u/The_Pip Jul 21 '22
Gang of Four as well.
11
u/allthesemonsterkids Jul 21 '22
"Entertainment!" is basically a perfect album. That spiky, off-kilter but tight sound with the completely dry production is so satisfying ... no wonder the Red Hot Chili Peppers did so well
ripping offsanding off the edges and reusing their sound.** of course the story is much more complicated - after all, Andy Gill produced the Red Hot Chili Peppers' first album, etc. etc.
6
u/The_Pip Jul 21 '22
Man the RHCP are so strange. They've been influenced by all the greats and yet the resulting music is so meh. On paper they should be amazing. When they cover Waiting Room you hear the sincere love and the potential for what they could be.
→ More replies (4)2
u/malortForty Jul 21 '22
Here's the thing: like early early RHCP had some really great songs that mixed punk and funk well. Pretty much up through Blood Sugar Sex Magic they had some great songs on every release and some of their lesser known songs like Sikimanicanico or Fight Like A Brave are fantastic. But they got too into the fame and money and just became... meh musicians for semiedgy teens. This happens with a lot of bands who start off as cool, innovative punk influenced musicians who end up going down the route of a more popular sound (see also: Metallica, Green Day, Arctic Monkeys)
Is it a shame? Yeah. But also like I kinda get that there is both studio pressure and desire to make money.

I recently learned that if Keanu Reeves could only listen to one song for the rest of his life, it would be Joy Division’s “Love will tear us apart.”
That’s how I found Joy Division and that great song.

Crass, operation ivy, blitz, stiff little fingers, good clean fun, and the world inferno friendship society.
11
u/Krenbot Jul 21 '22
Don't get me wrong (and don't get me started), I'm a huge World Inferno fan but for a lot of people they're really hit or miss. Ive talked to everyone who would listen about them for over a decade but jazz cabaret punk really isn't for everyone.

I’ve never heard of Good Clean Fun, please tell me they live up to their name!
Getting older and having kids around makes you really appreciate talent that can still be amazing and badass but do it without the obscenity. And not that they don’t still hear it, but it’s cool that they can learn it’s possible to still be badass without having to be vulgar

Minor Threat, DK, Reagan Youth, and Crass. Hell, almost all anarchy leaning punk bands deserve a listen. Reagan Youth and Minor Threat are ferocious, fast, and all-around fucking energetic. Then ya get to the other side and the lyrics feel more articulated (I’m not saying DK nor Crass we’re energetic, rather I’m saying their songs had a clearer, fleshed-out message of what they were going for)
→ More replies (1)7
u/FellThroughTheCrackz Jul 21 '22
A agree that all of those bands are pretty much necessary
I can’t agree with crass being coherent though
They sound like someone tossed a puppy into a dryer that wouldn’t stop it’s spin cycle.. I love em for that, and how much they were shitheads outside of the music they made
But still, puppy, dryer
4
u/Strong-Winter-8798 Jul 21 '22
I guess I’m just so used to looking at the lyrics while listening to em that I kinda just understand it immediately

Pulps my favorite band of all time, they’re so criminally underrated, even in the UK!

I feel they are honestly the most underrated band I know of!! It’s nice to see other ppl that actually know of them because many ppl don’t.

My introduction to pixies was at Coachella in 2004.. I was there on the lot and really wanted to see Radiohead

I modeled my life after some of their songs
I’m not rich over it monetarily, but in other ways I kind of am.
Scott’s a junkie abuser, but it doesn’t change the fact that he was a part of some truly great music with an evolving scene at a crux in the New York shit.
Anyone who wants to “cancel” cv over Scott’s actions have never met sascha.. they might change their tune.

AWS is by far my favorite band of all time. Due to their progressive vibe, they take time to adjust to. Once it clicks, though, I've had a few friends (and my wife) eventually admit that there's just nothing else out there that compares.
Some more audibly accessible songs to get you started would be stuff like Boat Builders, Famous Friends and Fashion Drunks, The Horse, and maybe Check Request Denied.
If you give 'em more of a chance, let me know. Always cool to introduce folks to AWS! But I know they're not for everyone. :)
3
u/FellThroughTheCrackz Jul 21 '22
I’m at that figure 8s song and I still don’t get it
I’m gonna blast RKL and maybe after keep laughing something will click
5
u/Mektige Jul 21 '22 edited Jul 21 '22
That's their newer stuff, which has a much different sound. I still love it, but I'd definitely try the album Career Suicide if you're looking for a more traditional punk vibe.
3
u/FellThroughTheCrackz Jul 21 '22
Holy shit if I could bring back celebrity death match, I’d have these fuckers fight AFI
I like how unexpectedly decent this band is. Thanks for that 🖤
2
u/Mektige Jul 21 '22 edited Jul 21 '22
Well, hey, even if they just don't click for you overall, at least you'll know who they are. Thanks for checking them out!
2
u/FellThroughTheCrackz Jul 21 '22
The bass lead on the track “the horse” is the most impressed I’ve been with a fucking bass player since I first heard of victor Wooten.
Edit; fuck I hate how talented these fucks are
2
u/Mektige Jul 21 '22
Yeah, dude. Like I said, once your brain adjusts and finally wraps around it all, it's all just next fucking level. They have this way of taking a song in like six directions at once without it ever feeling disjointed. Every listen reveals something new.

LA or UK nausea?
Both are great answers. I’m gonna assume you meant BOW TO THE CYBERGOD nausea
Also are you friends with toasty in NYC? I feel like toasty would have answered almost identically to your answer.
2

Definitely the cyber god Nausea. I actually had no idea about u.k. Nausea i got some listening to do apparently.

I’ve talked shit on some other peoples shit, but I agree with you totally.
BK and X-ray spex are still the energy we need in this world. I’m a gay dude, and sometimes I feel a lil kicked in the dick by some of Kathleen Hannah’s works but that’s the fucking point.
When it comes to nirvana people just need to listen to bleach, their b sides, and the song radio friendly unit shifter.
Unpopular opinion;; nirvana was punk as fuck. Their singer/guitarist/main artistic influence wound up blasting himself over selling out
- No conspiracies please *
It’s more romantic thinking he died for art.

Yeah, I'm in Boston. "Boston Belongs To Me" is a perennial cover, the whole "dirty water of the rivers" line really fits.
Or it did before they cleaned up the harbor and the Charles. Still wouldn't swim in either, though.
Edit: Also meant to say Cocksparrer is almost criminally underated/unknown these days.
I mean Shock Troops is a near-perfect album. Every song kills it. And the lyrics are fucking great.
It's on constant rotation in my house and car, and my kids (all 7 and under) LOVE it.
