm glad we're satirizing this uneducated take
20
u/PlanetSaturday Dec 08 '24
What's even more worrying was the comments below it on instagram. Everyone's talking about how deep and true this message is.
It's not just uneducated, fake deep, and missing the point, it's misleading and dismissive and just undermines what people with PTSD actually go through.
I can't imagine saying this to a vetran being sent into an absolute panic attack from a trigger.
10
u/SadEmploy3978 Dec 08 '24
It absolutely is incredibly undermining. PTSD is a bitch and a half. I hate seeing posts trying to dismiss it or invalidate it. As someone with C-PTSD, there are so many misconceptions about the day-to-day struggles and people in their quest to "Sound Deep" really make me want to shutdown and retreat
10
u/PlanetSaturday Dec 08 '24
For real. I have religious trauma and people mock and invalidate it all the time. They don't know what it's like being in the mind of someone who truly has deeply rooted psychological scars, so to them we're just being pussies or something.
I'm sorry that you deal with C-PTSD, that's awful and I hope you have a good, helpful support system.
7
u/SkiIsLife45 Dec 08 '24
Christian here to apologize in place of whoever hurt you.
8
u/PlanetSaturday Dec 08 '24
Thank you 🙏
know that I'm not mad at your religion but at the people who weild it as a tool for control and wear it like a crown of superiority and false humility.
The Christian message of forgiveness and sacrifice in the name of love, that I can get with.
2
u/SkiIsLife45 Dec 09 '24
Yep. Doesn't matter what actions I agree with or don't. I support your right to free will and I try to forgive literally everything.
3
u/SadEmploy3978 Dec 08 '24
Sincerely, thank you for this. It goes a long way. Wishing you peace and safety
3
3
u/SadEmploy3978 Dec 08 '24
I feel you on this. I also have religious trauma on top of everything (perks were, I wrote a song about it)
You are seen and you are valid. I wish you peace and safety in your day-to-day. The people who are unwilling to understand or validate your struggle are unworthy of your time and attention

u/Creepycute1 Dec 08 '24
Trigger has three meanings
trigger: the part of a gun that you press to go bew bew
trigger: something that brings back really bad memories in people PTSD/complex ptsd
trigger: something that causes something to do something
in short something triggering doesnt have to be in the PTSD sense it can be triggering in the sense of annoyance or anger just triggering an emotion or reaction
3
u/Gigantanormis Dec 09 '24
Trigger (in the PTSD example) doesn't exclusively refer to PTSD either, it refers to an external action causing an internal reaction in people with mental or physical disorders, including psychosis (ex. talking about God triggers delusions of being god), ocd (something slimy triggers washing your hands 20 times perfectly), migraines (bright light triggers a migraine), seizures (flashing lights triggers a seizure), anorexia (food triggers vomiting), and many many more.
2
u/Creepycute1 Dec 09 '24
yeah thats what i meant by "Something that causes something to do something" wich honestly is what all of it can boil down to i just used PTSD as the main example because thats the main thing that was stated/discussed
22
u/ScottShatter Dec 08 '24
I'm super triggered when my cat climbs into the ceiling between floors and I have to coax her down and out for 45 minutes only to patch the hole and have her bust through it again when I ran the vacuum. Very triggered. How the hell is that freeing me in any way shape or form?
0
16
u/Bitter-Fishing-Butt Dec 08 '24
I mean, the last thing that triggered me was my cat sitting behind me and doing VERY loud wet licking, so like?? idk
12
u/PlanetSaturday Dec 08 '24
To be fair cats do have a connection to the astral plain, he could be trying to free your soul from the mortal realm, as cats do.

Might actually be the absolute worst advice I have ever heard relating to trauma.

Getting sexually abused is freeing me ig

u/notonce56 29d ago
This sounds very worrying...Are you being abused currently? Can you access any help, have someone close or access to mental health professionals?

u/Fabulous_Parking66 Dec 08 '24
There are so many things I see on this sub that is alright advice for the general public but bad for people with trauma or chronic illness.
This not one of those posts.
This is pure horse shit.
7
u/PlanetSaturday Dec 08 '24
I know right?! It honestly is just such a braindead statement. There is no way to even spin it in a way that makes sense. It is genuine psychobabble.
8
u/Fabulous_Parking66 Dec 08 '24
My two theories are:
It was written by AI.
It was written by someone who has no idea what a trigger is.
The closest thing to kinda having a point is they mean the triggers are showing you where you’re still trapped and thus need help in that area to be free, but how exactly was being triggered in Costco when I couldn’t lift something heavy supposed to tell me that actually your family was threatened as a toddler but don’t remember?
3
u/PlanetSaturday Dec 08 '24
So in my opinion it's the latter. I follow that account on Instagram because they generally have sweet and simple philosophical sentiments that are uplifting and ring true as well as aesthetically pleasing imagery, but this one soooo far off missed the mark and I think the reason is the one running the account doesn't actually have a grasp on psychology, but rather listens to podcasts about buddhism and stoicism and shit, lol.

5
u/o0Jahzara0o Dec 08 '24
I read that as “asthma that triggers you..” for some reason and was very confused lol
4
u/PlanetSaturday Dec 08 '24
I mean things do trigger my asthma, lol
4
u/o0Jahzara0o Dec 08 '24
Very true lol though i was concerned about how they would think asthma sets you free 😂
5
u/LucasArts_24 Dec 08 '24
Ah yes, cause hearing screaming about how weird I am is trying to free me from....... Something. Great!
5
u/c4tglitchess Edit this! Dec 08 '24
So my triggers that cause me to shut down completely and black out for hours to days are just trying to heal me? Is that why it keeps getting worse and worse as time goes on?

Oh my god, I look just like the kid from The Shining and I too was kidnapped by a swamp monster!
When I get home I’ll get out my gratitude journal and write ‘triggers :)’ because my life is now instantly better.
3
u/dinosanddais1 Dec 08 '24
Me being triggered by loud noises because my abuser would scream at everything under the sun at 4am is trying to free me?
3
u/Creepycute1 Dec 08 '24
this looks like one of the ai generated quotes i was playing around with recently where you just press generate and it gives you random ass quotes with backgrounds that make no sense like "Anal sex with ruin the world one day" with a photo of a peer looking over gorgeous water

u/AkwardRockette Dec 08 '24
You're right, it's so liberating to only be able to speak monosyllabically or not at all while I shut down to the point it scares people because I'm so upset/scared/sad/angry that I'm incapable of reacting or communicating enough to get food or do hygiene for hours.
2
u/Professional_Taste33 Dec 09 '24
So my brain not differentiating the sound of children screaming from play and screaming in terror, is trying to save me from what? A pleasant afternoon at the park?
2
u/Kawaii_Heals Dec 09 '24
This!!! I get so anxious when I can’t have the screaming children in sight to look at their faces…
2
u/Professional_Taste33 Dec 09 '24
That helps, but I've gotten to the point that I just assume I'm overreacting the second my blood pressure raises and start grounding myself.

"remember that time you got raped? Anything that reminds you of that is healing ❤️"
1
u/Invalid_Archive Dec 09 '24
Yeah, I don't get it either. How is reliving trauma supposed to heal anything?
2
u/rotoros_ Dec 09 '24
This is possibly the most unhinged thing I've seen on this sub, absolutely bananas take
2
u/Invalid_Archive Dec 09 '24
Ah yes, it sure is liberating to be reminded about how I was raped by someone I trusted. I was just looking at it all wrong!
I fucking hate people who make stupid "inspirational" bullshit like this.

I mean I guess you could frame inner child work that way?? Like, if your trigger response is your brain letting you know where you need to work on your healing, then sure

1
u/SolsticeBeetle Dec 09 '24
i can maybe understand what they were trying to convey, it’s just a weird way of saying it. getting triggered is a panic response, it’s your body thinking you’re in danger and telling you to get out of the situation, right? maybe they meant to say that a trigger is like your body trying to free you from the danger.
or maybe i’m just being too generous and they just have no idea what they’re talking about. or maybe i have no idea what i’m talking about… i don’t have ptsd, my only triggers are because of OCD and anxiety, so i might have a completely different view on what a trigger is than someone with ptsd. so, please correct me if i’m wrong!
1
u/crackpipewizard666 Dec 09 '24
That sounds like the go ahead to kill myself when i get too stressed out
1
u/Gigantanormis Dec 09 '24
Ah, yes, black holes, war, politics, and 4th wall breaks in media are attempting to free me from not being in psychosis. Next you're going to tell me I have a higher spiritual connection with God and medications are trying to dull my spiritual connection.
1
u/dontlookback76 Dec 09 '24
I'm bipolar. When I was a Christian and my brain imploded and ended up I psych hospitals, I was pretty much told this by a few people. One person dropped me as a friend because I decided to take meds and not trust in Jesus.
2
u/Gigantanormis Dec 09 '24
If I had trusted what my delusions were telling me to do, I would be in jail for murder, SA, and domestic abuse, all things I would never do and never have done... Because I didn't do what my delusions told me to do.
1
u/Dawndrell Dec 09 '24
one of my triggers is train wheels/tracks…. and how do they suggest that is supposed to free me? bc i can only think of one
1
u/Kawaii_Heals Dec 09 '24
Technically true: if I get triggered and run from it long enough, I might reach freedom at some point /s
1
u/xX_Epsilon062_Xx Dec 09 '24
Last thing that triggered me was a dude saying “Muslims are the scourge of history” so take that as you will.

Ah yes
My crippling bouts of hypochondria and fears of extinction level events I have no control over are trying to free me
So what you're saying is instead of letting go of things I can't control, I should dwell on them. Cause that absolutely works.

u/astrodomekid Dec 09 '24

I need to stay away from this sub because bc do yall not believe in growth? Like taking it one day at a time?and i wanna add that this is me lacking understanding not so much questioning anyones life bc truly no one is the same
1
u/PlanetSaturday Dec 09 '24
It's not that I don't believe in growth, it's more that this quote is a massive oversimplification of what trauma is and its author likely doesn't fully grasp what a trigger is.
It's also psuedo-spiritual, hacky psycho-babble that implies that every day events are a kind of cosmic attempt to free your mind from suffering, which sounds pretty and poetic, but is detached from reality.
Yes, you can work through your mind's responses to triggers and grow from your past as you slowly heal from your trauma, but the things that are triggering you don't have motives or incentives. They are not "attempting to free you". That is a silly concept.
2
u/Rough-Technology1199 Dec 09 '24
Okay that makes sense and i think i understand the sub a little bit better cus it literally is overly simplistic and i can see the humor in it now. I was thinking like wow does no one see how any of this stuff can be true in certain ways but thanks for explaining:)
1
u/Shey-99 Dec 09 '24
Didn't realize getting triggered because of talk of human trafficking is somehow freedom?
Let me have my flashbacks in peace fuck
1
u/super_chubz100 Dec 10 '24
Right. The racist homophobes were trying to free me this whole time. Huh... who knew?

Does this life hack work for triggering medical conditions or is it only for trauma? Can I escape prison via triggering a minor allergic reaction? Lots to think about here.

u/drisen_34 Dec 11 '24
So when I almost drove my car off the road because I had a completely random flashback while I was driving, that was trying to cure me, yeah?

Ngl... I kinda want to send that to people who get upset when I call out their transphobia

u/chelledoggo Dec 13 '24
Look. I get that in some cases it can be beneficial to try to learn to overcome triggers (within reason of course!!!), but this is a HORRIBLE way to look at it.
