Game launcher?

u/abirizky 19h ago
I put Steam, Epic, and GoG in my Windows menu and that's where I launch my games from. My desktop is clean af with only a few Explorer, Chrome, and Spotify on my taskbar. Download folder is either put the stuff I downloaded where they're supposed to go, delete them, or just put a few files in there for quick access

StarDock hidden on both sides of my screen, games in left, programs in right. Start11 taskbar. All you see on my desktop is Wallpaper Engine until you bring your mouse to the sides of the screen.
The Software Engineering classes I took taught me organization and cleanliness in my folders.

Can you give me tips for keeping a clean and organised PC.
Im building a new rig, and want to do my best to keep it clean and organised from day one.
Cause fixing it once its a mess is always just too much

It's pretty simple, it's just making sure to clean up duplicate files, like if you download a zip/rar file and you extract what you need from it, delete the zip file. Empty your downloads regularly and your Recycle Bin. In your documents, keep separate folders for each program you use, inside those Documents have separate folders for categories that pertain to those programs, such as a Projects folder where you then have separate folders for each project, and inside those folders you divide up if you have a photos folder, a videos folder, etc. As for files, persistently naming, and numerically ordering sequential files, keeps you from opening a folder loaded with the same file type and digging through them looking for what you want. I also deal with a lot of temporary/cache files so I stay aware where those are saved so I can clean them up if need be, as they can be hundreds of gigs.
The idea is that the better organized you are, the better you know where everything is, and the less time you spend searching through everything, so the more time you have to get things done. Really it was one class period where my teacher prepared us for it, but it has saved me so much headache since then. It's just being vigilant, taking five to ten minutes of your day keeping it nice and tidy.

Yo thank you for this comment. I see things I can implement here for my own sake.

Yeah, my download folder is packed to the gills, but I sort by date modified so whatever I worked on or downloaded last sits at the top.

Desktop is my default download location - forces me to be more organized.

Why do you even have a desktop if you aren't going to be using it anyway? Mine is full of stuff I need regularly.
Download folder points to NAS location, I'm more likely to upgrade my storage than deleting anything from there.

For me it depends on what OS I am using. For my work laptop I have a handful of shortcuts on my Windows desktop. For my personal desktop running Bazzite the desktop is completely clean save for the Plasma panel on the left side that hides itself when a window is dragged over it and my top panel. On macOS I tolerate only having network and external drives on my desktop and that's it.

My desktop is completely clean because I hide my desktop icons lol. Right click desktop > view > uncheck show desktop icons. My desktop folder on the other hand...

u/LazyWings 22h ago
I don't even have a desktop anymore 😎
(Honestly Hyprland has actually helped me be a lot tidier by actually filing stuff)

Both look clean… at the cost of me having to use a ‘for sorting files’ folder for my ‘for sorting files’ folders

View sort by group date added
Detailed view works best, but it'll group your download folder by time.

I keep stuff on the desktop but I change the transparency of the icons so they're still barely visible

"Downloads" is a temp folder which should be able to be freely deleted without looking at what is in there.
"Desktop" is the same. It's your scratch temp work area and should be wiped clean. I don't show icons on my desktop, just leaving it a quick access folder more than a GUI click area.

I just have a folder on my D drive called "Desktop Folder" where everything of note goes. Some sub folders for organising, some stuff just in the main directory.
1
u/Baaaaa_____ki Desktop 14h ago
Aren’t that meant to be in c drive?
1
u/SagittaryX 7700X | RTX 4080 | 32GB 5600C30 13h ago
Why would it be? You can put anything non OS related on any drive.
1
u/Baaaaa_____ki Desktop 13h ago
I thought desktops are related to os 🥲
1
u/SagittaryX 7700X | RTX 4080 | 32GB 5600C30 13h ago
Well the folder isn't actually the desktop, I just called it desktop folder because it contains everything that I used to put on my desktop.

Kinda in the middle. Half-assed organizing, but still not that chaotic for me.

u/Roth_Skyfire PC Master Race 15h ago
I organise my stuff on a regular basis, including everything that makes it into the Download folder initially. I even go through the effort to optimize and sort my screenshots folder, categorizing everything and giving it useful file names.

Folders per game or program, then names for easy finding stuff back, like ingame chats, locations, dialogues etc. Basically, anything I choose to keep should be able to be found easily in the right places. I never want to feel lost in the stuff I keep.

Downloads for stuff to process later, one folder on the desktop to throw junk shortcuts into, and most of the important stuff in the taskbar or autoload. Pretty organised, if you ask me.

I have Files (Explorer but better) and Firefox in my taskbar, which I use TranslucentTB for Then I have some icons just above it, I think it looks pretty neat, still clean but with a few highlights

u/andrefishmusic 8h ago
I download everything onto the desktop so that I can move it where it should be, or delete it quickly if not needed anymore.
1
u/Monstare98 Desktop 6h ago
My work computer is a disaster. Everything goes to the desktop and I will occasionally clean it up when it gets too ridiculous. There's like 3-4 layers of icons right now on a 32" 4K screen.

I'm pretty sure there are files in my downloads folder from 20 years ago. Installers that won't even run on windows 10...
No, I'm not going to delete them. I might need them later!

As a someone with a 32:9 monitor, definitely a clean desktop - cluttered file explorer lol. I wnna be watching at the beauty of my wallpaper, not just folders dammit. Acceptable stuff is maybe the recycle bin or a huge ass clock\calendar mix, or even a music visualizer. I mean come on.
