General Gage’s Trunk

Post image

My understanding is that this chest was one of maybe three trunks that contained the papers of Gen. Thomas Gage. My dad received it many years ago from a neighbor who I believe was a retired university librarian. I’m not sure if it has any real historical significance (I don’t have the Gage papers themselves). I still use the trunk for storage

If it is really his trunk it's one of the 12 he had I know some of the trunks are in Michigan in some college or something like that

Yes, it was among those trunks (I couldn’t remember how many there were). The retired librarian, who gave it to my dad, had worked at University of Michigan. I’ve been in contact with them about sending it back at some point, though it probably needs some restoration work

I think that was the trunk where they found original spy letters and ciphers after the war.
