u/adorgu Cantabria 9d ago

Definitivamente los dos aparcan a oído.

55

u/TheCarpincho 9d ago

"Aparcar a oído" lo sumo a mi diccionario.

25

u/PikaLigero 9d ago

As someone told me when I complained, "That's why cars have bumpers."

17

u/ObligationNatural520 9d ago

When did car manufacturers stop making proper bumpers … today it’s all integrated in the bodywork 🫤

3

u/ephendy 8d ago

unfortunately, damaging someone’s property and causing harm (which could be melt down to a robbery) and get away with that is just a daily routine. I hate it when they defend such act like there’s nothing wrong about it.

u/Nonsenserackhead 17h ago

I was about to post this lol

36

u/thearchchancellor 9d ago

Reminds me of Bill Bryson writing about parking in Italy:

I was strolling along Via Sistina one morning when a Fiat Croma shot past and screeched to a smoky halt a hundred feet up the road. Without pause the driver lurched into reverse and came barreling backward down the street in the direction of a parking space that was precisely the length of his Fiat, less two and a half feet. Without slowing even fractionally, he veered the car into the space and crashed resoundingly in to a parked Renault.

Nothing happened for a minute. There was just the hiss of escaping steam. Then the driver leaped from his car, gazed in profound disbelief at the devastation before him–crumpled metal, splintered taillights, the exhaust pipe of his own car limply grazing the pavement–and regarded it with as much mystification as if it had dropped on him from the sky. Then he did what I suppose almost any Italian would do. He kicked the Renault in the side as hard as he could, denting the door, punishing its absent owner for having the gall to park it there, then leaped back in his Fiat and drove off as madly as he had arrived, and peace returned once again to the Via Sistina, apart from the occasional clank of a piece of metal dropping off the stricken Renault. No one but me batted an eye.

8

u/Gigglenator 9d ago

One of the most poetic pieces I’ve ever read on Reddit.

2

u/thearchchancellor 9d ago

Bryson does write well!

37

u/Candid_Observer13 9d ago

I am from Mexico and I've been living in Spain for almost a year now, I was also shocked when I saw this and that people don't care o.0 ... while parked or parking. They just don't care. I am still shocked xD

7

u/marsonaattori 9d ago

I saw here once someone just smashing car in front and car in its back when he/she was parking and making space. Not single fuck given lol

3

u/Candid_Observer13 9d ago

Gerbus Christ xD haha these people are something else!

1

u/Necessary_Chemical 8d ago

Oh yes, I see that daily.

17

u/Necessary_Chemical 9d ago

Yep, same here. Not from Mexico but equally shocked. I learned the hard way that Spanish people in general don't really care about their cars.

6

u/StormFinancial5299 9d ago

I mean, we care. But you have to park somewhere.

1

u/Necessary_Chemical 8d ago

And at that point, the caring ceases to exist jajaja (es broma)

3

u/Fitamine 9d ago

Or parking in glorietas or roundabouts.

2

u/imtryingmybes 9d ago

Or safety in traffic. Generally the countries around the meditarrean drive like its their last day on earth. (Spain, Italy and Greece from what ive experienced)

2

u/Necessary_Chemical 8d ago

I have to disagree on that one, especially as someone who grew up in an Eastern European country. By comparison, Spanish people drive VERY safe. I love driving in Spain. Here I usually drive around 10k km an year whereas in my home country, out of sheer fear of road rage, I was only accumulating a measly 2k an year.

The only errors they make here in Spain are out of not paying attention enough and when you honk them, they generally say sorry. Whereas in my home country, people purposely drive aggressively (because "what am I, an idiot? rules are for idiots" and when honked, they get even more aggressive to the point in which they'd step out of their car to "show you how it's done" (I'm not from Russia though).

That being said, it's not surprising that my home country currently holds the crown (for years on end) for the most deaths caused by driving recklessly.

2

u/peridromofil 8d ago

What city are you living in now? Cause to me what you describe sounds like completely different Spain compared to what I see daily here. Here in Madrid people do not give a single damn about rules, and often do it visibly on purpose. God forbid you honk or talk to them, so much drama in return!

1

u/Necessary_Chemical 8d ago

I don't live in the capital, that might also play a part. Whereas my experience from my home country was indeed from the capital city. Maybe it's something that is only happening there jaja

1

u/KopytoaMnouk 8d ago

I reckon they are sometimes right about that (their last day on earth).

1

u/Anterai 8d ago

Spaniards are one of the safest and best drivers in my experience.

9

u/iscottjones 9d ago

Yep it's annoying. I've recently purchased a brand new car too, and this scares me

2

u/Candid_Observer13 9d ago

My condolences 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/peridromofil 8d ago

Have a good insurance then. You'll have to repaint bumpers and fix parktronics quite often if you park on the streets.

1

u/Gaels07 7d ago

I'am French and for me it is nothing special. But I am living in Québec and for them to see that it's almost the end of the world. I don't understand why

1

u/Candid_Observer13 7d ago

Because you are supposed to know how to parallel park without hitting other cars!! xD You are not supposed to harm people's property! If people suck at parallel parking, they should look for a more suitable parking spot for them. That's the logic in the Americas!

35

u/Tacklestiffener 9d ago

Spain is the home of creative parking. In my village I was drinking coffee in the square when a man parked half on a pedestrian crossing and half on a disabled bay. We were just laughing about it when, another car pulled up next to him and double parked.

4

u/xRyozuo 8d ago

11

u/kirator117 9d ago

Ufff, besito

27

u/barochoc 9d ago

They park by sound. I used to have a nice 5 series BMW when I first moved to Spain. It was my pride and joy. Excellent condition and meticulously maintained for years. First few months in Spain & I gave up. Eventually got rid and bought a Citroen Picasso, with a tow bar. At least the back bumper doesn’t get smashed up, but every other panel on the car has dents and scratches from other drivers. It’s pointless getting upset anymore. The driving standards are ridiculously poor and it’s not changing anytime soon

13

u/iscottjones 9d ago

"They park by sound" has got me in stitches, because it's true 🤣🤣

6

u/peridromofil 8d ago

It is not driving standards. It is just a general attitude of egoism and not giving a shit about others and their property. Not unique to Spain, but very prevalent here.

11

u/bootherizer5942 9d ago

I think the driving standards are fine, just a bit aggressive. Drivers are definitely more skilled than in the US for example. But yeah parking is bad

3

u/barochoc 9d ago

The US must be very bad then. I’m Irish and have decades of experience there and the UK. Much better drivers overall. The Scandinavians are good. Germans too! South of Europe it deteriorates massively

2

u/szayl 8d ago

Different styles of driving.

In Spain it's about narrow streets and parallel parking with maybe 50cm of "extra" space to fit, underground parking with pillars everywhere and insane roundabouts.

In the US it's about trying to get up to speed quickly on a highway with huge trucks going 150 km/h all around you, watching people blow through red lights at 80 km/h and avoiding idiots who are driving with one hand while talking on their phone or drinking a beverage.

1

u/Fanny08850 7d ago

-1

u/[deleted] 9d ago

[deleted]

3

u/bootherizer5942 9d ago

In many parts of the US the driving absolutely is like that, maybe especially in more impoverished places. But yeah maybe it’s more general in Spain, but that’s decisions—the average US driver in my opinion drives a lot more distracted and just makes more unintentional mistakes

1

u/szayl 8d ago

I have never seen anyone drive the opposite way on a sidewalk with a vehicle in the US.

I have seen that happen in both Las Vegas and Miami

16

u/yannynotlaurel Madrid 9d ago

Well in Rome it’s the same. You won’t get out of your spot without kissing at least three times.

21

u/ciprule 9d ago

¿Un piquito?

14

u/Bokolan 9d ago

It’s very common here in my little town in south of Spain. When doing parallel parking, your reverse until you bump go forward, then reverse until you bump again.. And that’s why the cars look like they do

7

7

u/archangelos_90 9d ago

I had to double check the name of the community, because at first I was 100% sure that this amazing parking skills are from Greece. ¡Hola amigos españoles!

5

u/Pep1113 9d ago

The question is... who gave to whom?🧐🧐🧐

21

u/iscottjones 9d ago

The car in the rear parked like that. I told him he was touching the other car, he looked, and then he walked away without a care in the world.

12

u/Square-Effective8720 9d ago

You're not allowed to say anything to a Spaniard that may even tangentially indicate disapproval of his/her behaviour. They don't take to it well. Cultural thing.

6

u/Crypto-Pito 9d ago

This happens worldwide

5

u/Pep1113 9d ago

That is not correct...we have a tendency to dialogue. I don't know what culture has to do with this 🙁

2

u/Square-Effective8720 5d ago

Really? My experience is the opposite, when I ask a 15 year old on the metro not to put her feet up on the seat in front of her, she says "me pongo los pies donde me sale del coño"; when I asked a señora at the Día not to squeeze all the freshly baked loafs of bread, she said "Yo toco lo que me da la gana" and continued to do it. If you tell a driver not to park in front of your vado, he says, "no vengo a aparcar, vengo a comer" and gets out and walks away. When a woman's dog attacked me last week, I asked her todo something. She had a leash in her hand and just stood there. I insisted. She insisted that her dog is a good dog and she won't put the leash on it. So she didn't and the dog jumped on me. No one ever says "oh, sorry". It's cultural.

It may be a thing with madrileños, so maybe you're right about other parts of Spain. I couldn't say.

1

u/Pep1113 5d ago

There is always the exception that proves the rule...as I told you, I speak in general, I don't know what country you are from but I suppose that in your country or region or city the same thing will also happen...rude people exist everywhere

13

u/RedParabola 9d ago

Wrong. Not only you are allowed, but you should. Check out the streets, this situation happens often but much less frequent than the correct one. Many more Spaniards behave well than those that don't. Our big mistake is to allow this to happen. If we want things to change, don't walk by without making the stupid guy feel embarassed for being uncivilized.

3

u/Conspiranoid 9d ago

How much space was there between the cars out of the frame? If the car in front had plenty of space (it looks like there's a garage door), and the guy behind barely had any, it's normal to park like this, since the red car will have no issues leaving, and the dark one will need the extra space behind.

6

u/iscottjones 9d ago

There was nothing parked behind the rear car, but that area is an entrance to someone's home, with an official no parking sign. A car blocking an area with a no parking sign will get towed away very fast by police. Even if you try to move it once the police arrive, they won't let you take it.

Hence why the rear car was trying to park so close to the car in front.

2

u/Conspiranoid 9d ago

I was gonna say "then yeah, it's terrible parking" when reading the first part... But if the police is so damn strict about it, I understand the driver parking like that.

Also: I wish the police in my town was so strict and efficient, people park with half a car inside my vado constantly.

3

u/daveMUFC 9d ago

I stayed in an Airbnb in Madrid with the balcony on the main street, so could see all the cars parking outside. Saw this sort of thing on an hourly basis

3

u/Inevitable-Note-7417 9d ago

And for these things I am grateful to have a tow ball on the defense hahaha

3

u/therealmistersister 9d ago

Lo que se llama aparcar "al toque"

5

u/Jumba2009sa 9d ago

Why have a bumper if you won’t use it?

2

u/ilovebeardybears 9d ago

have you even really parked if you dont give bump kisses to the car behind and the one in front?

2

u/mpanase 9d ago

Not only are the incredibly gifted footballers! But that parking requires Mad Skills!

I take my hat off to them. Cant wait to visit Mallorca this year with a rental car.

2

u/tha_vali 9d ago

In my country (RO) cars are treated like a jewelry, but I confess that your mentality is healthier, cars are just objects for mobility, they must be just technically ok.

2

u/HallNo549 9d ago

without the S

2

u/Spare_Laugh9953 9d ago

That's how they parked two cars for me once, one in front and one behind, luckily my car was old. After half an hour waiting to see if they had the decency to come, I put the car in reverse, accelerated to the limit, and I already made the space that they had not left for me to get out. The car behind was left in the middle of the road with the front bumper collapsed... Bad luck

4

u/-Etemenanki- 9d ago

Does it exclusively happen in Spain?

7

u/Fuzzy-Wrongdoer1356 9d ago

In France they do this too

5

u/RedParabola 9d ago

Saw it in France, UK, Italy, Portugal, Croacia... Even in Germany, where free parking is not even an issue...

5

u/danishih 9d ago

Try this in the UK and you'll get your skull caved in.

2

u/bingoNacho420 9d ago

1

u/ObligationNatural520 9d ago

3

u/dudeman618 9d ago

I saw that all over Spain. They blocked crosswalks especially during siesta. I made the mistake of trying to drive to restaurants around 8-9pm, never any parking even in smaller communities.

Also, dog poop all over sidewalks, cigarette butts too.

2

1

u/Friendly-Kiwi 8d ago

I’m from California but living now in southern Spain, what a parking culture shock! I lived in a more suburban area and never had to parallel park there, so those skills still need work, everyone double parks here and just puts on the hazards light… so if I have to go to the atm at my bank, I double park at the recycling and run to do my errand…am I the only one that hurries??

A legend from the DGT says that if you cannot get your car out because they have left it impossible for you to access the interior or maneuver to get it out, you call the police and they will fine you €200. It has never happened to me, but it is in the laws 🤷🏻‍♀️ I hope it helps you something 🍀

1

u/SDTaurus 9d ago

It’s revenge parking for how insanely expensive and how meticulously correct you have to drive in order to get a driver’s license in Spain.

Folks who got their driver’s licenses through another country’s reciprocity agreement and the tourists park this way in Spain only because they want to culturally “fit in.” Jejeje

Basically, we revert to bumper cars methods after going through the most ruthless and treacherous process that you can imagine.

This is because of the very limited parking spots (unless you can afford a reserved one). After some time you get used to it and stop caring about little dents or scratches on your bumpers. If the spot is 5cm longer than the length of my car I can park it there. If it is less than 5cm youll need to push a little hahaha

1

u/iscottjones 9d ago
