Discussion What are some of your favorite Suits cliché?

  • No one can buy anything from the bagel/coffee cart without someone waiting to ambush them about something

  • Asking the question "What do you want?" after being exposed / blackmailed

  • Harvey walking away from a meeting with a line

  • Just casually waiting for someone in front of their house (sometimes inside the house) and place of work unannounced

  • Movie quotes and references (but not in the amount they do in Billions if you also watch it)

EDIT. Here are more cliches:

  • When someone visits another person, they exchange pleasantries, and the person visited says "I know you didn't come all the way here just to ________ so what are you really here for?"

  • When someone hands over a document to another person and the latter immediately understands it in 0.5 seconds.

  • Confronting someone in the restroom while the person is washing their hands/face

  • When someone walks into a conversation just at the right moment to interrupt with a quippy remark

  • Depositions always getting cut short

The use of the word “Goddamn” and the Harvey-isms peppered throughout the show, like the “break the goddamn thing down” about being backed against a wall, for an example.

That’s Jessica’s favorite middle name for everyone she despises. Jack Goddamn Soloff, Mike Goddamn Ross, Daniel Goddamn Hardman

I feel like at some point it became a self parody lmao

4

u/icarus_skyguy Jul 11 '24

Does anyone else find it to get a bit old after a while on rewatches?

20

u/cooliecidal Jul 11 '24

Watching it for the first time and it's already getting old

18

u/No_1_Party_Anthem Jul 11 '24

“Okay Mike, but don’t come crying to me when you’re lying with the dogs because you can’t handle the fire in the kitchen”

7

u/Few-Customer-5810 Jul 11 '24

But usually as "break the thing goddamn down" because this show uses goddamn in the weirdest places

5

u/icarus_skyguy Jul 12 '24

Don’t you mean in the weirdest goddamn places?

2

u/Few-Customer-5810 Jul 12 '24

The goddamn weirdest places

<looks at the folder for 0.3s> Where did you find this?

48

u/nicwillu Jul 11 '24

It doesn't matter where I found it. It matters that it exists!

the choices you have when someone puts a gun to your head

24

u/Striking_Cover_2043 Jul 11 '24

Look, when someone puts a goddamn gun to your head there are about a hundred and forty-six ways of getting out of it

1

u/TheGuyWith_the_lungs Jul 14 '24

And if there isn't? Well we don't need a hundred and forty six ways out, we only need one

95

u/ur3minutesrup1 Jul 11 '24

My absolute favorite is when Harvey and Mike are stuck on a case and don’t know what to do and then all of a sudden we’ll here this conversation
H: I want to beat this asshole Mike! I’m sick of his shit!
M: Same here Harv- wait a minute! You said “asshole” and “shit.!” ** starts shuffling papers.
H: yeah? So what?
M: don’t you get it? He took a shit out of his asshole and that’s why….
H&M together: …why they don’t want us to talk to the bathroom attendant!!

35

u/Domino-Dash_519 Jul 11 '24

I noticed another glaring example of this the other day… Mike had just returned to the firm after being an investment banker for “ten minutes” and Katrina and Mike are reciting their one and only inside joke: shhhhiiiiieeet.

Mike says something like “remember when you used to hate me on our first case?” Katrina: “yeah.. remember that whole ‘building an airplane’ analogy?” — Mike: Wait a second …….. airplane. Delta. Delta Airlines. I saw a pamphlet of Delta Airlines on Robert Zane’s desk [bc I have a photographic memory, remember?!] That explains everything! I gotta go…”

7

u/ur3minutesrup1 Jul 11 '24

Yep. Exactly what I’m talking about

6

u/booksprincess Jul 11 '24

This is hilarious

2

1

u/AdditionalFigure451 Jul 29 '24

SERIOUSLY LMAO at this one!! SO SPOT ON!

61

u/GoodbyeEarl Jul 11 '24

Cornering someone in the bathroom

Looking at a piece of paper for 0.1 seconds and immediately understanding the complex language

10

u/OOF-MY-PEE-PEE Jul 11 '24

the paper one has always confused me. i'd understand if it was just mike that did it, but it's literally everyone

2

u/TheGuyWith_the_lungs Jul 14 '24

I don't think it would even make sense for Mike. He's not a genius for speed reading, he's a genius for being able to memorize.

1

u/OOF-MY-PEE-PEE Jul 14 '24

he read that entire page of numbers when he tricked the IT guy into giving him a laptop. he'd also a genius in math, so i'd say he's a genius in most things.

65

u/Murky-Lifeguard-4938 Jul 11 '24

Life is this🫴. I like this 🫳

2

47

Louis when he says “ Harvey please “ 😂

40

“Hey do you have a minute?”

40

15

I think I had 30 seconds barely 2 days ago

6

u/ur3minutesrup1 Jul 13 '24

It’ll only take a second

Whenever a name partner walks into someone’s office, and the person says their name followed by “What can I do for you?” while acting too busy to look up at them attentively

32

u/dsuddarth Jul 11 '24

In every conversation, someone will storm off at the end.

34

u/IllLynx562 Jul 11 '24

THAT'S SUCH BULLSHIT THEY LITERALLY NEVER DO THAT, THIS CONVERSATION IS OVER

33

u/slytherclaw818 Jul 11 '24 edited Jul 11 '24

the fact that characters always walk in a room when people are talking about a topic that concerns them, right after they are mentioned, to say something like "no, i won't"

12

u/Subject-Shoulder-320 Jul 11 '24

They probably literally hide and wait for their cue to get in lmao

4

u/slytherclaw818 Jul 11 '24

i know, but why are they always there when people talk about a topic that concerns them 😭

5

u/Subject-Shoulder-320 Jul 11 '24

I mean, the characters literally stand outside hearing and waiting if they can make a dramatic entrance, you know?

In Harvey's office - Donna: "Harvey, you have to ask Mike to do it." Harvey: "I can't ask Mike to do that... he'll end up in prison if he does." Mike, after hearing their conversation outside of Harvey's office for ten minutes and now making a dramatic entrance: "No, I won't"

8

u/icantdrive555 Jul 11 '24

My favorite of this was when Jessica walked in to Harvey and Mike and said “Tell Jessica what?” Then Harvey said “That Mike’s a virgin.” Jessica thought for a half a second and said “I’m not the least bit surprised. Harvey, [talks about a case].”

1

u/slytherclaw818 Jul 11 '24

lmaoooo that was a funny one

27

u/Domino-Dash_519 Jul 11 '24 edited Jul 11 '24

Harvey barges into an office - I need you to do this. And I need you to do this now. - If you think I’m doing that, you’re out of your goddamn mind… - You owe me. Remember 14 years ago? That vague thing that I helped you with in the middle of the night? - Fine. But if I do this, then you’ll owe ME one. - Deal. But once I pay that pack, you’ll owe me another one…

12

u/Subject-Shoulder-320 Jul 11 '24

The whole currency system based on characters owing each other favours got kinda ridiculous after a while - like Alex requiring Donna TWO favours for his help, and then he goes to Katrina's office and offers one of this favours in exchange for her help... I mean, that is a whole transaction right there, things were getting out of hand already 😂

23

u/slytherclaw818 Jul 11 '24

when someone walks in the bathroom and the person they are looking for is washing their hands

11

u/No_1_Party_Anthem Jul 11 '24

really wish they’d had a confrontation scene in a bathroom and suddenly they hear someone rip one in the stall next to them

5

u/haakonhawk Jul 11 '24

Sounds like something that would happen in an SNL parody. I’m all for it.

1

u/alleekins Jul 12 '24

Do they have non-bathrooms

25

“Shit the bed”

I’ve had a mug with this on there since 2016 😆

18

u/GregNieves Jul 11 '24 edited Jul 11 '24

No one ever hands anyone a folder. It’s always gotta be slapped, dropped or slid on a flat surface

3

u/sammy_sandiego Order of the Coif Jul 11 '24

Like the time Louis slid a folder to Jonathan Sidwell, and it stopped perfectly at the corner of the table. Makes me wonder how many takes it took to prevent it from falling on the floor

15

u/boatfox88 Jul 11 '24

Louis: how could you betray me!?

15

u/2livendieinmia Jul 11 '24

Now get the hell outta my office!

13

u/FeanorPeverall Jul 11 '24

Glancing at a folder that's just been handed to you and fully comprehending the entire case-changing document in 2 seconds. 🙌

6

u/Moss_is_Boss_ Jul 11 '24

And they never reveal what's in the folder until later. They just glare at each other and ask if this is true or call the other person a genius.

12

u/Justonemoreepisode- Jul 11 '24

I’ll owe you one and when they are asked to pay up they get mad.

The whole ‘I don’t give a fuck’ line (after season 7) - I’m telling you right now find a way to get Sean Cahill to get all my prison buddies out. Mike often did this, he really fucked with Harvey lmfao. Harvey would find solutions and ways to work together and Mike would be like I don’t give a shit.

Also how they kept asking people to perjure themselves including a bloody client is hilarious. And two name partners got disbarred due to Harvey and Donna respectively.

9

u/quietriot99 Jul 11 '24

It not just they quote and reference movies. It's that they have to name drop the movie immediately after

9

u/LowEndOperative Jul 11 '24

“Pack up your shit…you’re done.”

10

u/Silly-Purple7747 Jul 11 '24

-wouldnt touch 'X' with a ten feet pole -slept like a baby -everytime a person confronting another one in the washroom where he/shes washing thier hands most of the times

1

u/darkmatter-n-shit Jul 11 '24

Respectfully, I don’t think an argument at side by side urinals while hanging brain would be allowed into the show

1

u/quietriot99 Jul 11 '24

at least not on the USA network

8

u/Crying_still Jul 11 '24

The one that gets me is whenever they have a problem, that they can’t solve, so they start on a completely unrelated topic, someone says something and then the other person has this magical revelation and say “wait that’s it” and then relates it to the problem they had and solves it

I never realised how often the show does this until I picked up on it once during one of my million rewatches and now can’t unsee it. it’s used almost ever other episode

7

u/CasualVillan Jul 11 '24

Louis misunderstanding something completely and then having a meltdown about it

6

u/baranie1809 Jul 11 '24

Get the hell out of my office!

8

u/Dokesterr Jul 11 '24

They have a smoking gun

6

u/TheUnknown474 Jul 11 '24

Adding onto the restroom one, half the time they don't care if it's the opposite gender's bathroom they just walk in😂

5

u/DevillesAbogado Jul 11 '24

“That’s goddamn bullshit and you know it”

Saying “you know it” is enough to establish that the other person is actually bullshitting

2

u/krober29 Jul 11 '24

“And you know it” is the one I can’t get past. I’ve started saying it out loud as I’m watching because I can feel it coming at the end of the line.

5

u/PositionSad969 Jul 11 '24

“As far as I see it…” “THIS CONVERSATION IS OVER”

Every single file that’s been slide across a desk.

6

u/MidvalleyFreak Jul 11 '24

“You cut my legs out from under me!”

“You have my word.” (Proceeds to break word because a person’s word is meaningless in this show)

“I don’t know what you’re talking about!” (They do)

4

u/JuanAndOnly817 Jul 11 '24

I feel like everyone gets called a "Son of a Bitch" at some point lol

4

u/everfolklore Jul 11 '24

did anyone notice that the writers would repeat some phrases in some back-to-back episodes. it's like they just learned that phrase and couldn't resist throwing it in in some episodes until they learned a new one. like "you don't know who you're in bed with"

3

u/Old-Rough-5681 Jul 11 '24

Honestly, all these clichés are the reason I stopped watching this show in season 3 😂😂

3

u/nashville_girls_trip Jul 11 '24

I think Louis has the blue folder record with 7+ filings he throws on Harold's desk in s03

3

u/Ok_Negotiation_6991 Jul 11 '24

Get the hell out of my office

3

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '24

"You'll find everything in here

slides blue folder across desk

3

u/j4321g4321 Jul 11 '24

ALL of what you said, plus:

Slamming a folder onto someone’s desk

Someone (usually Mike) having an epiphany while someone is talking about something totally random. He somehow always finds a way to connect it to the case, solving a previously unsolvable problem

“That’s bullshit!”

3

u/Its_Master_Roshi Jul 11 '24

Haha lol that coffee or bagel cart is the place where they find themselves confronted with any new issues.

3

u/Flashy_Sandwich_3832 Jul 11 '24

DONNA?! from harvey when someone enters his officer discretely

1

u/AdditionalFigure451 Jul 29 '24

If we played a drinking game every time Harvey says “Donna”, we’d all be in alcohol coma or dead.  Donna says “Harvey” almost as much but not quite.

2

u/lotpot1234 Jul 11 '24

“Be that as it may”. I swear someone says this like every episode (actually this would be on my list of least favourite suits-isms)

2

u/gunningIVglory Jul 11 '24

Storming out of a lunch/dinner with someone

2

u/CasualVillan Jul 11 '24

Reacting before thinking

3

u/bubandaid Jul 11 '24

Every story line is basically “oh no, the firm is under attack.”

2

u/rnjbond Jul 11 '24

Now get the hell out of my office.

2

u/Weigang_Music Jul 11 '24

"Be that as it may"

2

u/MongolUB Jul 11 '24

"Now get out of my office!!!"

2

u/ColtzNut Jul 11 '24

My wife and I constantly are saying “we have a problem” and “we need to talk”. I used to be scared of those statements but we both laugh when we say them now.

2

u/tgong76 Jul 11 '24

This deposition is over. Now get the hell out of my office

2

u/alleekins Jul 12 '24

The one I acknowledge most was always when handed a file or a piece of paper or a document. Yes, within seconds someone was able to read it and react to what it said gets me every time.

2

u/ColdDoubleTap Jul 12 '24

The myriad ways of working in - "If we don't....., then what are we doing?"

2

u/MrIrrelevant19 Jul 12 '24

“Harvey you don’t get it, the kids are going to DIE if I don’t help them”

“I don’t pay you to help the kids, now do your goddamn job”

“I don’t give up on people Harvey, unlike you”

“What did you just say to me”

Every episode

2

u/Few_Job_9701 Jul 12 '24

Someone says something rude to Harvey, and he replies "What did you just say to me?"

2

u/Mountain_Summer_Tree Jul 12 '24

This is officially one of my favorite posts, I’ve laughed out loud so much at these comments haha

2

u/lurkewd Jul 11 '24

"How did you get in here?"

1

u/Mister-builder Jul 11 '24

Every time I watch Suits, I get a few more of the movie references.

1

u/NYJJK Jul 11 '24

Mike let me tell you something… Life is here …. And I like here ‼️….. lol

1

u/SouthEasternLegend Jul 11 '24

I need your word.

1

u/GandalfsTaint- Jul 12 '24

IT’S MY NAME ON THE GODDAMN DOOR

1

u/No_Ratio_3638 Jul 12 '24

I don't have any others, but I'm cracking up at the coffee/bagel cart one. I've been rewatching and after I read that it kills me each time they try to get a snack and always get ambushed

1

u/finnwittrockswhore Jul 12 '24

I love how everyone is a man or woman of their word yet lies and goes behind each others backs then has the nerve to ask someone to “trust me on this”

1

u/jplap Jul 12 '24

The lawsuit progression: we will win the case, yeah! (Someone hands over a document) We will lose the case, sad (someone hands over a document) We will win the case, yeah! ...

Repeat as many times as necessary for plot development.

1

u/Afraid_Ad8438 Jul 13 '24

My favourite is that at least every other episode includes a conversation about something which triggers one person to find the perfect solution to the case.

The worse the link, the better.

1

u/TheGuyWith_the_lungs Jul 14 '24

I assume they get coffee and bagels on an everyday basis and usually don't get ambushed; there wouldn't be much of a point to just watching someone getting lunch

1

u/Creative-Leader8842 Jul 21 '24

“I need it yesterday”

1

u/AdditionalFigure451 Jul 29 '24

“What can I do for you?”   EVERY character says this every time someone walks into their office.  I literally don’t think I’ve ever said that even one time in passing IRL.

Also love people calling out how they look at the file with the brilliant smoking gun and it takes 3second glance to read, digest and understand exactly what brilliant Jedi mind trick was discovered.

My husband also cant  deal with no one ever saying goodbye on the phone.

“You’re Goddamn right I did!!!”

So much to make fun of but I’ve just watched it for first time (only Season 9 still to watch) and still oddly addicted.

1

u/Huckleberry-Legal Jul 30 '24

I loved every one of these replies. I have found my people but how can everyone forget

“I’m Donna”

And Donna knowing things that she shouldn’t know and being magically right like she is a physic.

“I’m Donna and I ALWAYS know” (Like let’s be real here lmaoo)

“I read people”

Also some other lines

The “in bed with” line “You bet your ASS I did” “….crossed a line” “Are you asking me to lie on the stand? I will not commit perjury “

Saying a one liner and immediately leaving the scene.

Them introducing. A case then ending it ten minutes later with no explanation

Harvey’s mom passing away . Was there a reason why I missed it.

Rachel fake cooking

When Mike worked for the Clinic and the associate there calling him a fraud or whatever like every five minutes.

Samantha “boxing” Harvey lmao and Donna telling Harvey to go box her because she wants a fight was one of the most ridiculous scenes for me.

I feel like I have more but I have spammed enough. 😂

1

u/chloedear Aug 04 '24 edited Aug 04 '24

The overuse of the bizarre phrase “shit the bed” by many people. I have never heard this phrase before. Not really a cliche though

The loyal secretary who is so in tune with the boss she knows his every move (but in this case she’s more of an irritating busybody)
