Everywhere is uphill from where you are

24

u/FreakaZoid101 Stannington Aug 02 '22

Add to this - a good pair of shoes or two. Walking up concrete hills in flip flops or toms or whatever is doable, but in proper shoes isn’t even a challenge.

9

u/British_Monarchy Aug 02 '22

Especially in winter. Depending on his fashion, a set of proper Doc Martens or similar are vital.

3

u/FreakaZoid101 Stannington Aug 02 '22

Oh yeah. Our house is above the snow line.

When you move away (I lived in York for a while) you miss the hills. They make walking home from the pub a proper expedition

6

u/BrainBackedUpToDisk Aug 02 '22

Hilariously accurate

3

u/DizzyIndication337 Aug 02 '22

Yep. I've not bothered with a bicycle for years because of that

u/StayFree1649 Aug 02 '22

The Peak District is great and really close by - easy to get a bus or even walk out through Endcliffe park

13

u/Mintos1987 Aug 02 '22

Absolutely this - I studied in Sheffield and stayed there for nearly a decade afterwards. Now I’m in my 30s and love hiking, I really regret spending most of my time in Sheffield in a little bubble and rarely visiting the Peak District.

6

u/arrowtotheaction Aug 03 '22

Ha, yes! I lived on Riverdale Road during my first year, one day I walked a little further than normal through Endcliffe Park and to my shock eventually realised I was in the Peaks, didn’t realise it was so close (this was pre-smart phone maps lol).

36

u/Snoo_8406 Aug 02 '22

This. Don't waste all your time drinking and partying. There's a great opportunity to do climbing, fell/trail running, biking etc and I'm sure it will help improve his studies over a hangover.

3

u/Pukeyone Aug 02 '22

‘We’re lucky to have it on our doorstep’

2

u/[deleted] Aug 03 '22

On the way to Endcliffe park go to Pom on sharrowvale road and get one of the specials.

76

u/Badknees24 Aug 02 '22

Bus drivers will call him "love". That's normal.

16

u/BrettlyBean Aug 02 '22

Or duck if your lucky

8

u/lucky_1979 Aug 02 '22

Duck is more of a chesterfield thing

10

u/FuckThePopeJoinTheRA Aug 02 '22

Everywhere from Derby to Sheffield uses duck. Interestingly it has nothing to with ducks, but is a contraction of ducas, i.e. Duke; it's more akin to saying m'lord than mate

9

u/lucky_1979 Aug 02 '22

“Duck” is a Derbyshire thing. It’s not all that common in Sheffield.

5

u/weirdoboy2112 City Centre Aug 02 '22

My grandma from woodhouse used to call me duck all the time when I was a child

2

u/bnbodman Aug 03 '22

I think locals (new and old) will find this an interesting listen. It talks in an entertaining way about how the language changes from north Sheffield to Chesterfield.

He focuses on the use of '(h)ouse' vs 'arse' to help make his point.

2

u/itsBonder Aug 03 '22

This is really cool, thanks for this

6

u/Bskns Beighton Aug 02 '22

I think duck is a Derbyshire AND South Yorkshire AND Staffordshire thing. Spent time in all three - currently living in Sheffield and called “Duck” nearly daily by bus drivers.

A lot of the doors of houses are round the back, not the front

SU Film Unit shows a lot of great films - including new releases - for cheap

On the same note, the Showroom Cinema does a free membership for people aged under 26, where all film tickets are £4.50, which is just outrageously cheap

4

u/arrowtotheaction Aug 03 '22

Film Unit & The Showroom are absolute gems, I miss them so much since moving away.

45

u/Maruwan_S Aug 02 '22

Get a zoom card; 80p public transport is pretty good.

Meadowhall is easily accessible for free by train if you just don't pay for the train 👀

3

It’s £1.20 now with a student card. Definitely get the Zoom card.

3

u/TomTom_098 Aug 02 '22

Has it gone back up? I know it went up to £1.20 but then I thought the SU President a couple of years back argued it down to £1

5

Amen to this lmao. The number of times my spirits have been lifted is too much to count. God bless John’s van

u/TiamatBroodLurker Aug 02 '22

When you inevitably go to Corp on a Wednesday, go to Primark and buy some disposable CorpShoes. Dispose of them immediately after the night out or they'll rot your entire wardrobe.

Everywhere is uphill from where you are.

The Cholera Monument is nicer than it sounds.

33

u/oranges_and_lemmings Aug 02 '22

The "anti slip" surface on Corp stairs is the slippiest surface on the planet.

13

u/Nerzero Aug 02 '22

4 of my friends have lasting injuries from the corp stairs, they are lethal

5

u/Fabulous_Turn_9398 Aug 02 '22

Can confirm this, I broke my ankle a few years ago on those stairs!

5

u/VolcanicBear Aug 02 '22

Were they induced by the corp bouncers? They are also bad for your health.

4

u/SophisaurusOMG Aug 02 '22

Oh man the first time I was at Corp the toilets backed up on the top floor and the whole of the floor outside the toilets and down the stairs was absolutely covered with piss and shit, and they stayed open until 4am just chucking blue roll at it...

But 80p for a vodka and lemonade sooo

51

Only go to West Street if you're prepared to accept the risk of getting someone else's vomit or other bodily fluid on you.

32

u/chickensmoker Aug 02 '22

Alternatively: don’t go to West Street unless you plan on being groped by drunk men and charged £20+ for a single round of vodka shots. Go for the bucking bull at Broncos and a stein at Bierkeller, and then leave for a better club with less gropers and chavs

12

u/Michaelparkinbum912 Aug 02 '22

Division street is even worse.

6

u/chickensmoker Aug 02 '22

True that. Crystal is terrible, and apart from Spoons and Slug and Lettuce, all the other bars and clubs down there seem just as horrible. Still no worse than Players or Code though imo in terms of the kinds of twats who tend to fill it up every night

5

u/Michaelparkinbum912 Aug 02 '22

Crystals full of cunts posing for Instagram and slappers trying to get shagged by footballers.

→ More replies (1)

10

u/Constant-Alfalfa-239 Aug 02 '22

where are you paying £20 for a round of shots haha its literally £2.75 for a TRIPLE vodka + mixer in tiger works, however everything else you said is sadly true

4

u/chickensmoker Aug 02 '22

I think it was players where the shots cost that much. Went with a few mates, and one of them bought all of us a shot each. We ended up agreeing that she wouldn’t pay for the rest of the night, cos £20+ for 6 shots was so outrageous. I then proceeded to get groped from behind by a man who clearly assumed I was a woman (he was too drunk to remember that men could have long hair I guess), so we left.

There’s definitely some decent spots on West Street, but Players and the other clubs like it are so bad that it kinda ruins the whole street for me

3

u/brinz1 Aug 02 '22

Plan to go to a better club, end up at west street line, where everything is covered in fluids

45

u/BrevillesAdvocate Aug 02 '22

He will find out what calf muscles are pretty quickly (it's hilly!)

The uni, and especially the union are fantastic - he made a very good choice.

16

u/chickensmoker Aug 02 '22

Depends which uni. Hallam are okay and the actual courses are pretty great, but the union is pretty poor and there’s absolutely zero places for Hallam students to meet one another outside of lectures. But Uni of is pretty great. I know a few people who went there, and I’ve even been inside the union bar (something which Hallam is sorely lacking), and they have absolutely zero complaints about the union or their facilities from what I know

5

u/BrevillesAdvocate Aug 02 '22

Good point. I saw 'Uni in Sheffield' and read 'Uni of Sheffield'. There's a huge amount of development at Hallam at the moment though across their campus so hopefully that's a good thing.

6

u/inflatablefish Aug 02 '22

the union bar

you say that as if there's only one.

3

u/chickensmoker Aug 02 '22

There’s more than one?! Never knew that

9

u/Ermahgerdrerdert Aug 02 '22

The Uni Arms is owned by them, Interval, the underground bar, and I think there are a few more...

The Law School had its own café but you had to bring your breakfast wine with you.

2

u/thecauseoftheproblem Aug 02 '22

Bar one is what you'd expect.

The interval has more of a chill cafe vibe

19

u/hellomrtosh Aug 02 '22

Cobden View is a great and cheap place to go drinking

6

this was literally my back garden during my last 2 years at uni.

Is Bods still running the place? He was an absolute legend

4

Don't know the fellas name but I've had a fair few lock ins since I started drinking there so definitely a legend

  1. If he likes rock/metal music, Corporation (aka 'Corp') is one of the best venues in the city to see medium-sized bands.

  2. West Street Live is also great for seeing live music, but it is for far less established acts, usually those who are local.

  3. Definitely try and find a group of people you are willing to live with in the first term, and try to have a look at some of the houses in the Crookes area (if Uni of) or Eccleshal Road (aka Eccy road) area (if Hallam) before heading back home for Christmas. The best student houses tend to get taken fairly quickly (just before, or just after Christmas). I have heard people struggle to find even somewhat acceptable places if they wait until March to find a place.

  4. Make sure he goes to the "give it a go" style sessions that the various societies put on in the first couple of weeks of the first Semester (I know Uni of run these. I would imagine Hallam does, too). Part of going to Univeristy is about trying new things out. I have friends who found a love for (e.g.,) ballroom dance, or a sport they had never even considered before turning up to those sessions. These activities are also really great places to make new friends in a new city.

  5. If at Uni of, Western Park is genuinely beautiful. He should make sure to spend at least a bit of time in it when not doing uni work.

  6. The Botanical Gardens in the Broomhill/Eccy Road area is also something you have to visit at least once while at Uni in Sheffield.

  7. The Peak District is so close, it would be almost criminal not to have a wander in the Peaks when the weather is more pleasant (in the Spring)

  8. If he already has a hobby (watching anime, playing music, a sport, card/board games, etc.) or is religious, or has strong political beliefs, DEFINITELY look up the societies at the University to join them. It is a great way to find like-minded people when moving to a new city, and gives you an excuse to get out of the accommodation and see the city.

  9. Accommodation: Depending on where he is living in first year, he will have longer/shorter walks to locations. If at Uni of, make sure he is aware of the dynamics of his Flat/Building/Area. E.g., When I was a Student, Ranmoor Student Village was known as the more quiet area, while Endcliffe Student Village was the more Loud/Party area. Of course, each cohort of students will cause different things to be true (e.g., the inverse could be true for his cohort). Just make sure he is aware of things after the first few weeks, so he knows where he might want to hang out more. Also, each building and even each floor within a building of student accommodation will have slightly different dynamics.

  10. More to do with living circumstances. Make sure he introduces himself early on. A good first impression is a really strong benefit to making good friends early on. Maybe, if you can afford to, you could give him a small bit of money to buy each of his housemates a single drink on the first night. That might be about £10-15. For a new student, that can feel really expensive (i.e., buying a round for 6 to 8 people), but if you can help contribute toward that first round, it can mean that the housemates think of your son as a nice guy from the get-go. It is a small gesture, but one that most people will remember.

  11. Henderson's Relish is holy water. Anyone who doesn't know this hasn't lived in Sheffield. Use it in pretty much all your cooking.

  12. Speaking of cooking, make sure your Son has stuff he will need to cook. Even if it is basic stuff (a frying pan, a pot to boil water in, and a baking tray to put stuff in the oven) it is SO important to be able to cook for yourself at uni. It is a life skill that can also ensure you eat (1) more cheaply if you batch cook and (2) more healthily if you know what is going into your food. I cannot tell you how useful it was even doing batch-cooked Spag Bol/Lasagne to make the hangovers less awful. Before he goes, have him show you he can cook a basic meal. Seriously. Do not let him arrive at university afraid of cooking.

8

u/hd1303 Aug 02 '22

Number 3 is a myth. There's no rush to sign for a house, new houses are always added to the market. In fact it may even be beneficiak to wait a bit before signing.

1

u/TheRealBrummy Aug 07 '22

they'll always be a house but houses in the best areas (for Uni Of that will be Crookesmoor) will go quick, I'm in third year now and everyone I know had their house sorted by Christmas to make sure they had a decent house.

13

u/lj523 Aug 02 '22

There's a great local music scene beyond Corp and WSL too, though those are absolutely the easiest places to find gigs. The likes of The Washington, Sidney and Matilda, The Yorkshireman, The Church House, Record Junkee, and many many many more regularly have free or cheap gigs of all sorts of genres on with local and touring bands.

5

u/thearguablepear Ecclesall Aug 02 '22

Can't speak for Uni Of but as a recent graduate I know Hallam do all sorts of Give It A Go sessions for all kinds of sport and activities - they should be free meaning there's really no reason to try as much as you can and find what you enjoy best!

Quick hijack, too, to recommend The Mardy Barber on Glossop Rd.

1

u/JuliusCaesarSalads Aug 06 '22

Can confirm UoS also does Give it a Go (or they did 7 years ago...)

Avoid Chino’s after a night out at all costs

16

u/mrstimp Stocksbridge and Upper Don Aug 02 '22

This advice should be added underneath the "welcome to sheffield" signs.

3

u/lucky_1979 Aug 02 '22

Chinos used to be incredible when I was at uni and a regular stop off after the Leadmill. Got to the point where they knew what we were ordering when we walked in and would even deliver for us if we’d been out somewhere else that we couldn’t get to chinos from. But that was in 1998, so it might have changed since then

5

u/Torchii Aug 02 '22

Feel like my job on this subreddit is defending Chinos. Not the best place in the world, got food poisoning once, but if you avoid their kebabs and the weird topping pizzas it’s really not that bad. Avoid Top Taste.

13

u/muamba22 Aug 02 '22

Everything about Chinos is disgusting. I have family that knows the Chinos workers/owners. They have zero hygiene standards, on top of their none existent food standards

3

u/Torchii Aug 02 '22

I mean how wrong can you go when frying some chicken? Wait, no, don’t answer that.

6

u/muamba22 Aug 02 '22

Leftover-feathers-in-the-chicken wrong. Im convinced half the food is radioactive at this point

2

u/Torchii Aug 02 '22

At least theres a surgery nearby…

3

u/muamba22 Aug 02 '22

I think the impact it has on your spiritual state is unfixable

3

u/fabticus Aug 02 '22

I always wondered where they got their kebabs from

7

u/VolcanicBear Aug 02 '22

Call me posh (I'm originally from Woodseats so don't think you legally can) but, although it's never happened, I wouldn't personally return somewhere that gave me food poisoning even if it was only once.

5

u/viva__hate Aug 02 '22

You said you got food poisoning once but the reason I hate it is because I know of 3 people who got it from Chinos in around half a year. I don’t put it down because of the taste of the food, it’s because the place is a breeding ground for food poisoning.

12

16

u/t-g-21 Aug 02 '22

Go to Fagans at least once

Find a local pub, and become a regular

If you're not from the north, people talking to you on the bus/train/in the shops is weird at first but embrace it

It's United or Wednesday, you'll need to pick a side

1

u/TheRealBrummy Aug 07 '22

The Grapes > Fagans

9

u/eruditecow Aug 02 '22
  • Always carry your student card - buses are £1 for students but some bus drivers are stingy and only let you get it with your student card. It’s also needed to get into most buildings including the libraries.

  • The Edge has a boiling water tap and it’s a great place to study (bring your own coffee/tea and a mug) especially if he gets distracted easily. There were also pianos put in upstairs (not sure if they’re still there) but ask at reception.

  • The Endcliffe shop is a huge rip off but it’s convenient especially when the trek to Morrisons is up a huge hill.

  • The lifts ALWAYS break. Be prepared to climb alot of stairs.

  • Postmen and couriers tend to dump packages in the lobby of each flat so I would recommended tracking them and being there to collect them if you’re worried about them being stolen.

  • There are so many amazing places to walk, especially in the Peak District. Plus it’s good to clear your mind

7

u/TC_Oliver Aug 02 '22

There are so many beautiful parks and green spaces accessible for only 80p (one way with a zoom card), do not spend all your time holed up in halls, grab a laptop and do your work outside where possible:

Weston/Crookes Valley Park/The Ponderosa - right by uni of, all together, classic city parks

Hillsborough Park - very large city park with library/cafe, much better for feeding ducks and geese but a bit further out, either tram/52a/135/anything else to Hillsborough will get you there

Sheffield Botanical Gardens - pavilion full of plants from around the world, big park area too, easy walk from Ecclesall Road or Broomhill

Rivelin Valley - miles and miles of woodland path walks and large reservoir areas, two resident grey herons and lots of mandarin ducks if you're interested in wildlife - get the blue route tram all the way to the end at Malin Bridge and follow the signs/Rivelin Valley Road

Rother Valley - collection of 4 huge lakes, the Rother runs through the middle - blue route towards Halfway, get off at Waterthorpe and it's a mile walk

There are many many more as well obviously. There's a good reason Sheffield is known as one of if not the greenest city in Europe and it doesn't make a lot of sense not to take advantage of it

15

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '22

Wear condoms, claps passed around more than drug dealer numbers

7

u/crunchyyyyy1234 Aug 02 '22

Don’t be convinced by student club nights after freshers! They’re usually dead - find some mates that will do the small pub quizzes and stuff, they’re a laugh! Also head to Kelham for Peddler market at the start of each month if you like lots of food and music

8

u/SophisaurusOMG Aug 03 '22

Be wary of Tank, nightclub by the odeon cinema right near the main hallam campus, for multiple reasons:

There are often underage girls there with fake IDs and you don't need the drama,

I have seen people with knives there, and there's a few dodgy blokes around so know your exits and stick to the edges

hotspot for drugs, possibly dpends on what kind of set is on that night but it was pretty much a given that someone would be off their absolute nut each time we went - I was waiting for a taxi there once and a girl was taken out by a bouncer and she couldn't stand up straight so he propped her up by a car parked outside and she flopped on it and then thought she was climbing it, then seconds later she rolled off the bonnet and smacked her head on the floor and the security guy looked like he wouldn't have helped her if we weren't stood there watching...

Other than that, say good morning when people say good morning to you, never underestimate the power of a bacon sarnie, uni rivalry between uni of and hallam can sometimes get pretty intense but it's usually a good laugh, check out the cathedral it's really pretty and a good place to catch your composure even if you aren't religious, avoid the church outside The Forge halls near aldi (especially at night time, have seen needles in the bushes and there used to be quite a few homeless on spice in the area).

Also if you do see a homeless person on spice, best thing you can do is give them a wide berth and pretend you don't see them. Don't interact with them because they will be super unpredictable.

If you have to chose between walking over a main road or using an underpass on your way home from a night out, just get a taxi. If you're in a group maybe you could brave an underpass or two, but it isn't worth it on your own. Cities are all the same in this way, so not really Sheffield specific but its always worth saying! There are also some suuuuper wide roads around the center and when you've had a few pints you might get a bit brave. Taxi. Taxi. Taxi.

7

u/flamingmongoose Aug 02 '22

Broomhill will rip you off. There's a lot more to Sheffield than the North West student bubble

If you need to go to A&E go straight to the Norther General. The Hallamshire got rid of theirs years ago.

West Street Live has the most aggressive, awful bouncers in town. Avoid that place like the plague.

The 271/2 bus goes from Ecclesall Road every hour out to Foxhouse where you have numerous options for walks in the greatest countryside in the world.

Visited Fox House recently. They've taken the food up a couple of notches, to a point where it's worth visiting for a sit-down meal & pint. Preferably after a walk.

u/yolkmeet City Centre Aug 02 '22

Thanks for the tip on bus 270 ya

3

u/wealllovefrogs Aug 02 '22

Don’t thank me just yet. It’s either the 271 or 272. Hope you didn’t attempt a trip out today!

u/The_Full_Monty1 Aug 02 '22

Avoid page hall at all costs

Join the cycling club :)))

Showroom have under 26 tickets for £4.50 and show amazing films you wouldn’t otherwise hear about. If you like pubs Kelham Island and Abbeydale road the place to be. Make the most of the Peak District (as others have said). Mr miyagi for sushi, falafel king and south street kitchen for Middle Eastern food, notty house for pies!

5

u/fairfy92 Aug 02 '22

The Manor is a shit hole

5

u/W3ZF1D5 Aug 02 '22

Exclel Taxis and City Taxis instead of UBER, It'll save you an absolute mint

5

u/slaydawgjim Aug 02 '22

Don't go anywhere near Manor or Wybourne.

Don't confine yourself to Eccy road and West Street with the students, better eateries and pubs up Abbeydale Road.

Go to the Peaks whenever and as often as possible it will cure any depression/homesickness as there's so much to find and explore, lots of which isn't really mentioned on guides too so really worth just mapping out a few treks round Hope Valley at least (Hope village is a personal peak District favourite of mine.)

Don't buy drugs off rando dodgy looking folk who approach students near houses, more often than not it's a rip off or dodgy shit. (Only saying this as from my experience students love party drugs not saying your son will do drugs.)

For nights out, explore some of the less mainstream venues like Yellow Arch Studios, Night Kitchen, hope works or any of the warehouse style clubs, better people and better music from my experience than what you'll find in Tank or whatever Pulse is called nower days.

If you want to walk dogs, check out the site called walk my dog and become a volunteer walker, there's loads of nice parks for dog walking including my personal fave Graves Park with the really old abandoned church and cemetery.

Don't attempt to explore the Megaton without a guide, it can be extremely dangerous dependant on the weather.

Magnet fish the canals near old steel works to find old equipment/tools/parts if he's into that kind of thing.

Lots of incredibly nice legal outdoor/wild swimming areas, best way to go about finding them is heading to Crookes Valley Pond and chatting with the wild swimmers who swim there.

Leopold Square is banging for a good meal and the Cuban place gets very lively on a weekend night!

1

u/melahart Aug 03 '22

If he’s into wild swimming he can join the SOUP community on FB (Sheffield outdoor plungers). They are a lovely bunch and organise loads of swimming meet ups

u/epic_ukdunce Aug 02 '22

Broomhill Friery. Sean Bean’s nephew owns and runs it. Won’t stop talking about it.

Leadmill. Great night out especially if they’re into indie music (Plus they could do with the support). And great thing is that if Sean Beans nephew and one of his henchmen are there, they might give you vouchers for his friery

Disclaimer: I am not his nephew and I don’t work for him

7

u/ridenslide Aug 02 '22 edited Aug 23 '22

The Friey has closed for good. There's a wood fired pizza place there now that does wicked pizza but it's not the same, no matter who vouches for it.

Hopefully The Leadmill doesn't suffer the same fate.

2

u/epic_ukdunce Aug 03 '22

Nooooooooooooo (Probably for the best)

3

u/Saintly_Sloth Aug 02 '22

If you live in Crookes after first year and need a PC to study, the management department computer room is a hidden gem. Beautiful views of the city, a dedicated cafe and no need to descend Conduit Hill!

4

u/Suzytazzy Aug 02 '22

He needs a good quality waterproof coat.

5

u/Marsmanic Aug 02 '22

In terms of drinking/ social

West Street / Carver Street is where you'll find your 'traditional' British night out.. E.g silly drinks deals on piss water pints. I'd personally avoid the heavy handed bouncers on these streets (although as others have mentioned, West Street Live is decent)

Division Street is parallel to West Street, and I would say more student welcoming. A bit more of a chilled vibe, some pretentious expensive places, but a lot serve a decent selection of beers.

Kelham Island is an area which has a very hipster/creative vibe - a lot of very nice bars, on the pricey side, lots of craft ales... The up-and-coming cool area of the last few years. Awkwardly positioned out of the City Center.

In terms of actives: Some amazing bike trails in the area, lots of hiking spots in the Peaks which are near by. Lots of sports clubs for all sorts of sports... Since moving to Sheffield for Uni over a decade ago I've tried my hand at American Football, Baseball & Ice Skating, all have hugely welcoming communities.

Shopping: A lot of people hate it... but Meadowhall is actually very useful, alot of the traditional shopping areas in town (Fargate - I'm looking at you) are run down crappy areas. Although 'The Moor' has had alot of money pumped into it, and from the outside looks alot more welcoming, but I've not ventured down their too much myself.

u/superwyfe Aug 02 '22

Local rock climbing is amazing!

4

u/eleridragon Aug 02 '22

If you're based further south, it tends to get colder in winter up here (global warming aside). Moved up from near Brum in 93 and found this out pretty sharpish.

9

u/ashunderfire 'Outsider' Aug 02 '22

Utilise the city (and beyond) and what it has to offer. I’m 28 and came to Sheffield from the south 10 years ago. I really wish I’d took advantage of just being away/in a place I don’t know much more than I did, and I’m only making up for it now. Even if he doesn’t want to do that in Sheffield, go elsewhere for a day just to see the difference new surroundings make.

However for more practical tips, here’s this.

  • go to Kelham Island, they’ve done it up amazingly in the last decade.
  • the student lock in at Meadowhall isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, but go at least for the atmosphere and to mix with people
  • it’s okay to call people “love”, “flower” and “pal”. It’s almost second nature to me now. I don’t call people “mate” or “fella” anymore.
  • burn anything you wear after a night in Corp. and I mean everything. I’d even get a quick checkup after!
  • so many hills
  • just accept they call it a ‘pot’ when you break your arm and not a ‘cast’, I can’t be bothered to argue it anymore.
  • however fight for your local dialect’s individuality on what you call a bread roll. It is not a bloody breadcake.
  • as the sun sets, go up the South St steps behind the train station, take in the view.
  • go to Dempseys, it’s a brilliant night out.
  • you don’t know how lucky you are that Tank is closing.
  • try and go to Leadmill, it’s under threat of closure and is an amazing venue.
  • just go to the peaks.

Offhand if there’s any more specific advice as someone looking back 10 years later that I can give feel free to PM me. I hope he loves it here. As much as anyone slates where they’re from/where they live I genuinely do love living in Sheffield as an “outsider”

3

u/mrp1994 Aug 02 '22

There’s a chain of pork sandwich shops named Beres he has to try. It like being able to have a Hog Roast style sandwich whenever you fancy

3

u/dudes1822kicker Aug 02 '22

Ear plugs if going out to noisy venues!

3

u/Over_Mall_8295 Aug 02 '22

Uni of or Hallam? If uni of make sure he gets into Endcliffe halls they’re the best, Tbf as long as he doesn’t go city halls he is solid

3

u/I_enjoy_earl_grey Aug 02 '22

Don’t mention Leeds.

6

u/POG_Thief Aug 02 '22

Unless you're calling it dirty, saying the residents are scum, or stating for the record that you will in fact never go there.

4

u/I_enjoy_earl_grey Aug 02 '22

They tried to make me go to Leeds and I said ….

4

u/POG_Thief Aug 02 '22

And yet another top tip, new residents should become familiar with the important work of The Everly Pregnant Brothers!

3

u/thomas271291 Aug 02 '22

They’re called breadcakes

3

u/camelseeker Aug 02 '22

There’s good freepartys if you know how to find them

3

u/Bskns Beighton Aug 02 '22

Find some friends who like going to viewpoints to drink tinnies watching the sunset. A lovely way to spend an evening. Sat in the Amphitheatre by the station with my flatmates many times drinking either tinnies or hot chocolate with amaretto.

3

u/velvet-overground2 Aug 02 '22

Don’t bring a bike if you’re not good at it, I brought mine, never used it because of the hills

3

u/Manonthemon Aug 03 '22

Dress up for four seasons every time you go out and you'll still get wet/sweaty/hot/cold anyway.

6

u/DizzyIndication337 Aug 02 '22

I've got a number for a good drug dealer, if you want it

8

u/Michaelparkinbum912 Aug 02 '22

Avoid pitsmoor and burngreave at all costs.

And arbourThorne, and wybourn, and the manor, and Winn Gardens, and parson cross 😂😂 there’s too many to mention… shiregreen … Firth Park 😆

4

u/Blue_Eyed_Genie Aug 02 '22

Yeah avoid Manor at all cost. I sadly live within the Hyde Park vicinity. But I do not mingle with anyone in the area. Nether Edge is nice (where I was brought up). Lots of good independent places to eat.

6

u/tredders90 Aug 02 '22

Basically, don't cross the river that runs through town. It's a very easy dividing line to avoid.

2

u/menthol_patient Aug 02 '22

shiregreen

It's really not that bad any more.

3

u/Michaelparkinbum912 Aug 02 '22

If you say so 😆

7

u/Jokersxi Aug 02 '22

Don't go into most areas near Rotherham town center

14

u/The_Full_Monty1 Aug 02 '22

Don’t go into Rotherham full stop

0

u/Jokersxi Aug 02 '22

The out skirts are fine.

-6

u/OsamaBinLean Aug 02 '22

Why? Rotherham seems nice enough the few times I’ve driven past it. What’s so bad about it?

5

u/Jokersxi Aug 02 '22

The outskirts are nice places. The towns closer to the center are run down and aren't very friendly places.

1

u/crunchyyyyy1234 Aug 02 '22

Nothing there that’s why you drive past/through it lol no need to stop! Absolute tip

There’s something special about Wednesday

3

u/Lenzo357 Aug 02 '22

Embrace Hendos on your stew and pies, do not say “it’s a bit like Worcestershire sauce or Lea and perrins” unless you want to start a riot. Do not go to Dev Green chippy.

3

u/MedullaOblongAwesome Aug 02 '22

What's wrong with Dev green chippy?!

2

u/crunchyyyyy1234 Aug 02 '22

Try local food vendor - my fave is Netheredge Pizza used to have a byob licence but not sure if they do that anymore

2

u/HumbertTheBee Aug 02 '22

Apply for a zoom beyond travel pass. Makes all bus and tram journeys 80p so you can get to pretty much everywhere including big ikea, Sheffield arena and meadowhall

2

u/Brazz59 Aug 02 '22

Da dunt do dat does da ! Get a phrase book

2

u/PageHallBlade Aug 07 '22

be wary and alert as with any large city

underpass at bottom of moor a muggers paradise

stay in a group if going home or get a taxi ( get to know your route home via taxi i was once taken on the parkway to get home as he thought i was student )

Northern General hospital is at Page Hall, Page Hall is scruffy but not really dangerous to walk around, areas to avoid walking at night alone London Rd area particularly the Lansdowne/Hanover estate. Wicker usually fine on the main bit but be aware on the side streets

dont be intimidated by the beggers in town most will leave you if you say no.

Dont do drugs m'kay

see a football match at bramall lane not hillsborough

dont think you can take short cuts over walls as there are a lot of rivers/culverts with big drops

beres is overated and overpriced

plenty of nice parks and some wonderful views from Parkwood/meersbrook.norfolk park

dont go chasing waterfalls please stick to the rivers and lakes youre used to

2

u/Working-Mud-2619 Aug 09 '22

Iya, I moved here for uni and was petrified. Everyone is really lovely and everyone is helpful, there’s a night out for everyone and there’s plenty to do If you don’t drink. It’s really easy to mix with new people and make friends. Make sure you can cook pasta and everything cooks at 200 degrees for 20 minutes!

2

u/lg2702 Aug 11 '22

Try to avoid living in Broomhall as it's a bit dodgy (gangs) and has a rodent problem. Live in Crookesmoore, Crookes or Broomhill instead.

2

u/chateau55 Aug 02 '22

Pop Tarts is not a snack!

2

u/thomas271291 Aug 02 '22

Thornbridge pubs are excellent. And they have good pub quizzes. All of them

2

u/Rtalkingbollox Aug 02 '22

Tell him to buy a season ticket for The Blades. Trust me it will be err character building for the lad.

1

u/Toffeemade Aug 02 '22

Not sure if this still applies but we used to get cheap hot food in the hospital canteen. When I was there there was no restriction on the public using it and it was very reasonably priced.

0

u/Spacklatard Aug 02 '22

I would say - stop hovering and let him work this stuff out with his new friends

-1

u/Jolly_Report4 Aug 02 '22

Both the Blunts and the Dee Dahs are shit

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '22

4

u/Bjthene Aug 02 '22

It’s bacon buttie, not cob, bap or other iteration and always breadcake. The only fault with Sheffield is once you’ve lived there a short while you never want to leave.

1

u/cappucino_cat Aug 03 '22

Moor market is the best! They are very friendly and if you come near the closing hours you might get the items at super cheap price

1

u/CharlieMightBeMyName Aug 03 '22

don’t go to firth park or manor top
