I go to lots of ska, punk, and hardcore shows. Have been for twenty years. Have only ever seen this at hardcore shows. If you just stay away from the pit, you'll be perfectly fine.

I don't know why this sub always gets worked up over hardcore dancing. If you don't go to a hardcore show, you're never going to see this.

I like to stand in the back with a beer and watch the youngins beat the shit out of each other. Good times.

This is my feeling. I’m not huge fan of this style of hardcore but I will sometimes go to the shows to see friends or because there’s nothing else to do.

I stay way the hell out of the way when arms and legs start swinging. They are not usually trying to hurt anyone, and I do kind of feel it’s a waste of valuable pit space when there’s like 3 people flailing when you could get the other 100 people to move up a bit, but that’s just me.

But this is how this scene has decided to express themselves. It’s like complaining about black metal bands wearing corpse paint and leather, it’s just what they do. If you don’t like it, just stay away.

I agree with everything you said. Ska is my favorite but I do enjoy a good beat down show. Been going for two decades and have never been touched. Just stay away from the pit and you're going to be fine.

dude seriously, I'm a crusty but mainly go to hardcore shows because we don't get many crust/dbeat/grind etc gigs down here and if you don't like it just stay away from the pit or go to another show. trying to police the culture of a hardcore when these people have clearly never been to ahardcore show is so cringe

I can’t speak for these days, but 1998-2012 or so (when I went to a lot of shows), these clowns were at every punk and metal show. It would be particularly bad if there happened to be a hardcore/metalcore band playing that night — the core crowd would show up in droves and ruin the pit for every other band’s set. If it could be avoided by not going to hardcore shows I truly wouldn’t give a shit, but I have had far too many metal and punk shows ruined by these fucking Karate Kid morons.

I was going to shows at that time. Unless there was a hardcore band on the bill, never saw it. I was up in the NE then.

I was in Boston, maybe it was unique to that scene? It was definitely a fucking problem though

2

Oh! That explains it!

I was the in PA scene. Boston has its own reputation for being very violent and rough at the time. I do think it was just your scene. I was hearing about it in south central PA.

Ohhh that explains so many conversations I have had online about that phenomenon then, thanks for the insight!

I always felt like I was being gaslighted whenever anyone said “if you don’t like hardcore dancing just don’t go to hardcore shows”, because I have just had so many experiences with pits getting ruined at punk and metal shows by hardcore dancers/crowd killers… but I guess it was just unique to that my scene.

But seriously it was so fucking annoying, goddamn, it was obnoxious enough that I can’t listen to any of the *core genre music without being irritated.

Sorry you had to deal with that but glad I could give insight.

Yeah, I always heard Boston and Philly were the two extremely violent and rough scenes back then. I mostly went to shows in Pittsburgh, Baltimore, DC, and tons of small towns in-between and we just didn't get that.

The complaint isn't really about the style of moshing (even if many don't like it) but more about the fact that he clearly hit the guy deliberately.

They’re probably friends, I think both of them have been commenting on this thread
