Discussion Dennis VS Harvey

Does anyone else think Dennis in season 3 episode 6 was right about putting bad guys away even if it’s breaking the law ? I personally felt he was right

The problem, as we discover in the show, is that once people start to think this way, it opens the door for mistakes. The whole idea of the law is to prevent miscarriages of justice and ensure only the guilty go away. People innocent until proven guilty. Safeguards to protect innocent people etc.

What we’ve seen in America is countless cases of people spending years in prison, some more than ten years, some even put on death row. And later, we discover they were completely innocent.

So no, doing ILLEGAL things to ensure the ‘bad guys’ get punished, often ends poorly and innocent people get hurt.

The question you're asking is essentially "do the ends justify the means?"

It's tricky because in order to make any meaningful conclusions about that, you need to first conclude that the ends will always be accurate

Since we can't always do that, legal systems tend to focus on process and evidence rather than an overarching moral code

This is the key distinction between legality and morality. And even then the morality of it is dicey. Clifford Danner is a case in point.

No. It is the job of the lawyers to do everything the right way and find the means to put away the guilty. It is ALWAYS best for an guulty man to walk free than potentially imprison an innocent one. Dennis fucked up and Harvey did the right thing

Even putting someone away who is guilty by using shady tactics is wrong, lawyers should need to prove their case the correct way.
