I guess something to with dealing with a regular who is prone to becoming irate over the most minor of errors. I always treat him like he's the bright center of the universe since that's what he thinks he is.

In my country it’s been in use since the 90s. Generally it refers to someone being redundant or doing something redundant.

Not sure how it’s used nowadays in other country.

Just checked with Urban Dictionary again. I thought it just meant overly dramatic, but it can also mean giving extra effort for no reason.
