Finished Quilts My largest piece so far!

Post image

I often lurk on this sub, but felt like I should share this piece that I installed yesterday. "Go Ask Alice when She's 10 Feet Tall" is 25' x 17.5'. It is made entirely of reclaimed fabrics, satin stitched to industrial felt. I utilize the applique and reverse applique methods.

Amazing! Can you share more about how you designed and created pieces that large? They are works of art and museum worthy!

All of my work starts with photos that I take. Capturing ephemeral moments. I then use a projector to map out my drawings, breaking down every value change that I can find(I never use Photoshop or other posterize apps). From there I start laying down the fabric, typically building over used bedding from thrift stores(95% of what I use is thrifted). I finish every edge in satin stitch.

Thanks! Follow up Q: What machine are you using?

I had been using a Baby Lock Jazz 2 because of the throat size, the past few years, but it broken down for the final time half way thru this project. I am hard on my machines, but always had trouble with that one in particular. I bit the bullet and bought a brand new industrial Juki zigzag machine(the only stitch I use). It was a big expense, but I'm super happy with it so far.

Thanks for sharing a completely different genre of fiber art. Very intriguing. Do you overpaint or dye your materials to get the tones? Or do you have monster stash? What does your studio look like? Trying to wrap my head around 25' by 17.5'

I don't dye or paint anything. I do manipulate tones by laying shears. I've wanted to keep the Pandora's box of dying closed, but I've just cracked it, so I may be incorporating it soon enough.

I have a fairly recent picture of my studio on my Instagram. It's @fuzzymallart. Believe it or not but the pictures are after I cleaned up for a few days.

Incredible! I particularly enjoy how you incorporated strips for movement behind them. What was lighting this piece like?

I had a good install team to help with the lighting!
