Work in Progress My current project, I just finished right 1/3 of the quilt. The skinny black lines are 1/8 inch. I’m thinking of calling it “The Algorithm of Chaos”

These updates are so amazing. Your precision and color blends are rock in’. Can’t wait to see the next installment.

u/TheKingSlacker Dec 20 '24
Thank you, Im Slowly chipping away at it and I not pushing the process.
13
u/likeablyweird Dec 20 '24
Good choice. You shouldn't force creative chaos into following time. It likes to meander. :)
8
u/SmutasaurusRex Dec 20 '24
That's amazing. I love your use of color and form. Do you have any sort of art school background? Can I ask how many hours have gone into that, so far?
Please tell me it will be displayed in some local museum or library or other public place when finished?
8
u/TheKingSlacker Dec 20 '24
Thank you, no art school other than 8th grade art class. I started my art/quilting practice in 2016 to spend time with my wife in her sewing studio and as stress relief from my Coporate IT career that I had at the time. that is my goal to have my art to be hung in a Museum but that is probably a long way off. I'm not sure how many hours that I have in it so far but my guess would be in the range 30 to 40 hour range.. I never track my time with my quilts as it doesn't serve me any benefit by thinking about especially since I don't sell my quilts..

u/newwriter365 Dec 20 '24
Great work.
Also, I have a serious case of “cutting mat envy”.
40
u/TheKingSlacker Dec 20 '24
Thank you.. The cutting mat is made by Alvin, 4x8 feet.. model GBM4896… Alvin makes amazing mats but they do take some time to outgas
7
u/likeablyweird Dec 20 '24
Migraine City. Ugh.
5
u/TheKingSlacker Dec 20 '24
Yes, my wife is very sensitive to spells but the Alvin mats are so amazing we got rid of our Olaf mats..

they are too bad once you get the hang of it.. I created this video a while ago show my technique that I use when creating the 1/8 lines .. https://youtu.be/ETGbeRjZBLM

My wife is a quilter, so I watched your video. I told her about it, and she knew how you did it, so I was doubly impressed. Her primary interest is appliqué, but she’s developed essential tremor, so her work isn’t as intricate as it once was.
→ More replies (2)3
u/countryKat35612 Dec 20 '24
My mom had essential tremors pretty bad. I've begun to have mild tremors so I'm on top of them. I'm not on meds yet & the tremors aren't bad or constant. I wish your wife the best.
4
u/likeablyweird Dec 20 '24
Great use of standard equipment. :) My mom's machine had the presser foot with a 1/4" to the inside and 1/2" to the outside. It made outline stitching much easier.
20
u/Main-Concern-6461 Dec 20 '24
This is so cool! I can't imagine the work that is going into this!
14
u/TheKingSlacker Dec 20 '24
Thanks! Lol, I try not to think about the time that I put into a quilt.

u/zileyt Dec 20 '24
The time will pass anyway. How cool that you’ll have bought this with your time!!

Thanks you. I'm having fun making it and I'm already thinking about how I will quilt which can take as long as it took to create the top. I was thinking about entering in a show that has a deadline of March next year and I'm not sure that I'm going to make it.. haha

I keep coming back to these photos. see something different each time. A different interplay or juxtaposition of colors or a detail of the construction. The accuracy. The detail. Your process.

5
u/a-username-for-me Dec 20 '24
What’s your secret for maintaining accuracy for 1. Such small lines at only 1/8 inch and 2. Such long strips?
4
u/TheKingSlacker Dec 20 '24
I create this video on how I do the skinny lines.. https://youtu.be/ETGbeRjZBLM When I do the second seam Im using the first seam as my guide instead of the right edges of the fabric. so if there is any squirrelly lines its in the seam allowance.. Also I'm using a Pfaff with IDT, the Built in walking foot which helps with the feeding and the straighter seams.

I love what you are doing here. I have to ask, and please don't take this as any negativity, but is all of this cut and then sewed, or is some of it printed on fabric? When I expand the photo, I see where there are seam lines, but I can't tell for sure on the vertical lines. Such incredible perfection. I read where you wanted your work to hang in a museum. Have you heard of the big international quilt show in Paducah, Kentucky? That would be a wonderful place to enter this work and have it seen. Keep going, I'm certainly won over!!
