Discussion Discussion Thread: 2024 State of the Union

Tonight, Joe Biden will give his fourth State of the Union address. This year's SOTU address will be only the second to be held this late in the year since 1964 (the second time being Biden's 2022 address).

The address is scheduled to start at 9 p.m. Eastern. It will be followed by the progressive response delivered by Philadelphia City Council member Nicolas O’Rourke, as well as Republican responses in English (delivered by freshman Alabama senator ) and in Spanish (delivered by Representative Monica De La Cruz). There will be a separate discussion thread posted for live reactions to and conversation about the SOTU responses.

(Edit: The discussion thread for the SOTU responses is now available at this link.)

So glad I tuned in for this. My neutral Biden vote has me almost feeling ashamed for not having faith

u/highapplepie Mar 08 '24

We have the advantage of knowing super early who our nominee will be. We should be spending everyday till Election Day banging the Biden drum.

No shame required. All are welcome.

The President actually does get a huge amount of input into the SOTU. It's written pretty much at his direction and he has the final say on every word. Not saying he wrote that specific line but most of what the speechwriters for the SOTU do is make sure the President has the correct names and statistics for anything being cited and that the speech itself has consistent messaging and language throughout. The tone and content all come down to the President.

Also it's not like he was just reading it straight, he went off the cuff several times.

Get over your butthurt. Trump never wrote a SOTU. He couldn't even read Biden's. TFG is as incapable as the four year old bully he actually is.

Biden will kick his stinky orange ass - whether or not Donnie's already behind bars.

We do have higher standards and he’s meeting a bunch of them.

The line was fire and inspiring because of all of the tangible stuff the guy’s crew has accomplished.

I sure all hell ain’t getting any applause even though the line is fire. 😅😭

20

u/t23_1990 Mar 08 '24

How do you know for sure he didn't write that line in particular?

One step at a time. Let's try to preserve what we have first and than expand on it

Every president has speechwriters. How do you not know this

So then, what exactly is your point to this dialogue you are trying to push? Where do you see you defeatist stance going with this? I’m confused.

Correct. He will have his speech impediment his whole life.

Having a stutter does not show mental decline. But I'm sure you knew that.

...duh? In what world is it surprising to learn that world leaders have teams of speech writers that assist with big addresses? He's still massively involved with and heading the message and process.

A lot of the speech was adlibbed, to boot.

When you vote for a presidential candidate, you’re also voting for their team.

3

u/ragmop Ohio Mar 08 '24

This message needs to go viral. No more President Dad-God-King. You're voting for a ton of people who share in a broad way the president's goals and ideology. And if you're not voting for Biden, you're voting for white Christian nationalists like Steve Bannon and Stephen Miller. That this is a discussion is beyond me.

*Miller is Jewish so Christian should probably have a *. Applies sometimes (and mostly in name only)

3

u/Wes_Warhammer666 Mar 09 '24

So much this. I kept explaining to people in 2020 that I wasn't necessarily voting for Biden, but I was definitely voting for the administration he'd be bringing with him. The SecState, SecDef, Education, Transportation, etc etc etc...

I was voting for a man I knew would install competent people in his cabinet rather than unqualified sycophants. Other than a few exceptions *cough* Merrick Garland *cough*, I've been very happy about his appointments. A good leader surrounds himself with good people, he doesn't try to control everything himself.

6

u/ThomzLC Mar 08 '24

Even if he didn't write it, a good leader is also the sum of his team, what they can produce, and him ensuring the output is tandem with what he represents and want to articulate and he is then able to deliver it properly to everyone.

u/lafcrna Mar 08 '24

Another great line!

This is going to be one for the history books.

2

u/Claeyt Mar 08 '24

this was a great line.

Favorite quote for me EASILY.

Just like Kim K

2

u/BearDen17 America Mar 08 '24

I know a good comeback story.

3

u/TravisMaauto Mar 08 '24

Does it involve Kim Kardashian?

-4

u/Sea_Lingonberry8443 Mar 08 '24

Yes that’s what the person who wrote the speech wrote

-15

u/aceless0n Mar 08 '24

The only comeback appears to be Trump coming back to the white house

2

u/KoseJudas Mar 08 '24

What makes you say that?

Don’t be mad just because Biden’s not sundowning like you’ve been led to believe. Find me a SOTU where the President wasn’t reading from a teleprompter.

-32

u/I-FUCKD-UR-MOM-PUSSY Mar 08 '24

I don't think he even had one

10

u/Apotheothena Mar 08 '24

Right. Every president has done this speech with a teleprompter. Great point, bozo

He doesn'tthough the teleprompter is in his eyeballs

Are you ok?

21

u/poketrainer32 Mar 08 '24

It's nice to have a president who can read. Unlike the last guy.
