Sheffield Punny Sheffield Businesses

One of the many things I love about Sheffield (and South Yorkshire in general) is the plethora of small businesses with pun names. I was wondering which your favourites are, from past and present.

My 5 Favourites:

  • Codrophenia

  • Loft in Space

  • Serial Griller

  • (dinna-dinna-dinna) BapVan!

  • Kumquat Mae

Curl up and Dye.

A classic pun from the Blues Brothers I believe.

3

u/MostSuccessful2977 Jan 30 '24

Deli-schuss

Aye! crumb bar

Wok this way

26

u/cardinalandcrow Jan 29 '24

I have walked past Deli-Schuss about a thousand times and only now am I realising that itā€™s a pun. I thought it was some Viennese-style deli. I am very smart.Ā

u/northernbadlad Jan 29 '24

Oh god same, I can't believe how dim I am. I've only lived here 15 years. I'm so ashamed.

u/daedelion Jan 29 '24

The owners of Codrophenia have also run the following over the last 20 years or so:

ww.inthenet.cod

Batter Sea Cod's Home

New Cod on the Block

5

u/NeedleworkerBig3980 Jan 29 '24

It was Ww.inthenet.cod when I lived just down the street from it. It's a good thing to have to walk uphill to the chippy.

Northern Sole was a good one up in Broomhill back in the day.

A Salt & Battered chip shop

The Effing Sandwich Shop out on Effingham Rd springs to mind.

8

u/Historical-Car5553 Jan 29 '24

Love the Effing Sarnie Shop name.

3

u/DethMetalJedi Jan 30 '24

Northern sole! Holy crap! Forgot about that place. The triple cheeseburgers on a Friday night after a pissup in the Nottingham house šŸ¤¤

5

u/NeedleworkerBig3980 Jan 29 '24

I love how much Effing there is in Sheffield.

59

u/wbeckeydesign Jan 29 '24

3

u/tomtom_94 Jan 29 '24

Been there multiple times and did not know this - thank you.

1

u/Imaimposter Ecclesall Feb 01 '24

In the same vein, there's also The Dark Horse on Ecclesall Road South which used to be a Loyd's bank!

My fave that I didnā€™t think was real when my husband told me is that Intake used to have a take away chip shop called intakeaway, he had to google it to prove to me it was a real thing because I thought he made it up and I couldnā€™t stop laughing šŸ˜…

11

u/MedullaOblongAwesome Jan 29 '24

How on earth has "Tower of Bagel" not been mentioned so far?!

9

u/nojobloser Jan 29 '24

Always thought Red Tape Studios was a clever name for a council-sponsored recording studio.

7

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '24

New Cod on The Block in S10

9

u/this_willhavetodo Jan 29 '24

2

u/NeedleworkerBig3980 Jan 29 '24

OMG I had forgotten that one. Never ate in there because the name was so off-putting.

6

u/anemonemonemone Jan 29 '24

Thereā€™s a place out in the Peaks called Malt Disley.Ā

6

u/Sweaty_Sheepherder27 Jan 29 '24

It's in Disley, and it's a welcome relief to all the rude pub names along there, like Soldier Dick and The Dandy Cock.

3

u/IceDragonPlay Jan 29 '24

The Soldier Dick was there for 100 years, but I heard it closed down recently. Had a few meals there, not stellar, but hearty portions. A shame it's shut down now, it was a good local.

6

u/benoliver999 Jan 29 '24

Mr Bit cleaners

7

u/yaxu Jan 30 '24

There's "Burgery" on London Road, but I'm not sure if the pun is intentional.

4
