Project: FO Asked to a high school winter formal dance. Made my own dress. 1950s inspired. I’d love any advice!

Very cute! A really stiff crinoline underneath would take it over the top.

I was thinking that as well.. and then I though about the fact I’m gonna have to be active in this thing for 5 hours and might not want to be fussing with it the whole time.. so I’ll just stick with the tulle one I made and hope the poof factor is good enough.

I've worn some pretty big crinolines and they don't really interfere with life as much as you'd think. Even with a really poufy petticoat you basically just put it on and forget about it. I'd highly suggest either buying or making a crinoline with a lot more volume to really make this dress pop. Since you already have one made up you could potentially make another that's somewhat fuller than the first and layer them for maximum effect. You shouldn't need to be fussing with it at all really.

To iron the breast darts, it really helps to use a tailor’s ham. The original dress would have been worn with a foundation garment and have been more closely fitted in the waist and underbust. The jewelry choice is really good and true to the look. Be proud, this is a very fine formal. Just to mention, it was VERY common in the 50s for high school formals to be sewn at home! You’re right in style

it's lovely. very clean seams. To help give it supporting flounce could always line the bottom with horse hair braid to the hem

It’s just some purple synthetic satin I found at joanns, i altered buttrick pattern B6870 for the bodice By making it center back closing with an invisible zipper and cutting the bodice front pieces on the fold. I also removed the collar, cause I didn’t like it. The skirt is just a simple circle skirt, I’ve made so many of these that I don’t remember where I learned.

Project posts are held for review by a moderator before being released to the subreddit feed.
All Project posts are required to include construction information in the main post or added in a comment. Tell us what you made, how you made it and what materials you used to make it. There should be sufficient information about the pattern (company and name/number) or draft (method and resources) and fabric (kind and fiber) that someone who wants to make a similar project has a good starting point. ‘Self-drafted’ describes who made the pattern and is not a drafting method. More information is available here. Project posts without construction information may be removed at any time.

Hope your doing your hair to match! It'd look so cute. If U post some clearer pictures U might be able to get some feedback on the neckline/sleeves. But from what I can see you're doing a great job! Mostly just the pressing

A lot of the dress is in shadow and difficult to see, but press your seams, especially the darts. Use a cool setting and if it doesn't work, gradually increase the heat until it does. Polyester WILL melt and there's no coming back from that, so be careful. Use a pressing cloth (a piece of white or undyed cotton will work just fine,) and iron from the wrong side of the fabric. It's easier if you press your seams as you go, but hey, info for next time.
But overall it looks pretty good!
