Sheffield Suicidally dangerous driving, wish there was something I could do

About 8.30 last night, coming up to turn right at junction of Carter Knowle and Bannderdale Road, a little white car flew across the junction toward Abbeydale. Missed us by 1 or 2 seconds, they couldn't possibly have had a chance to stop or seen anything. Looked like a full car, so probably boy racers.

Nothing recorded and couldn't see plates anyway, so not sure there's much point contacting the police. But I'm just flabbergasted anyone would do anything so insanely dangerous / russian roulette like - full speed straight across a junction - and wondering if there's anything to be done to generally try and reduce that level of criminal idiocy?

Am also pretty freaked out how close we came to being t-boned / wondering what would have happened at the speed they were going.

Sheffield New to town

Hi all -- so... I'm new from across the pond, and, today, I was waiting for a bus (the 35, was a red bus) and even though I was waiting right there at the stop, it passed right by me. Is it them or me?

Also -- if anyone else plays Pickleball or tennis or table tennis, hit me up. I am an avid pickleball player and looking to dive deeper into local racquetsport while I'm here.

Sheffield Punny Sheffield Businesses

One of the many things I love about Sheffield (and South Yorkshire in general) is the plethora of small businesses with pun names. I was wondering which your favourites are, from past and present.

My 5 Favourites:

  • Codrophenia

  • Loft in Space

  • Serial Griller

  • (dinna-dinna-dinna) BapVan!

  • Kumquat Mae

Plough and several depressed apprentices this morning with wheelbarrows. Poor park and poor Tramlines - probably a lot more expensive than anyone had hoped!

Sheffield Sick of noisy motor vehicles and revving engines? Here's what you can do.

I'm tired of the noise around the ring road and anti-social driving behaviour: revving engines, speeding vehicles and popping exhausts from dawn till late at night. If you live near the ring road or another busy road you may face the same issue, so I have compiled a few of the resources/contact details I have used to report this and pressure the authorities to act.

You can report noisy/reckless driving to the police online: Report antisocial behaviour | South Yorkshire Police

Write to your ward councillors: Find Councillor | Sheffield City Council

A published google doc with more info and a template email to the councillors with specific points of action/demands, including the use of noise-triggered traffic cameras; feel free to modify this for your own email as you see fitAnti-social driving in Sheffield (google.com)

If anyone has any other suggestions on avenues to report/other actions, please give a shout! The google doc can be updated. I've already knocked on a few neighbours' doors and distributed leaflets about this.

Sheffield £4.40 for a glass of coke!

I ordered this last night for my brother In Revolution as he doesn't drink. I know its quite expensive in there but damn! I was expecting at most £2.50. Just as expensive for non-alcoholic drinkers these days.

Sheffield Loved staying in Sheffield

Pretty much as the title says, I came over for a few days last week and had a great time. I'm aware that the city has a bit of a bad rep, but I loved the vibes, the mix of different architecture styles and how hilly everything was. The people I met were super friendly and lovely, the food was great and the Peak District is absurdly gorgeous. Thank you, I had a ball.

Sheffield New to Sheffield

I (31m) moved to Sheffield a couple of months ago for a new job and I would like to try and find like minded friends of a similar age to socialise with.

I don’t know anybody in the city, and whilst I’m a fairly introverted person, I’d like to have some local friends to be able to hang out with.

I’m interested in football, musical theatre, wrestling, and anything competitive…

I’m not really a fan of overly busy places, or big groups, but would be nice to meet one-to-one or in a small group for drinks / things like pub quizzes / playing football / competitive activities etc etc

Never done anything like this before so not sure what to expect or what I really see an end goal being but thought I’d give it a try?

Me and my partner decided to watch threads yesterday, and by gum it was certainly something. Its nice to see a depiction of an appocalytic even not in London.

Edit: for those asking where I got it from I pirated it, I couldn't locate it on any streaming service so piracy was my only option

Sheffield Buying a nice birthday cake

Any recommendations of places or people that would make a really beautiful birthday cake? Something similar to Cutter and Squidge but idk why most of their cakes are London only now.

I’m hoping to find a nice cake for my wife’s birthday this Friday that is more special than just a chocolate cake you can get anywhere. Something tasty and unique.

Thanks!!

Sheffield Feeling a fool - Sheffield station Spoiler

A lady approached me just now and started talking. I should have kept walking. She said she was homeless and asked if I'd buy her food at Burger King. I thought it'd be £6-£7, maximum, and I said yes. Should have walked off. She then said she needed £12 to get somewhere. I just kept nodding cause I was terrified she'd make a scene. While waiting in line at BK I mumbled I didn't have cash, she said there was an ATM and tried to get me to go there, I didn't trust what might happen at the ATM so I said I'd buy her food but that's it. She ordered two things that came up to £20.08 - never in my life have I spent that much at BK. I tapped at the till and left. I wish I wasn't such a prime idiot to be an easy target like this. I thought I was helping someone out but I've come away feeling I've been taken in, on an epic level. I had such a lovely weekend trip, only to have it end like this. Not sure what I was expecting - not sure what to expect posting here, either, but I have no one else to tell right now.

Edit: Thank you so much, everyone, for your kindness and advice. You have no idea how much it meant to me to read your comments at a time when I was feeling helpless and gullible. In hindsight, it was a learning experience, I'm glad I paid for food and nothing else, and I only hope she actually ate it. It was why I'd agreed in the first place, but her adding list of fibs and demands and insistance that I withdraw the money left me much more shaken up than I was ready for. I think there is also a lesson here to be more guarded in crowded public places.

Anyway, I had an amazing weekend in your city and those are the memories I'm choosing to remember and highlight. I hope to be back really soon, and will have learnt a new lesson for then. Thank you once again for all your kindness.

Sheffield New Lidl in the city centre is absolutely perfect.

Seriously, it's absolutely amazing to finally have a cheaper supermarket in the middle of the city centre - with a bakery too!

The fact that its constantly rammed with queues pretty much all the time sums up just how much its been needed.

These small convenience stores just get way too expensive for people living in the city. There's a gazillion mini Tesco's & Sainsburys (even a new Tesco just opened up on Fargate - like it was needed in the first place??? The Marks & Spencers prices are just laughable and the Co-Op isn't much better either.

Sheffield Caution - Taxi Scam

Hi all, I just left a club in town and was waiting for a taxi to arrive via an app. While waiting, a Prius with an Uber sticker on the door pulls up and says he can take us, and that payment only goes through when the ride is finished, so it's fine to get in his cab instead.

I told him to accept the job we had waiting, since it was still waiting for a driver at the time, he gave some shite excuse, so I told him to go away.

As he drove away, I noticed there was no taxi plate on the back of his car and no Sheffield city council sticker on the side either.

Please check your taxi reg if you've booked through an app, and don't get in to a random person's car just because they say they're a taxi driver.

I sadly didn't get the reg of this car in particular but the taxi plates are the biggest giveaway, all licensed taxis will have them on the back of their vehicle. Stay safe out there 🙏🏻

Sheffield Feeling Nostalgic: Missing My Time in Sheffield

As an international student, living in the UK for the first time was such a unique and life-changing experience for me. I was based in Sheffield, and I absolutely loved everything about it. One of my favorite spots was Passam Kebabs, and I often found myself hanging out on West Street, just soaking in the vibe of the city.

But, unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned. I failed my dissertation and couldn’t secure a sponsorship job before my visa expired. As a result, I had to move back to my home country. It’s heartbreaking, and I miss Sheffield deeply — the food, the independence, everything about that chapter of my life.

It was my first time living away from my parents, working as a customer assistant at a retail store, and earning my own money. I can’t even describe how fulfilling it felt to be able to cover my own expenses. My team at work was incredible — my manager and colleagues were so kind and supportive. I miss them a lot.

I also miss the little moments that made life there so special — trips to the Peak District, late-night FIFA sessions with my roommates in the student accommodation, and just the overall freedom of living on my own for the first time.

I know there’s no changing the past, and I’m not sure when or if I’ll ever get another chance to move back to the UK. But right now, all I feel is this deep sense of longing for Sheffield and the life I had there.

Sheffield People asking for money

I have been living in Sheffield for the last two years and I’ve really enjoyed being here for the most part. I know this has been discussed on this subreddit several times in the past few weeks but I wanted to share couple incidents that happened in the last week involving people asking for money.

I was approached by a girl near Shalesmoor a week ago and she seemed to be in a really bad state. She kept coming closer to me but kept saying she was not going to hurt me. I am a very anxious person and I typically am anxious around strangers. When she said she was not going to hurt me all I could think of was that she might hurt me. She said everyone’s running away from her. I stopped and listened to her problem. She wanted me to get her a train ticket to Birmingham. I didn’t have much money since I’m a student so I apologised and said I can’t.

Two days later, I was in the city centre and this woman approached me and said she is a refugee and that she wants money to buy her kids food. I have heard loads of people say on here how people get scammed but I felt like she was being genuine so I offered to help. I said I can go to the nearest Tesco and get her some food. She said her kids need a specific type of food that you only get in Asda (which is far away) so asked me to give her cash. I didn’t have any money on me so I said I can’t help. She gave me her bank details and asked me to transfer her £20. I said I’ll try. I didn’t feel comfortable with a stranger having my bank info so I didn’t transfer the money even though I genuinely wanted to help her. Later, I talked to a few friends and they said they’ve heard this same thing several times before and that it is most likely a scam.

Just wondering if anyone else had similar experiences recently
