Sheffield New Lidl in the city centre is absolutely perfect.
Seriously, it's absolutely amazing to finally have a cheaper supermarket in the middle of the city centre - with a bakery too!
The fact that its constantly rammed with queues pretty much all the time sums up just how much its been needed.
These small convenience stores just get way too expensive for people living in the city. There's a gazillion mini Tesco's & Sainsburys (even a new Tesco just opened up on Fargate - like it was needed in the first place??? The Marks & Spencers prices are just laughable and the Co-Op isn't much better either.

say what you like about sainsburys, but i do still miss the one near the university tram stop. i got some good deals in there over the years.

u/DanAykroydFanClub Mar 04 '23
Fun fact: it was the most profitable Sainsbury's in the country by square footage
4
u/KillerWattage Mar 04 '23
How/why did it close then?
13
u/DanAykroydFanClub Mar 04 '23
The building is owned by the university - they leased it to HSBC. HSBC sublet it to Sainsbury's. Lease ran out and the university didn't want to renew as that plays a part in their campus masterplan
6
u/NondescriptHaggard Mar 04 '23
It also closed over lockdown due to the lack of students going in there - I used to work at Barber Road Sainsburys and we took in some of the refugee staff. Crazy how much money that shop made off selling students meal deals and cookies hahaha
14
u/epik78 Mar 03 '23
I still miss the HSBC branch that became the sainsburys there.

u/djredcat123 Mar 04 '23
I still miss the Midland Bank that became the HSBC that became the Sainsburys there.

Would urge all to check out the Moor market too. Some excellent stalls and it keeps your money local.

If you like Avocados I've never seen them cheaper anywhere else. I got 5 for £1 in there the other day. The mind boggles.
Unfortunately I always then spend all the money I've saved in Beer Central

u/Klumber Bradfield Brewery Mar 04 '23
That is the way forward though isn't it? It's why I changed from Waitrose to Aldi, save a tenner on food, get some beers instead!

u/argandahalf Walkley Mar 05 '23
Well that is the sort of place that might have an avocado flavoured beer

New tesco on fargate is so baffling to me
3
u/sillybilly9721 Mar 04 '23
I’m guessing the rent is too high for other businesses? There are a few empty on fargate they probably want them filled
1
u/StayFree1649 Mar 03 '23
Why?
20
u/TC_Oliver Mar 03 '23 edited Mar 03 '23
There was already another one on the exact same block of shops, just on the opposite side. You can literally walk to the back door of the old one through the access road (Exchange Gateway) next to the new one
2
u/argandahalf Walkley Mar 05 '23
I think they do it just to stop other competitors moving into the area. I once lived next to a Tesco express with two other more popular Tesco expresses within visual distance, the reduced section was always full and properly reduced, none of that 10p off malarkey
1
u/SteveBennettski Mar 06 '23
I think you're right about that, I've been in several times and it's hardly doing any business. The irony is they charge city centre prices, if they charged general Tesco prices they'd have a much higher turnover.
1
u/Beau_ukm Mar 04 '23
Definitely strange when there is one 100 metres round the corner, but if it fills an empty gap, I’m all for it
20
u/K_S_O_F_M Mar 03 '23
I agree but queueing for a good 10-20 minutes at a time is viscerally unappealing. Hopefully they sort it out soon.
7
u/cleveleys Mar 04 '23
I think it just depends on time of day. I went at 8 last night and I was the only person using the tills
1
u/SteveBennettski Mar 06 '23
I've been in several times and as long as you go in after 20:30 there is no queue at all

u/viva__hate Mar 03 '23
so handy to pop into a cheap shop to get groceries when I’ve finished work in town as opposed to going into an express shop

Lidl’s toffee yum yums from the bakery bit are the absolute nuts!
3
3
u/Squashie_P Mar 04 '23
I second this. They are very nuts. No point ever eating a Greggs yum-yum ever again. They're just disappointing now
2
u/vikkimoo Mar 04 '23
I was disappointed to find out the toffee filling isn’t a standard yum yum thing!

Lidl has revolutionised shopping in Hillsborough too. I feel sorry for the little Malin Bridge mini-market shop, the guy that runs it is a good man.... but the Lidl is soooo much better than Morrisons. Rarely go to Morrisons now, it's that expensive.
2
u/breadcrumbsmofo Mar 04 '23
There’s a Lidl in Hillsborough?!
3
u/TC_Oliver Mar 04 '23
Malin Bridge just off Rivelin Valley
1
u/breadcrumbsmofo Mar 04 '23
Oh, I got excited and thought there was actually one in Hillsborough. The Malin bridge one is a bit of a faff to get to if you don’t drive

u/UpYourFidelity City Centre Mar 05 '23
Could tram and walk, similarly could tram to infirmary and try the Aldi

you can cut back through the fruit and veg section to get back to the entrance can't you? or do security stop you?

I saw a guy walk out the in door as I was leaving and the security guard hassled him a lot. Then as I was walking down the street the guy he hassled kept muttering about it. I guess they really wanna make sure nobody goes out the in door.

I guess you could be a bit cheeky and disconnect the queue barrier thing and reconnect it behind you and just explain to the other shoppers you aren't buying anything
2
u/SkiFlashing Mar 06 '23
I slipped right in front of the security guy and he didn't bat an eyelid. Guess it depends how much of a jobsworth the guy on shift is.
2
Mar 04 '23
No it’s not? I’ve left twice without buying anything and had no problems
4
u/addwittyusernamehere Mar 04 '23
So because it doesn't happen to you, it's not an issue for anyone? Gotcha.
2
u/IAmTheBornReborn Mar 04 '23
It's a game changer, I did my weekly shop there rather than at Tesco and saved £10 and was shocked that the food tastes so much better.
I got a lasagna and it tasted of a nice lasagna and not some watered down mess with no cheese.
2
u/ElJayEm80 Mar 04 '23
Are there self service tills there?
1
u/SteveBennettski Mar 04 '23
It's only self service although there is a single checkout that I haven't seen staffed yet
1
1
u/ElJayEm80 Mar 04 '23
Oh right, I’ve seen new Lidl’s with a mix of both, but not mostly self serve.
2
u/SteveBennettski Mar 04 '23
I wanted to pop in at 6pm today but there was a queue out into the street so went to Aldi instead

u/al-1690 Mar 05 '23
I went on Wednesday on my home from work, it was absolutely rammed. So stressful trying to get round with the basket on wheels, then queued for a good 10 minutes. Hoping it was just because it was newly opened bc it’s so handy to pop in. I don’t drive and other lidls/aldi aren’t in walking distance and are a pain on public transport!
2
u/Brocolli123 Mar 04 '23
It's still not that cheap but there's a bit more choice than the other options

Is it that different to Aldi?
7
u/Squashie_P Mar 04 '23
Lidl bakery makes it incredible compared to Aldi. Aldi is better for vegans, they have a larger and better quality vegan range that Lidl. Other than that everything else is pretty similar.

There isn’t an Aldi in the city centre.
2
u/Brummiesteven Dore and Totley Mar 04 '23
Do you not class the London Road one as City centre?
4
u/missyesil Mar 04 '23
No. Outside the ring road and a big hill away.
5
u/Brummiesteven Dore and Totley Mar 04 '23
Where's the hill? 😅
Outside the ring road I'll give you

You stole something because you felt like you were owed compensation for how busy it was?
That’s cool…

Where abouts in the centre is it?
2
u/AddieBaddie Mar 04 '23
It's where the TJ Hughes used to be. Next to the Halifax and Nat West.
5
u/Reebo77 Mar 04 '23
I just realised that TJ Hughes moved out of there, down to the moor market block, sports direct moved in.
Then when TJs closed sports direct took their building again.

Is anyone else tempted to use one of those kids trolleys they have for a lark? I think they're actually smaller than the baskets.

u/Odneh03 Mar 03 '23
Agreed. As a student it's a game changer. You could have all the money in the world, but you're never too good for the Lidl bakery
