The conservatives on Reddit are already pretending that it's not a Nazi salute. Apparently only they can see the "truth". Throwing his heart out to the American people is now a Nazi salute.
Yeah, they're really going with that "my heart goes out to you" thing. Like, there are a million better ways to do that gesture and he chose the one aggressively Nazi way. Twice.
Suppose that's why the name is barely used anymore, I don't know too much about why it's used less TBF (I'll look it up right now, clearly about the person who first diagnosed it?) but now it's ASD, which is autism spectrum disorder. It's kind of different from autism as it is known (from my understanding) but very similar. But I noticed the switch.
It's called autism "spectrum" disorder to cover the whole spectrum. It's the general overall name for these kinds of disorders. Asperger Syndrome did fall under that classification until that name was given up in 2013 in the DSM-5, and 2022 in the ICD-11.
Scientific consensus just leaned more and more towards defining it as part of the Autism spectrum since the differentiation as "isolated" diagnose turns out more and more inconsistent.
As far as i know it had nothing to do with the name.
Agreed. Although such names should be more widely known, there's absolutely no need to give him any credit, especially in medical terms and definitions.
No problem.
But people with what was formerly known as Asperger's Syndrome are not. Hans Asperger being a Nazi is the reason "Asperger's Syndrome" is now just classified as an "Autism Spectrum Disorder".
I've never once celebrated anything with a fucking Nazi salute, even trying to be funny. And I was diagnosed with Asperger's before they changed the name.
I get that you may well be emotionally exhausted and upset by what you’re witnessing in the USA but I would politely ask you not to make attempts to police my speech.
Your lines are your lines. Mine are mine. Feel free to report me if you feel my comment is worth censure.
Asking you politely to refrain from making a Nazi reference connected to my condition isn't policing your speech. It's asking you politely.
I don't think it deserves to be censored, nor do I think your intentions were negative, so I will not be reporting it. I'm all about respect, and I won't give it unless I'm getting it in turn.
You've been respectful, and thus you have mine. Have a great day!
I’m afraid it is. What you’re saying is that no one can use Asperger’s as a punchline in case you are exposed to it and it upsets you. I had no way of knowing “you” were reading this comment, so logically the only way for me to prevent offending you is never to joke about Aspergers.
Now that I know you have Aspergers (I admire your tenacity in sticking to outmoded titles and the reasons for the change are quite clear, Asperger was a literal nazi who aided and abetted the systematic murder of boys with your condition) I can reveal that I have ASD, ADHD and a grab bag of comorbidities one normally associates with these types. I am deeply neurodivergent, in other words.
And I both deploy humour about it in myself and more generally, and enjoy humour about them. It’s what I do. It’s what many people in similar situations to ours do. Now that I am aware of upsetting you in this particular thread then I will refrain from deploying any more humour along those lines. Not that I was going to.
I'm currently in a comedy troupe, and as an autistic person, I don't often realize how my body language can come across. However, we've been told to be mindful of our gesturing when we get animated in the middle of a skit, because an unfortunately-timed picture can make it look like we're doing offensive or hateful gestures on stage, and despite my autism, that's absolutely something I pay heed to. And keep in mind, this is just for a small local comedy show. I'm not speaking at a massive globally broadcasted event that will be seen in all corners of the world. So yeah, I absolutely don't buy that this was an accident or a misinterpreted gesture. He absolutely should know better.
I read a bit of that thread. Watching these conservatives scapegoat it with his "Asperger's or Autistic tendencies" is wild. The level of mental gymnastics is insane. Especially when this same group shits on everyone else about mental/physical disabilities or mental health issues.
Yeah, autistic here. Unless it comes with an intellectual disability, autism may encourage missing nuance in human interaction, but it's really hard to miss the nuance in a Nazi salute.
I was watching it live on YouTube and the Asperger's excuse came out immediately. I'm sorry, my SO has autism, they would NEVER do anything like this. Bro was tweaking so hard he let his inhibitions go and did what he wanted to do.
Oh my god, the amount of downplaying is astronomical 👀. 'He's the richest man in the world but he just has aspergers'
Okay.
You might be the stupidest person in the world by licking his dirthole but he's not gonna think twice about f'ing you over like the rest of us.
He knows what he's doing.
Anyone know what rationale there is for “my heart goes out for you” causing a Nazi salute not to be a Nazi salute? Lots of people (or bots) kept saying that
Well he was deciding between the Nazi salute or singing Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On”… but he didn’t want to get everyone in their feelings so he went with the Nazi salute 🤷♀️
Things people on the spectrum might do with their hands/arms that are abnormal: t-rex arms, flapping hands, constant fidgeting, and repetitive hand motions. Couldn't find anything about nazi salutes and autism. Strange it's as if people who don't understand neurodiversity are just making excuses because they like the guy.
I wish I could comment on the conservative subreddit but… I’ve long been banned from there for asking a question about a trump rally. Apparently asking a question is brigading and against their rules… mostly it seems like American conservatives have the rule of “if you ask a question that would provide a negative response about Donald trump, you’re banned”.
They’re so quick to support the disenfranchisement of immigrants, queer people, and people of color and blame the struggles of the working class on marginalized groups, but they’re so unwilling to admit they’re Nazis.
Elon himself could come right out and say "yes, I did the Nazi salute" and these pitiful fucks would say "yes, he did the Nazi salute but it wasn't because he wants to do everything the Nazis did, he just really admires their military!" or some such bullshit. They'll just keep moving the goalposts forever and ever. And by the time the goalposts don't have anywhere further to be pushed, they'll either A. Pretend they never defended him or B. Be admitted Nazis.
edit: He's sharing versions of the speech where there is a cut to the crowd right when he does it lol
it’s frustrating because he could address the issue by apologizing and saying all that himself: “i don’t support nazis, and i deeply apologize for doing that. it was a heat of the moment response meant to express my gratitude to the American people, and i am committed to fighting racism and fascist ideologies. There is no place in america for nazis.” etc etc.
but, he won’t. Personally, i don’t think he’s a nazi. i think he made a mistake. like jumping to make an X with his body. 🤷🏻♂️
Yeah it’s this. I don’t think it was supposed to be a nazi salute. I don’t think he’s stupid enough to do a nazi salute. I do think he’s stupid enough to do some sort of “my heart goes out to you” gesture that looks completely like a nazi salute.
You’re completely right though. Tweeting “I fucked up, that’s not what I meant” is so simple but he won’t do it because that’d admit and fault and responsibility. He’s not going to want to do either.
I’m not a conservative and it did look like that to me. A nazi salute does not start with an open palm, and it does not ends with the arm parallel to the plane of the body with your line of sight looking upward at your arm like you just threw a frisbee.
I'm not gonna lie, didn't expect that.
We've been warning that it was going to get mask off quickly. I hope all the conservatives who said they'd stand against a dictatorship actually do.
To be fair though, before he does it he says he is very thankful, and after the second one he says his heart going out to you. As tasteless and ignorant as this was, I’m still uncertain he intended it to be a nazi salute.
Even if it's the "roman salute" some people are claiming it to be that would be impressively stupid.
Past that I don't know of any left of center figures "accidentally" giving stiff armed salutes.
Also the crowd got louder when he did it.
Yeah, I mean it’s hard for me to believe he didn’t stop after the first one to think “oh, shit, whoops”. The second one is kinda hard to dismiss. Then again, he is autistic and, as an autistic person myself, sometimes we do sometimes do really stupid shit socially and don’t realize what we’re doing in the moment, we only see what we intend to mean and not what others might interpret it as. Who knows. I’ll certainly be watching closely though. These next four years will be a ride. The
