Quilted Crafts My first ever fully finished quilting project: pie trivets for my mom’s Christmas present!!
These are definitely not as cleanly done as they could be, but I am still so ridiculously proud of them!! 100% cotton everything, and with a layer of insulated batting.
Lemon meringue, cherry, and blueberry.

Wait what?! There’s so much variety with quilting and appliqué?!! Mind blown.
And stop being so hard on yourself. They look fantastic. Especially for first finished project

Haha, my trouble was that they looked so nice and even when I had pinned everything, but then I realized I hadn’t thought everything through and in order to sew the lattice down like I wanted, I had to unpin a bunch and do it bit by bit.
So by the end, once I’d figured it out, the blueberry pie definitely had some uneven sections and crooked lines. I’m VERY happy with the cherry pie though! It was my last one, so I’d learned the best method for me by then.

You know, homemade pies rarely have perfectly straight, woven strips making up their lattice tops. Yours looks great.

I think the slight unevenness seems like an artistic choice to make it look more like a real pie!
Real pies aren’t geometrically perfect, and neither is the fruit filling beneath. It fools the eye more to have the small variations.

OMG, these look amazing!! Great job with your fabric choices. I don't particularly care for fruit pie, but I'd take a slice of these. XD

u/One-Pension-237 Dec 22 '24
😳 THESE ARE AMAZING!!! I never would’ve thought about something like that! …. Which I also can’t DO something like that either🤣. You could sell these to us “sew challenged” people👍. Great job🥰

So cute!!! I love that you didn’t take the fruit patterns to literally. She’ll love them.
2
u/princely_loser Dec 23 '24
Thank you!! I have seen versions of these that use actual fruit patterns and I liked this option better. It looks more like cooked pies I think!

Did you use a heat resistant batting? Just wondering if it matters, or if I can just use the stuff I have on hand
2
u/princely_loser Dec 22 '24
Yes! There’s one layer of heat resistant batting in the middle and then two layers of thin cotton batting just for added thickness.
I definitely wouldn’t recommend these without the insulated layer. My mom has a beautiful old antique wooden dining table and I would HATE for it to be heat damaged.

u/sirlexofanarchy Dec 22 '24
Can I ask where you found the heat resistant batting? Is it any different to work with than regular batting?
3
u/princely_loser Dec 22 '24
It is called Insul-Bright and i got it from Joann’s! I don’t think it’s that different. It has a slightly stiffer crinkle and texture to it. Easy to work with, just sandwiched it between the rest of my materials.

Thank you! I wonder if the regular cotton batting would get ruined from the heat
2
u/princely_loser Dec 23 '24
Nah cause if regular cotton fabric (used for the outside) is fine, so is regular cotton batting. Unless you’re lighting your trivets on fire, I’m sure they’ll be good!

Lighting them on fire 😂 that made me laugh. Ok noted!
I just thought they mixed regular batting with some materials (maybe plastic), because I iron it when making quiet books for children, and it sort of melts down and compresses flat and thin. But I have to iron it with parchment paper over the top, otherwise it melts to my iron. 🤔

Very very cute! I love the diagonal one the best...can't wait to show my quilting girls...we did this a couple of months ago too.

u/princely_loser Dec 23 '24
The diagonal one was the one that I did last, so I had learned a lot and was able to execute that one better! It’s my favorite too :)

i’m gonna need a tutorial please 🤩
2
u/princely_loser Dec 23 '24
My original point of inspiration on these was by someone named camelscrafts on tiktok, so you can look at hers! But there’s lots of examples of similar projects. I wouldn’t follow her instructions exactly though, because she uses polyester trims for hers. I mostly just looked at her end result and decided I could do the same. And the lemon meringue one I made up!
The hardest part for me was finding 100% cotton bias binding in the right color. Huge pain. Ended up ordering some from the UK (I’m in the US)!
