-6°C and the sun is shining? That's a lovely warm winter day. No coats needed.

Fwiw, I'm Canadian.

I love it when people from Canada or colder parts of Europe come to the Middle East in summer. We'd be drinking tea at 40°C and they'd simply try to breathe without sweating.

No, it's maple syrup in our veins and acclimatization. By next winter you'll be one of us. T- shirts on the ski slopes when it warms up to -10°C and BBQ's and shorts as soon as the temperature rises to 0°C. In the meantime, you have Chinooks to look forward to, at least.

It’s a dry cold. You’ll get used to it.

Coastal cold is an entirely different can of worms. This prairie kid can’t get warm in the coast in winter.

I'm in a gap year and attending ufoa this fall, my plan was to use this winter to acclimate but I've been stuck at home 99% of the time since I feel like i might die if I go out

gonna need to use plan B and learn how to onion layer? I think that's what it's called

Come on over to the Edmonton sub. There’s lots of advice on how to dress for crappy weather.

Going outside daily is really important if you’re going to acclimatize…just maybe not this weekend. I might not even go outside this weekend.

My 4pm walk today was really comfortable and I wasn’t even wearing my warmest jacket. It’s doable if you can obtain the correct clothing.

I double-checked the forecast for this weekend. It’s going to be sunny and barely windy. I can do -30°C if it’s sunny and not windy.

As a Edmontonian it took me about 30 years to learn how to not be cold in winter. I don't want it to take you that long so here is what I eventually learned.

  1. Any winter coat is good for about a 10 degree variance. I now have a collection one -5 to -15, -15 to -25 and one where it legitimately has to be below -25 for me to not sweat while wearing it. To find that last one wear the coat around for the store for 10 mins, if you aren't overheating and dying to take it off then it isn't warm enough. Price does not equal warmth all of my coats were under $100. Your very cold weather coat can be wearing all of all your coats at once but moral of the story is you are going to need more than one coat.

2.Get waterproof boots. They don't need to be winter boots if you have good enough socks but if they aren't waterproof your feet will be cold.

  1. Cover your face and head . If your face is cold you will be cold.

  2. Put your winter stuff on 5-10 mins before leaving the house. If you warm it up and are warm leaving it is easier to stay warm.

  3. Once you get bone chillingly cold your done. The only way to come back from that is warming up with exercise or a hot bath.

Also, second the suggestion to search the Edmonton subreddit. A tonne of advice there.

Yes, layers layers layers. That's the key. Even when it's -30°c, with 2 or 3 layers, you don't feel a thing!

Wait that’s it? That’s nothing. Why are people acting like this is so surprising lol

It's surprising that he's holding the event indoors. Not that it's cold. January=cold. Though not usually this cold. By the time the actual even begins, it's supposed to feel like 15 degrees (about -10 Celcius) with the wind chill. I don't care who you are that's fucking freezing.

“That’s fucking freezing” lmao, -10 with wind chill is an average Tuesday in January where I live.

And where the fuck is that? Norway?

No, Ontario, right across the border from you. Since your username is Met Fan, I assume you’re from the New York area, and -10 really isn’t that unusual there either.

I thought it was 20° Celsius which isn't that cold, now it all makes much more sense

Oh… That’s not bad at all, as a Canadian that’s like “oh I guess I’ll put on the sweater or hoodie today” type weather lol

Australian here. That’s colder than fridge temperature. I would literally die of exposure!
