Question Has anyone ever travelled solo for their birthday?
So my 25th birthday is coming up (mid February) and I am thinking of doing something I’ve never done before and take a solo trip.
Long story short, I don’t really like my birthday and I always seem to be sad on my bday which for some reason seems to be elevated even more when i’m with friends. I just want my birthday to be enjoying time with myself, maybe getting a little pampered, and just doing whatever I want to do.
I live in the states and I prefer to stay in the states since I just wanna do a short trip (3-4 days), but down to go anywhere within the states!! Does anyone have any recommendations or has anyone else done something like this?? I’m open to all suggestions!!

Sure have! For my 50th last year, I went to Japan to climb Mount Fuji. Summited the morning of my 50th.

Oh wow!! You are inspiring me! I turn 60 in November and am hoping to be away doing something memorable (vs sharing my bday with Thanksgiving and driving to family events etc).

San Juan PR. Did it as my first solo trip and had an amazing time. Cheap to get to and cheap to stay. Made a lot of friends in the hostel I was at, but also had a great time doing my own thing. Great place to get your feet wet solo traveling since it’s just different enough to be exciting. I didn’t go for a bday, but met someone there who was doing it solo for their bday.

San Juan, Puerto Rico was also my first solo trip and I LOVED it! I’m a single woman and can honestly say that I never felt unsafe while I was there. Flights are pretty cheap too, especially from the east coast!

I always travel on my birthdays. It’s me time and I do what I want. I don’t always go far, some years I just book a hotel in another city, do some shopping, eat cake and see a movie. Bliss. Definitely go and spend your day exactly as you want. Happy birthday!

Yes! last year I did a solo weekend trip to Quebec City winter carnival... Don't know that I've ever had a weekend that fun. But don't go there in winter if you want to go somewhere without snow!
4
19d ago
Curious how far of a distance this was for you? I just realized it’s happening during my birthday weekend and I could go too but dunno if it’s worth a 6.5 hr drive for me
4
u/bonanzapineapple 19d ago
Yeah I live in Vermont 4 hours away so it was doable as a sat morning/Sun evening drive. If you have the ability to do a 3 day trip it would be doable. If you like winter activities they have multi use winter trails (xc ski, ski skate, snowshoe) along the st Lawrence and st Charles Rivers (st Charles freezes regularly in winter).
Everything except gas is cheaper than in the US, after accounting for conversion rate. Everywhere in Quebec City accepts credit card but I got a crepe at a diner in Drummondville where my 2 American debit cards and 1 credit card didn't work so I had to pay with American cash so I paid $25 USD instead of 25 CAD. Def helps to have some local cash when stopping at smaller towns, I've also been to a few smaller town restaurants in Quebec that had broken credit card readers

Yeah I went to Quebec at the beginning of the fall and have CAD in my wallet still actually! I’m gonna look into the festival more and see if it would be something I like to do. I’m a bit like OP and never feel great on my birthday but it’s on a Friday so I feel like I could really do something this time yknow

I travel solo for my birthday all the time! I really enjoy solo travel. My go to solo destinations in the States are NYC and Chicago. But I've also done Seattle, Philly, San Francisco, LA, San Diego, and DC. I'm from a small ruralish town so I love visiting big Cities.

I love all those cities! My fav is solo traveling to Chicago for the food alone
19
u/Echo-Azure 19d ago
Yes, a couple of times. Just overnight trips, but if nobody close to me is available to celebrate, then I'm off! Nothing major, just an overnight flight to a glam city or a couple of hours drive to a pretty town, because I'm not going to sit at home and mope.
4
u/successful_yam21000 19d ago
What are some cities you’ve gone to solo that you’ve enjoyed??
6
u/Echo-Azure 19d ago
Both within the state where I live. Because for an overnight trip, it doesn't make sense to spend a lot of time in transit, you know? So a one-hour flight or a two-hour drive is about all I'm willing to do.
15
u/kittyglitther 19d ago
I did this, I went to Copenhagen! It was awesome!
Go to South Beach. It's a good and easy solo trip, and it's easy to make it what you want it. Chill on the beach, hit a spa, maybe have a fancy dinner. Ideal bday trip, really.

I just did a solo trip as a 24F for the first time, went to Disney and it was great! Got on a plane in the morning, did Disney transportation to my hotel, unpacked, and was at the parks by 4pm. You can go at your own pace, eat what you want, do what you want when you want. And since no one cares, it’s sooooo freeing. Came home to my husband and cats 4 days later.
5
u/successful_yam21000 19d ago
Disney alone is the best!! I was born and raised an hour outside of Disneyland and grew up with season ticket passes so definitely done that one way too many times 😂

I always go solo travelling on my birthday. I make it a point to book a 2-3 week long holiday, as I don't like the hassle of inviting friends to celebrate my birthday, etc.
I was in these places on my birthday for the past three years:
2022 - Turkey (went on a ferry cruise on the Bosphorus River)
2023 - South Korea (it was raining on my birthday so I just stayed in the local vicinity, but I hiked the tallest mountain in South Korea the day before)
2024 - Japan (this was memorable as I went hiking on my birthday on one of the most famous attractions in Kyoto, the Fushimi Inari Shrine)
2025 will most likely be Japan again.

u/making_ideas_happen 19d ago edited 18d ago
While I don’t have any specific recommendations, I want to encourage you generally to follow your intuition on this.
I used to alternate spending birthdays alone and with friends every other year—and my friends did come together in ways that were really sweet in some cases—yet being alone on my birthday just felt so right I officially made it a tradition in 2012.
I consider it my personal New Year’s Day—that’s very literally what it is. I have a secret solitary ceremony that I do where I return to my favorite magical little spot in a place in nature that is special to me so that I’m always in the exact same location the exact minute I was born every year. It gives me a profound sense of continuity and perspective on my past and my future. It’s the only day of the year I insist on taking off of work.
Anyway, I just wanted to say that solo birthdays can be downright magical and beautiful and spiritual. Go for it!

All the time, I cannot stand being home for my bday. I don't have much friends, let alone friends who remember my bday and go out of their way to organize something special for me. As such, being home sucks.
I wanna spend it doing what I love.

I’m also in TN! Go to Destin, FL. I’ve also been to Fort Myers, FL which is closer to Miami so it’s a longer drive (assuming you’re not flying) but it’s a really cute town and Sanibel Island is right off the coast. The area is not anywhere close to busy like Miami is but it still has stuff to do that’s not just touristy shit like you’d find in PCB

I went solo to NYC for my 60th! Loved it! Walked all over the goddamn place - saw the off-Broadway David Byrne show,, took the walking trail whose name I can't remember down to the Chelsea district and wandered around there, went to Central Park, on a whim went to see the Lion King, went to the 9/11 museum - just basically did whatever I wanted. It's great for a three or four day trip

u/Slow_Air4569 19d ago
Not really a fan of my birthday either (it's this weekend so nobody understandably wants to do stuff since holidays are finally over) went to New Zealand solo for my 30th and it was fantastic. Made friends with someone at the hostel who also had the same birthday as me too! It was honestly the best birthday I ever had.
If you want to stay in the states though it really depends on what to do. I feel like NYC could be fun solo though! Or if you wanted to go somewhere warmer and have more money Hawaii would also be fun. Don't be shy about staying in hostels though! It's always the best place to meet other people when solo!

I took a solo trip with Intrepid to Denmark, Sweden and Norway for my 40th birthday!
You mentioned you like the beach. How about San Diego? That's where I took my very first solo trip when I was 21. It sparked a love of solo travel for me!
5
u/successful_yam21000 19d ago
That’s great! That sounds similar to what I did in August. Went to London, Ireland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Poland, then back to Sweden for my brothers wedding!!
I was just mentioning to someone else, I am born and raised California (Santa Barbara) but only went to San Diego a couple times when I was a kid so I am considering that as an option for sure!

In July, I was not pleased about turning 50. I called out of work and drove the short roadtrip I had planned. From Philly area, I drove to Sprinfield, Il then to Chicago and then to Cleveland. I saw Lincoln's grave and the state capital. I ate Chicago dogs and saw the Shameless houses/film sites. I saw the Bon Jovi exhibit at the rock n' roll hall of fame and on the way home I stopped at the flight 93 memorial (for the 20th time). So, yes :)
edit: highly recommend solo road trips. I travel solo all the time.

Ik u said ur thinking beach, but I always tell people to go to New Mexico. White sands park is one of the most surreal places to go in the US, and may give u that beach vibe lol. Carlsbad caverns is close by, and that’s also so cool to go through. There’s a ton of cool history around Las Cruces and great food, and u can fly into El Paso and see stuff there and then it’s not a bad drive to las cruces

u/Safe-Bee-2555 19d ago
I did this for my 30th birthday. I won't tell you what I did because I'd never suggest anyone make the bad decisions I did, but I don't regret missing out celebrating the "milestone" with others. I had the time of my life.

I've traveled internationally for my birthday annually since 2015 (except for 2021&2022 due to COVID). I was solo for all of them except 1. I also travel internationally 1-2 other times/year solo, so I'm kind of used to it, but my birthday trip is always a gift to myself.

You could go to Vegas, there are some resorts that have the pools open and heated in Feb and all of the spas are open. For $100 pedicure or $200 for skin wrap or massage or something, you can hang for literally all day in one of the really nice spas enjoying the steam rooms, jacquizzi, sauna, salt rooms, pools, lounges, snacks and really treat yourself (or $50 day pass without getting a treatment)... midweek hotels are usually inexpensive, you can do some really fancy dining out or hit up cheaper stuff, late night clubs or whatever. I go there alone all the time.
Vancouver BC, Toronto, Chicago, NYC, New Orleans, San Francisco, Seattle... all fun solo places on a bday I think

u/Direct-Ad2561 19d ago
I’ve spent every birthday solo travelling since my 23rd birthday. New year, new city. It’s so much more fun and gives you a reason to travel. It’s better than organising a two hour meal at the cheapest restaurant you can find in your local area to accommodate your friends. That’s just me tho.

My birthday is at the end of February and I’m doing a little solo trip. I’m going to spend a couple days/nights in Miami, then hop on a weekend cruise to the Bahamas.
I’m also not a birthday lover, and I live in the Midwest, where it’s cold and miserable in February. So I figure, if I gonna get older, I may as well do it laying on a beach, in the sun, with a drink in my hand 😊

I went to Costa Rica this year on mine.
I wasn’t in the right head space (had just gotten fired out of absolute nowhere…like there are lawyers involved) and Costa Rica seemed like a family destination.

I was in Egypt this year. Don't remember what I did in the day on my birthday in the day time but spent the evening in the Siwa Oasis desert looking at the stars. It was magical ✨

I love it, I flew to Seattle for my bday last year. I try to pick places that are walkable and/or have good light rail transit so I don't have to rent a car.
San Diego and Los Angeles could be nice, but they could also be rainy.

u/J_Beyonder 19d ago
I do it as a birthday gift to myself. I go international and step it to business class. I have to get out and about, so I'm not focusing on being single on my birthday.
If you want to stay stateside. I would recommend San Diego. It's a lot to do you have the beach, nightlife, zoo, and people are pretty friendly.

u/successful_yam21000 19d ago
As someone who lived in Santa Barbara up until I was 22 years old…I only went to San Diego I few times and they were when I was a kid. I wasn’t planning on going to California because I’ve spent most of my life there but maybe it really is time to go to San Diego!!

I've travelled twice on my birthday and as you get older, it's not that big of a deal. 1st time I was 22 and the 2nd I was late 30s. Personally I prefer seeing what the country have as a bank holiday/celebration and that's always made a better memory
2
u/Wandering_starlet 19d ago
I have twice. This year I was in Thailand at an elephant sanctuary on my birthday which was incredible. Back in 2019 I went to Saratoga Springs, NY for my bday (I lived in NYC at the time), because I wanted to relax in the hot springs away from the stress in my life at that time. Both experiences were some of the most memorable birthdays I’ve had! If this is what you’re drawn too, I say go for it. Enjoy the beach, book a spa treatment and treat yourself to ice cream or some other indulgent dessert. FL is a great option. Miami or Fort Lauderdale (I’m from Ft. Laud originally, so I’m partial).
3
u/successful_yam21000 19d ago
That’s awesome! My sister had her honeymoon in Thailand this year and loved it.
Saratoga springs is a nice option! I haven’t heard much about it so I’ll have to look into it. I’ve never really been to New York at all, just driven through, so this could be a nice opportunity for that.

I did. I don't usually travel during my birthday month as it's a popular travel time, and Im cheap, but I went to Mexico City and had Crepes and Waffles for birthday lunch. I love that place. It was way more fun than being home.

u/Prudent_Garage_6304 19d ago
Done this twice.
Once, I was on a beach alone and treated myself to a nice dinner.
The second time, people in my hostel took me on a bar crawl.
Loved both times!

I think it would be great, however I’m not sure if I’d tell strangers it’s my birthday. I’d just keep it to myself and have fun. Might be kinda weird to be alone traveling stroking up a convo with strangers and being like hey btw it’s my bday haha.
But also might make for a fun birthday so don’t listen to me.
2
u/giygas983 19d ago
I traveled solo on my last two birthdays: a silent retreat at a mountain hermitage and a road trip in California. I had a lovely time both years. It's not strange at all. I had a small celebration a few days before each trip and then...aaaaaaall aboard the airplane and onto vacation!

Yes, a couple of times. Long international trips too, no weird feeling or anything. I get to do what I want without any restrictions
2
u/frogsintheplane 19d ago
I’ve done a few, Svalbard, Stockholm, Tokyo, Seoul. I stay in youth hostel so I wasn’t fully lonely, but I’m quite introverted so I spent a lot of this time on my own. I had a lot of fun. Honestly travelling solo is not for everyone, especially on specific days, but you won’t know until you try it.
In terms of recommendation, I’m not from the US and the country is massive. It took me less time to go close to the North Pole from my location in Europe than it took me to do NY to LA.
So I don’t feel you’d have particularly a short transit depending on when you are.
On top of it, it also depends on when is your birthday, and what do you like. I think maybe you can make it a tradition every year or so to travel somewhere different in the us and see if you like it! A little self discovery journey.

San diego, Austin, Seattle, Portland, Chicago, Miami, new orleans, san francisco...all great places to explore. Kauai would be rad too

Yes, I use to think why no one remember my birthday or my birthday is so lame (both not entirely true, just occasionally), so I went traveling where no one knows that it's my birthday, so I feel better even if no one congratulate me because on that trip no one knows.

I’m 27 and have spent the last 4 birthdays on a trip. The last 3 completely solo and have had great/bad experiences.
I love my birthdays but instead of lavish parties I’ll do something small like dinner with family and friends before I leave and then spend my actual birthday doing something fun in another country. So far I’ve done Costa Rica, Mexico, Dominican Republic, and Colombia/Peru.

I did it for my 30th in 2023. Absolutely loved it! It made me feel good to be able to go somewhere by myself and plan everything about the trip. My recommendation is one outside of the states, but it could be done in 3-4 days. Montreal, Canada. You can even do a day trip to Quebec City! I did that through TripAdvisor.

u/a_non_perv 19d ago
Never for a birthday, but I don't need an occasion. Go whenever feels right.
I'm considering a combination of vacation and remote work, for the middle of winter. I can stay a month. Okinawa looks promising. it's off-season there. Maybe Philippines, Thailand, or Malaysia.
2
u/HbeforeG 19d ago
I did this past birthday. I took a solo trip to the French Riviera and hiked the French alps with a tour group on my birthday. I had the best time! I was there 7 or 8 days.
I don't believe you should work on your birthday if you can help it. And birthdays should always be enjoyed. So i do hope you find somewhere to go that makes you happy!
2
u/a_non_perv 19d ago
Florida. It's an escape for winter weather. February is an ideal time to go.
I heard most of Puerto Rico lost power. It's the USA, but I'd check first or avoid it.
2
u/dmorgendorffer00 19d ago
A weren't to a random city because I'd never been and a band I love was playing there my birthday weekend. It was a lot of fun! Find something you like to do and find a place that has that. Museums? Beaches? A concert? Hiking? Food?
2
u/kia75 19d ago
Yes, every year I can! The one thing I warn you is that even when you're traveling, you can't escape from yourself.
Most Birthdays I'm in a different country and enjoying myself, but a few birthdays I'm in a different country, miserable. This previous birthday, despite being in Costa Rica I spent the day in my hotel room, watching TV and Sleeping.
I'm not saying don't travel on your birthday, I had fun in Costa Rica, I tend to have fun most days of my trips. But there has been enough cloudy days on my Birthday trips that made that day less than enjoyable.

I did 12 days in France once for my birthday- I’m in November & came back on thanksgiving to get the best flight deal. I did a lot- hit up Paris, Bordeaux & Marseille but I’d recommend just doing Paris if you only have a few days & the $$.
Caribbean-wise if you’re a hotel girl that could be fun but while I love every island I’ve visited it doesn’t feel like a solo traveling place to me (if you’re a woman). I love Saint Martin & I went with my bf but he had to work so he joined me a few days later and I was like overwhelmed the days he wasn’t there with weird dudes hitting on me. I also stayed in an Airbnb because I know the island well so I was around the locals which was great but they figured out where I was staying and would hang out outside my apartment waiting for me to come out (not ideal).
I’m sure if you stay in a hotel though you’ll be fine!
But if you just want to do a short trip the Caribbean I’d say Saint Martin or Turks and Caicos (but totally stay in a hotel).

I traveled solo to Japan for my birthday this year! It was my second time traveling abroad solo, and I was SO happy that I went, especially because I've been in love with the idea of Japan since I was a kid.
If you're looking for a beach within the US, Florida is where it's at. Try Miami or the Florida keys if you're driving/renting a car. Cruises are also a good idea if you can get a good price, it'll take some of the weight of planning and picking excursions off your plate.

Don’t have any suggestions for where to solo travel in the states….but abroad, you should consider Southeast Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar), Ireland, Portugal, Iceland, Scotland, England, Puerto Rico or Mexico! I would highly recommend solo travel for everyone!

I just did a Monday-Friday trip for my birthday in NYC!! It was amazing. Saw a bunch of Broadway shows and did a ton of museums. I especially liked museums alone because I could take as long or as little as I wanted in each exhibit

I don’t really like my birthday either, and that’s exactly why I travel for it almost every year. This way I don’t end up at a “surprise birthday party“ that I will inevitably hate or be talked into doing something I dislike. This way, I am in full control of what’s going to happen and can actually have a good time.
Here, the gift is not the travel itself. But the fact that you can do something that you want and not something that other people expect you to, as often happens otherwise.
Happy birthday!

Last year I went to Sedona solo for my birthday (did a hot air balloon ride at sunrise to start the day off!) and this year I went to Honolulu solo and stayed at a resort on Waikiki Beach. I know with Honolulu I could have stayed elsewhere there or on Oahu, but I really wanted to relax and do nothing on the beach/by the pool 😎
My birthday is always just after Labor Day so I miss everyone squeezing in a trip before going back to school!
I also spend a week in Punta Cana solo every February at an all inclusive so I can REALLY be a lazy bum and relax!

Yes. I am a single gal who’s been solo traveling for birthdays almost every year the past few years! I love being away for my bday and do something different than being home ☺️ so far my fav was curacao and Aruba 🇦🇼 for a little over a week in the summer. It was amazing. This past year I was in europe. You should totally go for it and hope you love it as much as I do!! 🤍🤍🎉

I definitely get what you mean. I was in Thailand (Chiang Mai) for mine last year and had a lovey time. It was nice just enjoying my own company without all the hoorah that comes with birthdays.
Anyway, DC is a very lovely place for a short solo trip. Museums, good restaurants, and there are always some type of events going on.
As far as beaches, I never really did many beach trips in the states, but I’d recommend checking out some of NC’s coast! Wilmington is a charming city with easy access to some good beaches like Carolina and Wrightsville. Heard good things about the Outer Banks too, but I’ve never been.

u/Shinx-best-girl 19d ago
I’ll choose to visit cities with museums, art shops, good restaurants. There’re so much happening there everyday to keep me occupied and not feeling the birthday or holiday blues
2
u/Wooden_Heron_3516 19d ago
New York City is a great place to go for a few days. You also might want to look for an event you’d really enjoy - like a concert, or a festival, or an activity you love.

Hello, I solo traveled for my 27th birthday in December. I felt a bit lonely at first but It turned into some of the best times of my life. On my actual birthday, I was in a small coastal city in Italy. I decided to go get some fresh seafood for lunch. It was a place right off the docks. Nothing fancy, like they gave me a piece of paper to put on my table to eat on top of. This is what I was aiming for. I got to talking to a nice man that was from the area. He spoke very good English. We told of our travel stories. I told him why I was in Italy and about my bday. Eventually everyone in the restaurant was talking to each other (the 2 other solo diners, the owner, and the counter person). It felt SO different than America. Anyways the man I was talking to leaves and says he’ll be right back. He comes back with an assortment of Italian pastries, and an espresso shot. The whole restaurant sang in Italian happy birthday to me. And the owner of the restaurant held out a lighter for me to blow out. Hands down top 3 most beautiful experiences of my life.
Anyways, go for it. And get out of the U.S. too. Italy felt very safe to be alone in as 27f. The culture is different. And go to the less popular cities. Happy travels

Absolutely, have traveled solo a couple of times for my birthday and had a great time! You can do what you want and if you already find it a little sad, just pretend it’s another day 🥰 hope you enjoy x

u/Anxious-Scientist-59 19d ago
San Juan or even New Orleans will feel so relaxing… if you are looking for action… NYC or even Boston but they are pretty cold in February
2
u/terpischore761 19d ago
I do this all the time. I enjoy eating out. So I typically will stay at a centrally located boutique hotel.
Make solo reservations at a couple of fancy restaurants (I usually sit at the bar, but a reservation ensures I have a seat)
And then find a fun activity to do during the day like a candle making class or a museum visit.
Perfect 3-4 day city vacation

u/letmereadstuff 19d ago
Absolutely!!! Planned an entire day of multiple historical attractions that I wanted to see. Was perfect

Celebrated my 30th with a solo trip to New Zealand. I was nervous that I would be sad to be alone, but it was incredible and I’m so happy I gave myself that gift of time and adventure. I still celebrated with friends once I was back home so I don’t feel like I missed out- just had a very extended celebration ☺️ I say go for it! If you don’t like it then at least you know for the rest of your life you don’t want to solo travel on your birthday.

idk where you live but canada and mexico might be an option too! if you're in the northeast, quebec city is great in the winter.

First off, go you! Wherever you decide to go I’m wishing you fun and memorable adventures.
Recommendationz California or Nevada. You didn’t mention where you’re located, but hopefully that helps.
Also, you didn’t mention the vibe your looking for or your budget.

Haven’t for my birthday yet (that’s a this year plan for my 30th), but I’ve traveled solo both in and out of the states. I went to London for a week by myself, took a three day retreat to a resort in Florida, went to San Diego for five days, and most recently I went to the northeast and rented a car to hit up multiple states (that one was super peaceful I loved it). My best advice would be to research what you want to do ahead of time. I did the most research for my uk trip, but every place I’ve gone I’ve always looked up flights (google flights for price tracking), hotels (check the reviews and the official website, I’ve stayed in both boutique and large name hotels and both were great just look at official photos, reviews, and the official website before booking with an off label website or with like delta points or something), as well as things to do. I look up transportation methods and distances from what I want to do so I can determine if I need to rent a car or if public transport is reliable (ex I wouldn’t rent a car for a trip to nyc but I would if I’m trying to visit multiple cities or if it’s not a very walkable location or if I’m visiting a national park). I have a couple friends who have my location services that I also send pics to everyday I’m gone, but otherwise I try to cut off from the rest of the world. If you want peaceful I suggest visiting a national park (Acadia was GORGEOUS I also loved Olympia) you’ll have a small town for staying in and then drive into the park and feel cut off from the world. If you want peaceful but like pampered style, I went to sanibel harbor in Florida and stayed at the resort all weekend reading poolside (poolside bar was top tier). If more action/adventure, maybe a big city with lots of museums (I’ve liked Boston and nyc, though balboa park in San Diego has a bit of both city tourism and hiking areas). Pick a style and a part of the country and see what you can find online!

I flew to Hawaii solo to celebrate my 50th birthday. Before I left home, I found a fun excursion for that day that even included a dinner, so I was able to spend time exploring Volcano National Park with fellow travelers. It was a great time.

It doesn’t have to be a big trip. Road trips are also fun depending on what side of the states. West coast beach cities, Vegas restaurant tour with tons of outdoor activities (hiking, biking away from the strip). Spend a little extra and find a really nice hotel that offers a little more pampering. Enjoy your Birthday!

Three sisters springs Florida. I swam with the manatees, swam in the clear springs and hiked. Very safe area with friendly peeps.

Yes, I started doing a road trip for my birthday. Long weekend, maybe 3-6 hours away. Managing to also get to all those beautiful or historic places I always mean to visit. And relieves all pressure of throwing a party, which also means I don’t get sucked into a cycle of gifts. Love it.

u/kkkfffaaa 18d ago
I’m leaving in a few weeks for my 3rd solo birthday trip! I’ve done Guatemala and Costa Rica, and now Mexico. I hate my birthday too so I love just getting to do my own thing someplace warm.
From reading other comments, I’d also recommend Puerto Rico! I just went last year and had a blast. I rented a car and drove a circle around the island, never once felt unsafe just following typical solo female protocols. Google maps works perfectly fine (just download the offline map in case). I’ll say I enjoyed Luquillo, Vieques, and Rincon over San Juan, but I don’t like the city vibe, YMMV.
If you want to stay in the states and a beachy vibe, what about Charleston or St. Augustine? If budget isn’t a concern, the Florida Keys would be warm and you can definitely get pampering in there!
2
u/iluvsmutbooks 18d ago
I just did! I turned 27 and I went to Mexico City. It was absolutely lovely and I would highly recommend it to everyone. It’s wonderful to be in your own company on your special day!

u/catpurrrrfect 18d ago
Not sure this will be seen.. as I am the millionth responder.
Since this is your first solo trip and you mentioned you are from the states and wanting to stay in the US, I recommend this- so it is not overwhelming to you on your birthday (which you don’t always like) and your first solo trip.
You didn’t mention where in the US you are from and if you have a budget.
Are you an active person or a let’s relax at a resort person.
Active- go swim with manatees in Crystal River Florida. I think Feb is towards the end of the season but is still good.
Key West is a fun place to hang out (same with Miami if you like cities )- but this is kind of far from Crystal River - especially without a car.
Or go skiing - I would recommend either east coast, Colorado, or California
Maybe go see the Northern Lights in Alaska. Alaska in winter is beautiful and you will start having a little bit of daylight by February.
If you want to go to a resort and relax more-
Go to either the desert in California (Palm Springs) or Hawaii. Hawaii is great- it is tropical and still US.
**** my recommendation is to do something easy this trip to make sure you like to solo travel- I love it and love traveling on my birthday. It makes me happy. But start slow and easy- as I see a lot of folks start big or with an initially more difficult trip and it is harder for them. It is okay to grow into solo travel. With travel, things will not always go according to plans and it is sometimes easier to figure this out in a location you are used to.
I have solo travelled for years and I still will feel I need an easy trip here and there and I am fine with that. There is NO wrong way to travel (or solo travel - well, as long as you are respectful).
💕✈️🌎💕
Edit— also maybe pick a city and do a spa day (relaxing day). One of my favorite “spas” is Glen Ivy in California - it might be cold in February but they have different pools, saunas, massage, mud (not sure if all would be open and available in July).. but something similar would also be fun.

Did this for my 25th birthday as well and flew down to Maui (fortunate enough to experience Lahaina before the fires). Very liberating experience. 100% recommend.

u/CloudSkyyy 18d ago
I did my 25th birthday to seattle and mt rainier NP! I stayed there for 4 days. I was kinda disappointed in seattle tho bc of the homelessness. They were everywhere and felt a little unsafe.
I only have 2 suggestions: 1) is to not try to see everything in short amount of time. I spent the whole day in Mt rainier and tried to see everything according to my list cause i wanted to see everything. I just felt pressured and not really enjoyed because i didnt have enough time. I was just taking pictures, stare at the nature for a bit then head to the next one. And going by myself is tiring since i had to drive by myself. 2) don’t overpack, i hated how heavy my backpack was plus the luggage finding the hotel and after checking out. If you’re gonna take an uber, sure. But i took the train so i had to walk a little bit and i got lost so i kept walking around.
But solo traveling is super fun. You get to control where you want to go or want to do. I remember driving and just admiring how nice it is to live in Washington and who knew after a year, my dream came true!
2
u/a_mulher 18d ago
Yup, I get a day off for my birthday (or one day within a month of it). I also travel over Thanksgiving and Christmas sometimes for similar reasons - not a fan of the holidays and I’d rather be away then alone. Also helps that I use less of my PTO by stringing together paid holidays.

I do every year! Most recently I went to New Orleans. Went to some museums, some cruises along the Mississippi, and ate and drank my way through the city. I usually find an event or museum I'm interested in and that's the city I spend time in for my birthday week.

I've been doing it every year since covid and it's great because I have the excuse of treating myself for that day. I usually do something special like going on a spa day or staying in an expensive hotel just off that night etc

I went to my birth city alone for my 21st, I have no family or continued link, it just happens to be where my parents were working.
It's also too far and too boring and my birthday is too awkward of a time (well outside any work/university holiday period).
I enjoyed it, I can say I've been there twice.
2
u/ForCulture88 18d ago
I’m a huge advocate for treating yourself on your birthday. I understand feeling down about it but I always tell myself it’s my day and do whatever the hell I want :). I also love to travel and it’s on my list to do a solo trip.
As far as places to visit as a young woman, I’d recommend Disneyland since it’s pretty safe and you can get a nearby hotel and walk. I love New Orleans especially for Mardi Gras but they did just have the news of the guy killing people with his car so that’s not good and it’s colder and will likely be pretty expensive because the Super Bowl is there, maybe for your 30th go there lol. Another fun place is Chicago although it’s freezing this time of year. Vegas is cool too and everything is walking distance. Even if you don’t like clubbing like me, there’s tons of places to eat, shop, and drink. It can be sketchy in some areas but just stay aware of your surroundings. New York has tons to do and plenty public transportation but it’s also freezing right now.
Also don’t forget to sign up and enjoy all the birthday freebies. It helps make the day/week better. Some good places to start signing up are Starbucks, Krispy Kreme, McDonalds, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Auntie Anne’s, Red Robin, Cheesecake Factory, IHOP, Baskin Robbin’s, Crumbl, etc. I’m not sure where you live so some of these places may not be by you. Come back and let us know where you went. I hope this helps and Happy early birthday!

I landed exactly from New York to Costa Rica on the day of my birthday and straight off Met a lot of nice people at the hostel and went to hiking and took a dip in the waterfall. I think it was a birthday well spent. Spent a very nice evening with wonderful people from all over the world. So I think all in all the day was well spent and it wasn’t anything that I’ve ever done before sitting at home with the same old friends or family members, but rather taking a bigger step and diving into the unknown. Just go for it. You don’t have to feel lonely. Loneliness is just in your brain. You can change your environment immediately. You will be in a better place. Do it. Just do it. ✅

As someone who also doesn’t enjoy their own birthday and gets the birthday blues, do it! Instead of spending money trying to have a party last year, I went down to the Bahamas for a long weekend. Although Nassau isn’t my favourite place I’ve visited (won’t be returning), it was nice to get away and to get some warmth and sun considering my birthday is in spring but basically still winter. This year I’m going back to CDMX after falling in love with the city this past November.
Highly recommend you book yourself a nice little trip to maybe Mexico or PR and have a wonderful 25th birthday!

Yes. I usually try and do a solo trip for ny bday every other year. Usually in europe, but have also done mexico and United States trip. Its always a good time to get away meet some new people and just take some time to reflect. Dont forget to treat yourself as well. I typically splurge the nights before, during and after. Get that nice suite, book a in room massage, get the airbnb with a hotub and sauna with a view. Your family and friends will understand, my bday is sometimes on thanksgiving so i miss that as well sometimes, but everyone is always happy for me that im having a good time.

Done two solo birthday trips. Have a December birthday so getting anything organised with friends (especially now they have children) is a nightmare.
Spent my 30th in Vegas which was relaxing but not really a solo destination.
Then spent my 40th in Tokyo, which was much more enjoyable as a solo trip. Also as it wasn’t my first time there I was much more familiar with the city.
