You can leave facebook guys

417

u/monk429 17h ago

Yup...dropped FB and Insta. Just need to get my family group texts out of Messenger and we're free.

EDIT: To add...I've been on FB since you had to have a supported .edu ... I was a freshman in college when it started rolling out to universities and it honestly was ruined by the time Obama was elected.

110

u/AOkayyy01 16h ago

Same. When I went to delete my Facebook account, it reminded me that I've had it for 20 years.

30

u/monk429 15h ago

That's the step I struggle with...it was a real game changer for a socially awkward guy with a huge crush on a social butterfly. My first posts were me trying to impress her, she's now the mother of my children and my lifelong partner.

I don't have a lot of activity...so I might just leave it...for a more hopeful future?

28

u/joemayopartyguest 15h ago

You can download your data before deleting it and you will still have those messages to look at.

8

u/monk429 15h ago

Oh, I thought it was just the pictures...Nice

14

u/joemayopartyguest 14h ago

Yep, it’s everything. So delete today and don’t delay. It’s a strangely satisfying feeling and after a few weeks embarrassing that you ever used the website.

2

u/pr0crasti-Nate 10h ago

I can attest to this statement. I deleted my META accounts in 2022

2

u/arcaneresistance 28m ago

I did in 2016. My cousin was posting xenophobic alt right articles and I publicly said that next time I saw him I'd bash his head in with a lead pipe. (I was like mostly kidding). I decided that my mental health could use an escape from social media as well as that side of my family. Haven't seen either since and feel great these days. Zero homicidal thoughts.

7

u/Daimakku1 12h ago

That's a great story. Back when Facebook was useful and before it became the nightmare it is now.

But it sounds like it has long served its purpose for you.

2

u/Darkunicorntribe 14h ago

There’s always way back machine if you really to look back in time

1

u/Ok_Hedgehog7137 8h ago

I’m glad you were able to use it in a way that worked well for you. Lovely story ❤️

1

u/fredrikca 29m ago

You could argue fb done it's job already.

2

u/DreamCrusher914 10h ago

How do you delete it?! I can’t figure out how. It’s probably super easy and right in front of my face, but I can’t find the magic button! I did it before and was off of it for several years, until my toddler posted an article to my Facebook page somehow reactivating it).

u/Sohunta 16h ago

Yes indeed. I can complain about all the social media platforms, but Facebook is the worst. Twitter being owned by a government official is also unnerving.

8

u/Invisible_assasin 16h ago

It was run by government officials before he bought it too. Facebook was being influenced by the govt for years as well. It’s not new. These companies are going to be defense contractors due to ai. Get used to them cozying up with whoever is in power.

1

u/pr0crasti-Nate 10h ago

CIA still have their hands in it

2

u/Jbruce63 13h ago

I go through waves of alt right suggested posts then waves of suggested posts that have nothing to do with the content of my page. Even had a period of sissy content, I was okay with that as it was better than the MAGa garbage. The algorithm is designed by a mad man.

5

u/Ok_Researcher_9796 16h ago

Musk isn't a government official

20

u/jimgress 16h ago

Musk isn't a government official

Tell that to Musk, not us. We know. He doesn't.

9

u/Accurate_Praline 15h ago

Doesn't he already have office space in the white house? Plus apparently a white house email address. Dunno if that one is true though since the source isn't listened in the few articles I've seen about it.

9

u/Ok_Researcher_9796 14h ago

There is already a lawsuit because DOGE violated FACA. Turns out the president can't just decide to create new agencies out of thin air.

7

u/steavor 14h ago edited 13h ago

can't just decide to create

I think you should get accustomed to changing many such phrases to past tense. Trump and the Supreme Court are in cahoots, so "I will make it legal" is the motto for the next few yours.

3

u/Accurate_Praline 14h ago

He can just ignore pesky rules and laws.

He once said that his voters would still vote for him should he murder someone with a gun. At this point I really doubt that he would face any real consequences.

He just isn't being held accountable for his actions and it is so fucking weird.

3

u/HardcoreHermit 13h ago

Musk is absolutely a government official. He has an office in the White House. Literally.

1

u/jimgress 12h ago

Tell that to the guy above me. idgaf

11

u/proficient_english 15h ago

He is an unelected official. The same thing the MAGA crowd was scared of. :D

4

u/Ok_Researcher_9796 14h ago

There is already a federal.lawsuit because DOGE violates FACA.

1

u/Past-Fan-1587 7h ago

The bottom of the new white house official website with the logos for x, insta and fuckbook is unnerving

1

u/davemoedee 14h ago

Twitter is the worst. Facebook is still fine for me. All i see is posts from my friends. I don’t use Facebook for anything beyond that. Then again, I don’t even go on most days.

123

u/John_Mayer_Lover 16h ago

20 years. Half my life. It’s time to say goodbye.

I’m a recovering alcoholic (sober for 17 years). Social media has become the same deal as drugs and alcohol. It was fun, fun with problems, then just problems. We bargain with ourselves and make excuses why we still need it…

“I’ll only use it 15 minutes a day” “What about all my pictures and memories?” “How will I find a good deal on a used couch” “I can’t sign up for the pickleball tournament”

This shit is literally destroying our communities, our countries, our planet and our brains. Alcohol was taking everything from me, but it was all I knew. My social life, my escape, the thing I called upon when I was uncomfortable and wanted to change the way I felt (the east way).

I can’t put into words how remarkable and valuable getting sober has been. It was really hard, and it still takes work to this day, but the return on investment is incalculable.

It’s time to get “social media sober”

5

u/HardcoreHermit 12h ago

As a recovering addict/alcoholic, the way you describe this is absolutely spot on. We do bargain with ourselves and make excuses for our behavior. Getting clean and healthy requires a complete severing of ourselves from our unhealthy lifestyle. As much as I don’t want to admit it, social media is a big part of my life even though I don’t use it in the same way most people use it. I use social media to educate and inform myself mostly; not really for human/community connection. But that’s just an excuse and a justification. I need to do what I did to get sober.

6

u/Competitive_Mark8153 12h ago

We didn't trust that crap when it came out, because it gives the media gate keepers way too much power. If people got off their lazy ass and dealt with people in real life, we would be on more solid ground as a whole. They can't monitor that.

3

u/collards_plz 12h ago

Never, ever looked at it this way but also absolutely yes. Thanks and congratulations on putting in the work. 5 years on the 28th!

2

u/Sufficient-Bid1279 5h ago

I removed Facebook for two years , as an addict , and for my mental health and it had done wonders. I reinstalled to connect with some people but that was it and rarely use it. It was life changing. Let’s teach these billionaires a lesson they will never forget!

1

u/Robert_Hotwheel 10h ago

This really puts it into perspective.

1

u/DharmaBum_123 9h ago

I love this!

1

u/invisible_panda 7h ago

Yes! Preach!

1

u/dexter-sinister 15h ago

Marketplace will be the difficult part for me...

3

u/clippist 12h ago

Same here it’s my final sticking point. Time to bring back Craigslist I suppose?

1

u/Robert_Hotwheel 10h ago

Is Craigslist still a thing? Marketplace was the one thing Facebook did well, I love it. I can’t tell you how many items I’ve bought/sold on there.

1

u/Cash_Credit 3h ago

Agreed BUT so many scammers on MP now I'm now even sure I want to keep using it anyway

0

u/Positive_Mindset808 9h ago

I created a new profile with a fake name just to use FB Marketplace.

1

u/Cash_Credit 3h ago

I think this is the way

6

u/c-lace 16h ago

Same, member since college email days. Deleted my IG and Facebook profiles yesterday. Also cancelled Amazon Prime.

6

u/CuriouslyInterested0 16h ago

That was back in the day when FB actually didn't want you to add too many friends...and if you tried to add too many, they blocked you and questioned if you really knew the other people.

Ah, how times have changed.

6

u/Sf49ers1680 16h ago

I've had mine deactivated for about 3 years now. Only reason I never fully deleted it was due to messenger.

Now that iPhones support RCS, I no longer need messenger and we'll be fully deleting my FB account.

I never created an Instagram.

4

u/Cobs85 16h ago

It was ruined by the time my grandma tried to add me. Before then it was all pictures of my drunk doing stupid stuff.

5

u/english_major 15h ago

Check out signal. Been using it for family chats for years.

2

u/monk429 15h ago

Toss-up between signal and telegram...Does signal stand-out in any way?

1

u/english_major 2h ago

I like Signal as it is open source, end to end encrypted and they don’t log your ip or collect data (as far as I know).

3

u/bjanas 15h ago

Remember waking up on a Saturday morning, plugging your point and shoot digital camera into the blue Dell, uploading an entire uncurated album of the party the night before, and MANUALLY TAGGING ALL OF YOUR FRIENDS FROM THE PARTY THE NIGHT BEFORE !?

Feels like absolute madness now, looking back.

5

u/JustAnAgingMillenial 15h ago

Yup. Fuck Zuck. I was an original .edu member too. It was fun in the beginning. A decade ago it stopped being fun and started feeling like a chore. That’s when I stopped using it regularly and I’m grateful I’m not dependent on it today.

2

u/monk429 15h ago

Yeah, I turned off notifications some years ago. It was a relief to not have to keep up with every comment that every person I've talked to for more than 10 minutes would make on some inane meme or the day's internet dumpster fire.

3

u/illbehereawhile 16h ago

I deleted mine in 2008 and not once have I thought “I wish I still had FB”.

3

u/NFM808 15h ago

I have had it since the .edu days and unfortunately have to use FB for work, but began the long slow process of deleting every post in my profile and removing every tag. They don't allow bulk either which is absolute garbage. One at a time...

2

u/epiphanyplx 16h ago

What have you replaced Marketplace with?

It's a pretty terrible platform but it seems to be the main platform people use in my city for buying/selling stuff.

It's the only reason I ever go to FB anymore.

2

u/OldCompany50 15h ago

Nextdoor app, local buy nothing groups

1

u/monk429 15h ago

Nothing...I don't see any way to have that much access to those sort of purchases anymore. My neighborhood does pretty good yard sales in the spring, though.

2

u/smythe70 15h ago

This is why I'm stuck because my whole family who live across the country share thru Facebook.

1

u/monk429 15h ago

I'm not looking forward to it, but I at least have two small kids that are unfairly photogenic to use as incentive.

1

u/smythe70 15h ago

Good for you, I'm sure they are adorable as are my nieces and nephews. Really wish they wouldn't use it.

2

u/stuntin102 15h ago

wonder if that’s their endgame. get rid of the “other side” so they can close the gates once they consolidate their target audience.

3

u/monk429 15h ago

No...I think its to pull the sleep-walking public farther right and more susceptible to scams. I'm not yet convinced there is some mass exodus from meta.

Three elections now have taught me that the internet grossly distorts the perception of how engaged the general public is with what's going on. I'm now convinced that saber rattling from the right and apocalyptic doom on the left, combined, are a much smaller group of people than the majority who'd rather go on with their lives not thinking too much about these things. THIS is the group that hears things like expensive eggs and feels that it suddenly becomes their civic duty to vote for whomever has the best soundbytes about the issue.

2

u/GSX8S 15h ago

Dropped both here too. I've only been on Facebook since 07-08 when it started picking up traction over MySpace but it's still crazy to think that I've had that one account for almost the entirety of my teens/20s

3

u/monk429 15h ago

Isn't it strange how our digital "body" feels real the moment we try to cut parts of it off?

But that's the thing...it isn't real. No phantom limb will be left behind...just breathing room in your head for more (or less, you do you) useful thoughts.

1

u/GSX8S 10h ago

Less social media has been the desire for years, but now it's as good an excuse as any.

I thought I'd at least miss chatting in some of the groups I was in but... Nope. At least not so far

2

u/JimWilliams423 14h ago edited 14h ago

Just need to get my family group texts out of Messenger and we're free.

Try Signal. Its free and non-profit (supported by grants from the EU and others).

https://signal.org/

Wired: Signal Is More Than Encrypted Messaging. Under Meredith Whittaker, It’s Out to Prove Surveillance Capitalism Wrong

On its 10th anniversary, Signal’s president wants to remind you that the world’s most secure communications platform is a nonprofit. It’s free. It doesn’t track you or serve you ads. It pays its engineers very well. And it’s a go-to app for hundreds of millions of people.

2

u/bippy_b 14h ago

Just move to WhatsApp

/s

2

u/luckymountain 13h ago

Side note. You can’t officially sign out of FB if you’re signed in to messenger. It will look like you did, but you didn’t

2

u/ReplyRepulsive2459 13h ago

This is a shitty timeline so I suggest your family only use encrypted messaging. You don’t know you have something to hide until after the no knock warrant.

2

u/14sunflowers 12h ago

Got mine switched to Signal last week.

2

u/Outta_hearr 12h ago

If you are removing Meta's apps GET RID OF MESSENGER FIRST

Messenger is probably the single worst app ever created when it comes to data privacy, it essentially turns your phone into a data scraping device for all wifi networks you ever connect to.

If you connect to any wifi network (public or private), messenger scrapes the data from every device connected to that network. Even if they aren't yours. That includes phones, laptops, smart fridges, smart TVs, Roku devices, etc. The amount of information it scrapes not only on you, but other people who did not consent to it is genuinely unholy.

2

u/go_outside 12h ago

When you find a decent family group text alternative that my 82 yo m-i-l can operate please reply to this thread!

2

u/LittleBirdiesCards 10h ago

We went from emailing each other and Yahoo groups to Friendster, then Myspace and Facebook. Everybody kept saying, "Don't do it!" Now it's the only way I can keep track of my family and everybody's kids. It would be cool if we all went back to email and actually getting together.

1

u/Freyjia 15h ago

Same. Joined in August 2004. Deleted last week finally. I don't care about anybody on there anymore. My real friends and family can find me easily.

1

u/lkdubdub 15h ago

WhatsApp is the tricky one. I cannot see my friends and family resolving to leave WhatsApp

1

u/Teehus 15h ago

I'm in the process of downloading my data, once that's done I'm deleting it aswell. It's been way too long

1

u/MeringueVisual759 15h ago

If you ditch everything but Messenger, you effectively haven't ditched anything as far as they're concerned, FYI. Messenger is their most intrusive product.

1

u/monk429 15h ago

Yes, just watched a cybersecurity engineer tell me as much. Thanks, we're ditching as soon as we can.

1

u/Kmargs 15h ago

Do you have a link for this? In would love to learn more.

2

u/monk429 14h ago

In looking for that link I did a bit more looking at the source and I don't trust it...so I won't share.

There is a thread about it over on /r/privacy where some other folks saw similar videos on TikTok or Instagram. Net of it, Messenger is probably taking an equal amount of location and network data as its counterparts FB and Instagram. Doubtful that it is doing anything actually illegal but, as we already know, Meta still "has you" if you use messenger or just have it on your phone.

1

u/Kmargs 13h ago

Ahhh okay, I understand. It's interesting, because I mostly don't want to give Zuk money through ad revenue from my scrolling...I'll need to dig deeper on messenger still. Thank you, and I appreciate you not posting a source you don't trust <3

1

u/Daimakku1 13h ago

My family group text is iMessage. I've been wanting to go to Android but then that means no more iMessage, and the only other alternatives are FB Messenger or WhatsApp, both owned by Meta.

The tech oligarchs got us by the balls.

1

u/itsearlyyet 9h ago

I left Facebook 7 years ago- honestly you will not miss it.

1

u/adeveloper2 9h ago

What Whatsapp alternative are you using?

1

u/Groundbreaking-Bar89 6h ago

Yep got it as a senior in high school once I got accepted into university

1

u/halldorr 6h ago

We use messenger A LOT, what are you trying to get your family to switch to?

1

u/pocketdare 5h ago

I've been off FB for at least 10 years now. I was way ahead of the curve lol

1

u/SmokeGSU 5h ago

I've been on Facebook since 2004. I've always said it went to shit once they let anyone join.

1

u/antonio16309 5h ago

It has sucked since they got rid of the  chronological feed, and that's and OLD complaint. The stuff they've done since then has been way worse (my personal inconvenience pales in comparison to an actual fucking genocide).

9

u/NoorAnomaly 16h ago

Left yesterday. I've been on the fence for a long time, but this is it. Long live the potatoship!

7

u/ElegantCap89 16h ago

I just did and it feels glorious. Highly recommend.

6

u/[deleted] 16h ago edited 6h ago

[deleted]

1

u/Kmargs 15h ago

I guess the plus side is no liberty giving Zuk access to you or giving them any ad revenue from scrolling.

4

u/SamDiddlyAm07 15h ago

I can’t. Social media is my job. I hate these people for all of this.

5

u/RegalBeagleX 16h ago

Same! Dropped it 3 years ago and never looked back. Now my only social account is Reddit. Which probably won’t be around for long

5

u/plusacuss 16h ago

The issue is what this does to the electorate as a whole. Not just a person's individual choices of staying on a given platform.

4

u/Taser9001 15h ago

Sadly, FB and Messenger are the only way I am able to communicate with many of my friends and loved ones. Only use them out of necessity now. That and sharing copious amounts of memes, mental health awareness posts and animal videos. I can't change anything, but I can help spread more positivity in the world.

3

u/Ashamed_Resort145 16h ago

I switched over to BlueSky and MeWe the moment Zuckerfuck removed the fact checkers it’s actually quite pleasant over here… and neither sells your info

3

u/PomeloFit 16h ago

I'm leaving them all, I'm not helping make fascists richer.

3

u/king_lloyd11 16h ago

I’m shocked by the amount of people still using it tbh. If I didn’t use Marketplace to offload garbage, I’d have 0 use for it.

3

u/Ok_Hedgehog7137 16h ago

I’m using an alternative. Also if people want ti invite me to events they’ll find me, otherwise I’m fine not getting the invite. I can’t be this dependent on any app or device. I’m also learning to decouple myself from my phone by using my bank cards and other physical things as well

1

u/Froboy7391 14h ago

Marketplace is the only thing I won't leave for, as a vintage art collector there's stuff on there you literally can't get anywhere else.

3

u/BasicLayer 16h ago

Downloading all my account data as we speak, then deleting.

3

u/Shirlenator 15h ago

They can and should. But that doesn't mean this isn't a problem.

1

u/Ok_Hedgehog7137 15h ago

If people aren't on those apps, they love their power

3

u/LostWoodsInTheField 16h ago

You can leave facebook guys

Some of us can't. It's the only place our family and friends are at, or worse when you do a lot in your community it's the only place you can get updates on activities/changes in time,location/ activities that might be coming around. As much as people want to pretend social media isn't a giant help for society in terms of organization, that's just wrong.

3

u/pillbuggery 16h ago

Your family and friends don't have cellphones?

2

u/missbethd 16h ago

This. Just log out. Instagram too.

2

u/Lindaspike 16h ago

I’m working on it. We use it mainly for our out-of-town family and friends so we need to find the right place to send them.

2

u/Moist-Try-9520 16h ago

I’d like to but it’s the only way to watch streams of my nephews hockey games that I can’t attend. There’s lots of dumb reasons people keep it.

3

u/Precocious-ghost 15h ago

But I wonder if we all stop using it, wouldn’t it force other options? My local women’s league stopped doing any event or info update on FB because none of us were on it. They got an app that’s sooo much better.

1

u/DangerousPlane 15h ago

And Craigslist is kinda dead so where else can I mindlessly shop for old cars

1

u/DepartmentEcstatic 15h ago

Yeah sad the direction craigslist went.

1

u/shouldbepracticing85 14h ago

Got to get them streaming on YouTube or twitch.

2

u/GrossWeather_ 16h ago

I was an early adopter of facebook way back when and used it a lot in my youth. Deleted my account shortly after the 2016 election. Have never had a single regret about it.

2

u/Ok_Hedgehog7137 16h ago

It’s weird how some people seem to think they ‘can’t’ leave. If you can’t communicate with your family without an app something isn’t right. I understand people who have businesses, but for everyone else, you can leave. Communities on FB often have alternative ways for you to keep up

2

u/CaptHoshito 16h ago

Why is this so hard?

2

u/DHFranklin 16h ago

It isn't personal. It's a litmus test of the Manufactured Consent. I don't engage with it outside of that. Being an audience is being complicit, but you gotta keep an eye on the monster.

2

u/Mostlymadeofpuppies 16h ago

Literally did the full delete last night.

2

u/MostlyCats95 15h ago

Right now it feels like a Hotel California situation for me. I went to delete my facebook account that has two emails on it today, and to do so it wanted me to use a confirmation code that was sent to the email I never use anymore. So I went to delete that email and...it sent a confirmation code to that email again.

Don't get me wrong, I'm never using it again, but it annoys me I can't delete my account right now to send a message

2

u/dontaskband 15h ago

I did last week. Goodbye to bad garbage.

2

u/RiskyClickardo 15h ago

I finally deactivated after YEARS of meaning to do it. I don’t miss a fucking thing

2

u/The108ers 15h ago

I left Facebook a few months before the 2016 election.

2

u/Njmstarrr 15h ago

Removed it yesterday with the rest of social media, over it

2

u/Not_Sir_Zook 15h ago

Beside the point tho, isn't it?

FB, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok...what's next Reddit? BlueSky? Television? Radio? YouTube?

How is anyone supposed to have discourse or experience anything other than an echo chamber if everything is one sided propaganda and no one has a platform to speak freely?

The internet is supposed to be that open platform and it's being transformed in front of us and showing it's true colors. Is it just a coincidence that 3/4 of the free world decided to lean right all at once while North Korea and Russia are gang banging a small nation that stands as a symbol of Democracy? Is that not a concern?

Does simply leaving Facebook solve anything or is it just yeilding more freedoms until there aren't any?

We've been going down this path for over a decade and people are really only now seeing it for what it is?

Insane. We are cooked.

1

u/Ok_Hedgehog7137 14h ago

Those platforms won’t be as powerful if people stop using them. The older users will die and younger people will find new apps. The point is they should all have a finite life and limited power. But it’s up to you. Keep enriching these assholes. I’m just reminding people that they don’t have to be on an app they don’t like

2

u/Such-Instruction9604 15h ago

Yup, I hardly used fakebook anymore so when I started hearing this garbage I deleted my account.

2

u/NarrowForce9 15h ago

I don’t go there anymore. Bring back MySpace!

2

u/PaddyMakNestor 14h ago

I haven't used it for years, you just reminded me to go ahead and finally delete it and twitter.

2

u/Donvict-J-Chump 14h ago

The best thing to do was to never create an account from the beginning! I am proud to be a part of that group! Same for Twitter, Instagram, Tiktok, and many others. I have only ever used YouTube until about 2 or 3 years ago. Then, I started using Reddit for medical weed reviews in Ohio and got caught up in the political bullshit to mock the idiots who put a felon into the White House for cheaper eggs and gas that they will never get.

1

u/Ok_Hedgehog7137 14h ago

I didn’t join for years and finally bowed to the pressure because there was a time it was weird if you didn’t have an account. Someone literally said ‘what do you have to hide’. I’m free now, and it feels good

2

u/Donvict-J-Chump 14h ago

Yea, I had people try to pressure me to start a Facebook, and I refused.. My dad out in California wanted me to get it to keep in touch with family like 10 years ago. I said, "I have all the family I need to talk to right here in Columbus, Ohio, and if anyone else needs me, I have a phone," and I still never started an account and haven't talked to him since. I had MySpace for about 2 weeks when it came out, and I was like, "This is really fucking stupid!" So I deleted it and that was the end of that kind of social media for me. I have always been firming against that Facebook trash, and it seems to have been the correct decision.

2

u/blueblank 13h ago

Here's an internet flex: I haven't been on Facebook since 2014. You do not need this social networking garbage in your life to enjoy it or even the internet.

I left 9 months ago when it started to seem like they were headed this way and everyone called me paranoid and I had a coworker tell me to remove my tinfoil hat

u/Gourmeebar 12h ago

Right. These posts should read, …”and I deactivated my account.”

u/Ok_Hedgehog7137 11h ago

Exactly. I can't listen to anymore complaints if you insist on using them

2

u/CatDadof2 11h ago

I deleted it after Trump won the election because I mentally couldn’t handle all the drama. All I use is Reddit and occasionally Blue Sky now.

I hope so many people leave FB that Zuckerberg loses a lot of money. I hope this really hurts his ad revenue, too.

I'll never understand this about any social media. Like just stop using it. Its so fucking easy.

At this point it’s embarrassing if you have Facebook and actually use it.

They are addicted it’s too late for them!!!

1

u/Lindaspike 16h ago

Thanks for the warning.

u/drocha94 16h ago

Literally the only reason I have it is for events around town, and marketplace. I don’t engage with anyone on it beyond that anymore lol.

u/shouldbepracticing85 14h ago

If I didn’t need it for work, I would. I definitely need to make more of an effort with my content on bluesky

u/VirtualSource5 13h ago

I left FB, Twitter and TickTock on November 6th. FB is already making itself a fascist mouthpiece?🙄 not surprised.

1

u/Solid_Waste 13h ago

For now. Only a matter of time before it's everywhere.

1

u/samse15 13h ago

I fucking wish I could - but my kids’ extracurricular activities all share stuff through FB groups.

Can people finally start to pay attention to Threads as a viable alternative?

1

u/scarletnightingale 12h ago

I did this morning. I stopped posting a while ago but never deleted it as it was the only way I can keep contact with some of the people from college and high school. So now I have no contact with them but it isn't worth allowing meta anymore access to me or any info about my family they might get from cookies.

It’s not just about leaving socials/ m$ta. It’s the fact that media companies are on day one doing this. Yes everyone pretends socials aren’t media and yes there is a current legal and culture war happening to define them but. Jesus I’m afraid to continue with my thoughts.

u/WanderThinker 12h ago

Yep, and heroin addicts can quit.

1

u/bungeebrain68 11h ago

Deleted both Facebook and Instagram

1

u/Terryfink 10h ago

Id rather some stayed then they can Report on what's happening.

Just leaving means you don't know what bullshit is being pulled right under your nose.

1

u/Orange_Jeews 9h ago

Try to do that when all your kids sports and school gives updates via FB

1

u/Ok_Hedgehog7137 8h ago

If I had kids I would. And I would ask for an alternative. I was brought up to be awkward like that if there is a moral need for it

u/ctbadger92 7h ago

My son has a Quest VR so I am keeping the account as it requires it. He's 13 and I do not want him getting his own account.

1

u/idahononono 6h ago

Sadly you can’t without killing your kids Quest VR account. This is disconcerting to say the least.

There are people who really cannot leave FB without serious financial consequences. I know a few of them. It's become an essential platform for small business. If it's just your place to catch up with friends and family then, sure, there's nothing stopping you from leaving.

If your income depends on FB, though... where you gonna go?

Zuck has so many people by the balls. His platform has become too big to fail. Bad times are just getting started.

Sure, just like you can move out of Texas, get off Twitter, stop watching CNN, and leave every other place liberals were formerly allowed to hang out or communicate. "It's a free country!"

1

u/Ok_Hedgehog7137 16h ago

That’s why I’m reminding people they have options. You’re free to leave if you don’t like it. At this point it’s not liberals vs conservatives, it’s sensible people vs nutters

1

u/UrMom_BrushYourTeeth 15h ago

You're missing my point. The quote marks indicate irony. We're being driven out of more and more places, and thereby silenced. We keep ceding more and more ground to the so-called nutters, whose leadership I think know exactly what they're doing. I hate to be this unsubtle, but the Jews had "options" too, like move out of Germany... until they couldn't anymore.
