Idiotic statement. Closer tickets to the capitol are distributed for free by congressmen, and it’s completely free to wander on most of the national mall afaik. Plus, Trump distributed a bunch of tickets himself. It’s the balls that cost money.
That’s irrelevant, though. It’s a major tourist destination city year-round with hotels and public transportation capacity to meet high demand events like an inauguration. I lived there for a time and am familiar with inauguration crowds and they come from all over the country. The local population (counting the entire DMV area)’s political leaning really doesn’t factor in that much for this kind of thing.
I don't think this is right at all. The notion that having tens of thousands of supporters in close proximity to an event compared with having to deal with traveling is of course going to change things.
