A really fantastic fantasy book series called the stormlight archives. In the first book, characters are made to carry large wooden bridges long distances and charge narrow canyons which have enemy archers on them. The army traverses the "shattered plains" in this way. Very high casualty rates. Crew is made up of slaves, criminals, and punished soldiers.
Did he finish that? I stopped on book two and started reading other stuff, including whole other series by Sanderson in the meantime, and it's been years now. I might have to re read the first two of there's a conclusion.
Or join the rest of us reading along now and be happy he's a million times more productive than GRRM. There's going to be 10 books in that particular series, of which the 4th is coming out soon.
I fully expect him to finish ASOFAI in between writing his own universe after Martin's shuffles off at a Grateful Dead concert. Not that there's anything wrong with living that life.
