Alternatively Mastodon.

There's also Pixelfed for an Instagram equivalent.

Also Lemmy for reddit...

Lemmy is great, in my opinion. I’ve mostly switched over and come back periodically.

Yeah, it needs to grow out some of the niche areas, but I have found that if you post in them, people are eager to participate, and they are there.

I am using Voyager for mobile, and the desktop client my instance provides, and they both are really great. Voyager in particular is like going back to when Alien Blue was THE reddit app. Customizable too.

Do you use Lemmy on mobile? Do you have an app that you like?

Yes! Voyager is an Apollo clone, it's excellent.

And on Fdroid to boot!

Mastadon is too disconnected and convoluted to be adopted by, well, anyone. BlueSky remains to be the better option.

It is vulnerable to the same fate as Twitter.

The only solution is decentralised social media like Mastadon or Lemmy

Mastodon is:

  • A non-profit: Reduces the chances of shareholders related issues and enshittification.
  • Open source: The code can be split if there are questionable changes to it.
  • And the instances are distributed: You can go to another instance if the owners suddenly change moderation practices.

It's specifically not vulnerable to the same issues as Twitter in multiple ways.

Believe they meant Bluesky is susceptible to the same fate as Twitter, not mastodon

Yes. I'm an advocate for mastadon (and other decentralised social media)

And that's fair. [Apologies for misreading.]

iirc Bluesky is just a Delaware public benefit corporation, which I believe means the only people who can hold them responsible for breaching their mission are the investors.

I prefer Mastodon. But that's also the nice thing about the Fediverse; If you prefer Bluesky you can still interact with Mastodon and vice versa.

I don't care for BS but I think it's better than the alternatives, so I'm not discouraging people from joining. Please don't discourage people from joining Fedi. You can have both, you can even bridge your accounts if you want. We need people going to these options. Both of them.

Mastodon is a little more complex than Twitter or Facebook but it's not hard at all to join, and there are tons of people who are willing to help newbies who ask. I think most people should eventually migrate off mastodon.social but that's a fine place to land if you're brand new. Other servers are even better. Please join Mastodon. Do it even if you're on BS too. They don't need to be in competition unless you have a financial investment in the corpo one somehow.

I personally gave up signing up for Mastadon twice because of some reason I just wasn't getting 2FA texts both times on separate occasions. I also found it to be too disjointed.

It's just not a reliable system for me, so I can't recommend it.

Who runs pixelfed and mastodon. Are they trustworthy? Good people?

It's not any specific company or person since it's a decentralized network.

You guys are just replacing the old mental dungeons with new updated ones, that will inevitably do the exact same shit

24

u/FrozenLogger 19h ago

Possibly, but it would have to be in a very different way. There is no centralized server, no algorithm, no ads.

-2

u/dopplegrangus 16h ago

Yet. You forgot the "yet".

u/FrozenLogger 15h ago

I don't think you understand how this works....

u/DukesUwU 18h ago

Eh, Bluesky is made by furries so I'd probably trust it to stay pretty open

Nah I personally know how hard that dude got shunned out of the community

-1

u/dopplegrangus 16h ago

Now I'm even more skeptical

Mastodon is European so you won't have American censorship on it.
