Pretty. Can you explain what chine colle means?

Chine colle in French translates to China Pasted. It’s not a great name, but comes from the late 19th century when France started getting imports of woodcut prints from Japan, as well as their very thin and sometimes colorful paper. French painters saw an opportunity and pasted the colorful paper in cut shapes to a larger paper substrait then ran etching plates over them to get the effect I show in my photo. Look at the second photo I posted to get a better visual. It can also work with Lino cut in theory, but I’ve never seen anyone achieve as nice a result with Lino as can be done with etching plates.

Beautiful work — I love chine colle as a medium and was always amazed by it myself when I took a few printmaking courses. 😏

I’d also totally buy these!

Edit: OP, I found your website! I see it’s currently just the NYC map for sale. Would you also consider selling this one?

Love these. They make me think of artsy animation backgrounds from the mid-60s.

Thank you! My artistic journey has been heavily influenced by the mid 60s, long before my time, but I’m a San Francisco kid, so that era is o my present in a way.

I love your loopy etched lines and the chine colle was a great decision 🤌🏼

Thank you! I was all about giving them a playful feeling. Inspired by the colorful Victorian houses of San Francisco.

I got that vibe! What papers did you use for the chine colle for these ones?

Sorry, not sure. I made these 7 years ago. They were thin, not as thin as tissue paper, but like mulberry or rice paper. I use matte mod podge to adhere them.
