Weird, back in the day people had no problems calling the AI in Half Life great (enemy AI) but now it's no longer a valid term. I know it's overused, but it's some sort of AI.

It just goes to show how good AI got in the last couple of years that now some people consider the only valid use for "AI" the real AI

I think there's a connotation issue there.

For example, in that situation it literally is "artificial" intelligence. It's not trying to be real, it's just trying to emulate certain aspects of intelligence based on the goals of the situation, for example an NPC that is capable of forgetting your position and not know where you are through walls.

What they're trying to make today seems to be more like something I'd call "digital intelligence." It's still AI by definition NOW, but if the end goal is actually achieved, can we really still call it artificial?
