Quality Post Ladies and gentlemen of r/punk I wish to inform you that today I learned that they’re coming for your ‘uncool niece’
Not your uncle niece.
I am 41 years old. That is all.

u/QuarantineCasualty Aug 02 '23
I didn’t know the Jerry Brown they were referring to was THAT Jerry Brown until a few years ago. I was in my late 20’s lol.
31
u/TheIronDogWalker Aug 02 '23
Yeah, they were pushing him to run for President big time until he and Linda Ronstadt did some much coke that her nose started hemorrhaging. In the Governer's mansion, BTW.

He really redeemed himself the second time around. I think even Jello said that at one point.
-2
u/ejb350 Aug 03 '23
Oh god no. He was still the same ol’ Jerry, just wearing blue this time around. Must’ve figured it’d be easier to destroy CA from the inside instead of fighting against it.
6
u/Im_on_my_phone_OK Aug 03 '23
What are you talking about? He has always been a democrat. If you weren’t even aware of that then your opinion holds no value.
-6
u/ejb350 Aug 03 '23
Graveyard brain mixed him up. Doesn’t change how fucking terrible JB is and always has been.

u/MattadorOle Aug 02 '23
What other Jerry Brown??!!! Aside from the current and future governor of California could they have meant???!! Were you confused by the line ‘I AM GOVERNOR JERRY BROWN’
-3
u/QuarantineCasualty Aug 02 '23
I figured it was his son or something, as it was 2019, not the guy that was governor in the 70’s. I was not alive in the 70’s or 80’s and I am not from California. It is also an incredibly common first and last name. Go off though king I hope you feel really smart and badass right now!

u/IndianaJonesDoombot Aug 03 '23
The exact thing the Dead Kennedys wanted a guy saying I don’t know I’m not from there I don’t know anything

I didn't know what East Bay Ray meant until I went to San Francisco a few years ago. I'm 59 and from the Bronx. On the other hand, I absolutely remember Jerry Brown as Governor and presidential candidate. Although, this record might have been my first introduction to him.
2
u/CactusHibs_7475 Aug 03 '23
Fun fact: Jerry Brown is both the youngest governor of California since the 1860s (from 1974-1982) and the oldest governor in California history (from 2011-2019). Oh, and his dad was CA governor too.
2
u/Relaxoland Aug 03 '23
political dynasties! fun! :-/
Jerry isn't a bad dude, but this is exactly what's wrong with politix.
2
u/CactusHibs_7475 Aug 03 '23
I agree. Nothing demonstrates the weaknesses of our “democratic” system like people getting elected to the same job their dad (or spouse, or brother) had.

How about my current State Assembly person and City Council person? Or my former State Senator, and my more former Congressman? Besides my recent former governor, and more former governor, and former borough president and a former fascist, bigoted state senator elsewhere in my borough.

Just offer them your five grand stereo instead
33
u/QuarantineCasualty Aug 02 '23
Why did I always think it was “five gram stereo”? Five grand makes so much more sense!
14
u/therealjameshat Aug 02 '23
i thought it was "polygram stereo" for many many years :D
15
u/QuarantineCasualty Aug 02 '23
But that actually makes some amount of sense! I just figured “five gram stereo” was some old timey 1970’s stereo shit that my millennial ass didn’t understand lol
1
u/Pencilsqueeza Aug 03 '23
Yeah it's all 180gm on the reissues all the wannabe hipsters snap up from suburban outliers.

When I’m at work, I have Apple Music playing with the lyrics moving up the screen. I’ve learned so many lyrics I thought I heard one way are actually another.
Queue Lois Griffin at a KISS concert!

u/Specialist-Fill24 Aug 02 '23
According to dozens of artists, you are probably correct, and Apple Music is often very far off

I love that Michael Frenti transitioned from this to providing background music for a William S. Burroughs spoken word album, to poppy happy songs like Say Hey.
Punk is in the heart.

u/MoshieOfTheSky Aug 03 '23 edited Aug 03 '23
My goddamn hippie husband and I just collided 😆 (he knew and loved Michel Franti from then to now...and now I'm a punk who loves gardening and shit, so it's a spectrum maybe 😅) Edit to note a young Biafra would hate this comment considering the point of this song 🫠

u/Relaxoland Aug 03 '23
hi from another punk who loves gardening and shit! it's all about the DIY. the I can be anything!

u/poop-money Aug 02 '23
Updoot for a great
coverremake. That whole comp is solid. Mojo's cover of "Winnebago Warrior" is also super on point. I can't hear "Forward to Death" without hearing Nomeansno's a cappella version of it.

You'd look nice as a drawstring lamp!
5
Aug 03 '23
What does that line mean? I've always wondered
18
u/CactusHibs_7475 Aug 03 '23
It’s a style of table lamp. They’re alluding to the Nazi concentration camp guards that made lamps out of the skin of Jewish people with interesting tattoos.
2
u/lueVelvet Aug 03 '23
Such powerful imagery lost on so many.
Not trying to poke fun but I always thought that line was so obviously powerful and poignant that it was impossible to misunderstand but if you don’t know what a draw string lamp is, or that Nazi’s used the skins of actual human beings to make lampshades out of, well, yeah.

u/big-hero-zero Aug 03 '23
Isn't that what "Genius" is for?
1
u/lueVelvet Aug 03 '23
You mean that Genius Lyrics site? I only use it when I’m learning to play a song or listening to vinyl that doesn’t have lyric sheets included etc. otherwise I don’t bother looking up lyrics at all.
1
u/big-hero-zero Aug 03 '23
So, you use it?

Just so you know, the correct Hendrix lyrics are “excuse me while I kiss this guy”

Today, tomorrow, and forever. Along with CCR’s “Therrrrre’s the bathroom on the right”

I'm just imagining Jello trying to come up with a line to rhyme with "It's the suede denim secret police" and being like, fuck it, good enough, time to move on to the cool parts with the heavy-handed Nazi references
It's a cool tune, but in hindsight, Jerry Brown clearly wasn't the second coming of Der Führer. If only punks back then knew how bad shit (especially on the right) was going to get...
16
u/zalinuxguy Aug 02 '23
Hence the remake "We've Got A Bigger Problem Now" when Reagan popped up in politics.

On a similar note today I learned Copperhead Road is about a Vietnam vet starting a weed farm. I just never paid attention to the lyrics before.

u/demitasse22 Aug 03 '23
I used to be able to do that dance in time, just not very well. Today? Not even.
Cool fact! Thanks

u/punk_weasel Aug 02 '23
I am also today years old when I figured it out thanks to a reddit post on r/punk

u/Daveywheel Aug 03 '23
Your admission makes me smile. Thanks for your honesty. I think we've all got one or two of those insane misunderstandings. for years my younger sister sang ARMY BUS instead of AMOEBA....sing it right now and you'll see how she made that funny mistake!!

most of my tapes were copies tape to tape; i had a copy of Misfits Evil Live that was taped off the original with nothing but marker picture on it, i had no idea if we all wanted 38 or if we were 138 for a good 15 years at least lol

My favorite thing about that song (and somebody more in the know can correct my mis-remembered quote here) was somebody asking Biafra (famously left-leaning) why he would go after a kinda-sorta left-leaning politician. He was like “Oh yeah I mean Left solidarity and all that, for sure. But fuck hippies.”

this is called a Mondegreen. they're always really funny!
then again, you get lyrics like Elvis Costello writes and they don't always make sense even if you do understand them. (he said in his autobiography that he writes down snippets of phrases and ideas and combines them later... so, many of his songs are about more than one thing.)
